If I get it as an item, that's what I've been doing.  I notice that sometimes you get "applied" Humanity (the counter in the top left corner) as drops from enemies (?), but I have no idea what it does.  I usually just use it to turn Human because I figure I'm gonna eventually lose it otherwise.

Played this all day, from when I woke up until just now (with some breaks here and there). Game's pretty amazing. Only thing I don't really like is the open world, and I don't have anything against open worlds in particular, but I want fast travel. I don't like running back and forth all the time, and there aren't enough shortcuts to get you to where you need to be in a timely fashion. For example, I just backtracked to Firelink Shrine from the third boss (in order to buy the three boxes from the blacksmith and upgrade my weapons), and that took a good ten minutes of running and climbing and killing enemies. I'd rather just teleport to a hub, do everything I need to do in a few minutes, and head back into the next section immediately (ie. Demon's Souls). No time wasted that way.

But on the other hand, it's kinda fun stumbling into an area, seeing a massive boss off in the distance and running the fuck away before you get demolished.

Also, this game definitely has WAY more content than Demon's Souls. I have no clue how many areas there are, but I've already seen some immense variety and I'm sure there's still lots more to come. :bow FROM :bow2

I'm in Blighttown right now... the framerate must be in the single digits half of the time. Ridiculous.

Jebus christ. Sounds worse than Demon's Souls....  :-\ Open worlds indeed

It's just Blighttown that's been really bad so far. I'd guess that all of the light sources are what's causing it to choke, since the stage is pitch black with lots of torches all over the place.

I'm still really early in the game and regretting my choice as thief

regular enemies, at least one or two at a time, aren't a problem because backstabbing (though I don't know exactly how to do it, it sometimes happens) happens.  but against that random monster on the bridge, I was screwed without firebombs.  but then I used them all and he had an ounce of strength left, so I ran up to slash him, and while his lifebar was empty, he was still in the attack animation and killed me.  now I have no bombs and my souls are all over there.

not having a reliable ranged attack is annoying because the game is spamming firebomb enemies and archers.  my dagger is probably going to break soon and I have no idea where to fix it and I probably don't have to souls to anyway.

and the invisible walls are annoying.  there's one area right after a sword/kindle place that seems accessible but jumping towards it, an invisible wall pushes you away and you fall down dead.

There's a lot of really annoying things about this and Demon's Souls I forgot. Just wanting to go from point A to B is a chore because you have to slog through scrub enemies.  I always stop playing when I get far and die from a hard enemy because it's really boring just to get back to that point.

Isn't that kind of the point of the game though? That even 'scrubs' (can you call them that if they kill you?) can kill?

it's still annoying.  it's like, you found a better way of dealing with a boss/situation, but have to go through the same motions for a couple of minutes to reach that point.

it didn't bother me as much in Demon's Souls.  though, I wasn't a thief there.  enemies constantly hitting you with bombs and arrows with no renewable ranged weapon is a bother because you have to get up close.

so far I'm not digging the idea of an open world either.  I'm wondering if there is a way to jump between kindle spots later in the game.  Right now there are two really tough enemies (one of them insta-kills me.  I don't think I was supposed to be there yet, since I used my master key).  while I've unlocked a shortcut, I'm hoping it isn't a long journey back to fight these two when I get stronger.

No, in Demon's Souls you adjust and killing enemies is easy. So if you end up dying, sometimes you have to start from the beginning of the level to take down scrub enemies on the way back to the tougher enemies. That said, in Demon's Souls, you get multiple shortcuts in levels which makes traversing them easier.

Though I haven't played Dark Souls.

If the game sucks, I'ma have to come back and keeeel heeeeem.  :-*

And if the Asia version turns out to be in Japanese or Chinese despite assurances of the clerks, I'ma kill them instead. No joke. :maf

Slightly before. I almost never use parry though since it's risky. I just block, wait for the enemies to get staggered, and then counter attack. Or you can roll, either way.

About the mid-boss on the bridge
spoiler (click to show/hide)
you were supposed to climb the tower and then jump off and hit him with the downard slash. Kills him in 3 hits.
[close]

You do get shortcuts to the bosses, just like Demon's Souls. Sometimes they'll just place a bonfire a minute away from the boss, so running back to retry isn't too annoying. You also get shortcuts (elevators) that lead back to the main hub area (Firelink Shrine), but sometimes it can take a while to get back to them. Just make sure you remember where they are, because this game doesn't have a map.

As for the Master Key, you can actually use it as many times as you want, but it only opens "basic" doors. Meaning, you won't be able to unlock shortcuts or new areas or anything with it, just some random houses that might have some loot and a tough enemy. And any character can pick the Master Key as their free gift as well, so that review was wrong (again).

The blacksmith is a little further ahead, just before the first boss. He can repair your stuff (repairs are cheap too, only a couple hundred souls at most). But make sure you buy the repairbox from him, and his two other toolboxes if you can. They're 2000 souls each, but they let you do blacksmithy stuff at campfires instead of traveling back to him.

It's just Blighttown that's been really bad so far. I'd guess that all of the light sources are what's causing it to choke, since the stage is pitch black with lots of torches all over the place.

Yep, though I doubt it really does anything since the game world is entirely streamed. It only loads when you die, and the loading is quick. That's one nice improvement over Demon's.

Nope, you have to get past the dragon.
spoiler (click to show/hide)
There's some stairs in the middle of the bridge, on the right I think. That dragon seems kinda random to me, I couldn't figure out any pattern for him so I just sprinted toward the stairs and got lucky. You can activate his flame breath by stepping into his line of sight at close range, but sometimes even at long range he just does it randomly and takes away 98% of your health. shrug

Love this game. Man, theres a lot of X-tards bitching on gamefaqs about how they can't party up with their Gears bros and play crazy 4 player co-op. Way to miss the point!

As someone who has played a lot of games, this one is something beautiful and exquisite. You really feel like a lost soul of sorts while playing the game. The online intergration is genius.

I kind of wish I tried Demon's Souls earlier now!

The gargoyles have been by far the hardest boss for me so far. I did it with pure melee (one hit with RT at a time), so you don't really need ranged weapons. They're weak to lightning, so if you have the item that lets you enchant your weapon with lightning, you can do a good 140ish damage with each hit.

Also, try to cut the first one's tail off. He drops a weapon. (It seems like every boss drops a weapon if you can cut their tail off)

Sounds good; I'll keep plugging away at it, I guess.

Here's another question I can't seem to find an answer to in the wiki: I summoned that NPC you meet near the dragon on the bridge for the gargoyle fight, but I died before it was over.  Can I summon that guy again?  What if he dies during the battle -- is he permanently gone?

Yet, they don't respawn. Fuck me.

How hard is it? I've only seen videos of people cutting the tail of red dragon on the bridge using arrows with ease. Things will definitely be different in boss encounters though. I can already see myself dying intentionally in boss fights until I get that kind of loot (unless it's obtainable through other means, like weapon upgrades).

the place I stopped last night is

under the Dragon's bridge.  I pass under it, dash past the 3 cursed rats, and ended up fighting a metal bore.  I barely damaged him while slashing his arse, but luring him under a ledge, I took him out with two plunging attacks.  The some prick normal soldiers killed me  :maf

the parrying may be risky but seems very rewarding.  one on one I can pull it off against the first area enemies.  the timing feels unnatural but it works.

playing a super close range character like the thief is completely new to me.  I'm putting most points into dexterity (at 20 now) and endurance, and occasionally vitality.  I don't know if anything else is important yet.

^ Strength will be kinda useful for a dexterity build, since some weapons will have a minimum strength requirement. But I wouldn't worry about it too much right now. I'm focusing on strength/vitality/endurance, with some points in dex here and there. Got my attunement up to 10 as well so I can use magic if I ever need it.

I think you'll be able to summon him again (since he joins as a phantom), but I'm not 100% sure. You just need to be in human form in order to summon people for co-op, including NPCs.

Also, try to cut the first one's tail off. He drops a weapon. (It seems like every boss drops a weapon if you can cut their tail off)

Yet, they don't respawn. Fuck me.

It's not too hard to cut the tail off of the first gargoyle, and once you do it, you only need to loot it once and it's yours forever. There's another boss that has a choppable tail, and that ones really easy to do.

Also, I just lost 15,000+ souls (two levels worth for me right now). I got greedy and tried to do a suicide run in order to get some loot, but there was a trap in front of it that I had no hope of surviving.  :(

Not sure, I don't really use magic. But I do have Fireball and Soul Arrow right now: Fireball gets 8 shots and Soul Arrow gets 30 I think. Haven't used it yet.

Just went back to the  first area to get the Drake Sword... that thing is pretty overpowered for something you can get so early, but it definitely won't last too long. Seems like it's this game's Crescent Falchion.

edit: Anor Londo is even better, god damn.

The spear you find in Sen's is godlike too. Looks like I'll replace my Drake Sword with it for now, but just like the Drake Sword, it doesn't scale with your stats, so it'll be get replaced eventually. I like how there seemingly isn't one or two weapons that are clearly superior, I've come across a bunch of viable ones now.

That's interesting, and in a good way. It sounds like they don't share a pool, and if true the updated magic system sounds more fair now than it did before.

Being able to carry more than one spell, each with its own number of uses, sounds better than having a single shared MP gauge, regardless of how few casts you get for each spell.

I don't get why the dragon's fire on that bridge sometimes does no damage, sometimes half, and sometimes totally annihilates me.  I lost a bunch of souls because I usually start out by getting 300 from him charring the spear dudes up there.  This time he instakilled me.

Yeah, I like that about this game in comparison to demon's souls. When enemies aggro, they chase you until you've outrun them by like 200 feet, and then they slowly walk back to their regular position. In DS, you could get away from most enemies without too much trouble.

On a side note, while I have the popular powerful weapons like the Drake Sword and Lightning Spear, I find that my good old Zweihander +4 has saved my ass more than anything else. Two handing it and smashing an enemy with R2 either knocks them to the floor, or stuns them for a second, canceling any attack they were about to do. Even works on bosses. :bow regular weapons

I don't get why the dragon's fire on that bridge sometimes does no damage, sometimes half, and sometimes totally annihilates me.  I lost a bunch of souls because I usually start out by getting 300 from him charring the spear dudes up there.  This time he instakilled me.

I read somewhere that the damage is relative to how far you are to the edges of the bridge, and that "taking a hit, but continuing" is usually the guaranteed outcome, so "don't get disheartened."

I can't confirm, since I don't have the game, so they could be wrong.

I'm trying to avoid using it, as in, I can't use it or I totally would  :'(

only need 12 strength to two hand it, still kicks ass. The R2 makes a shockwave in front of you that makes mincemeat of black knights

Yeah, this seems to be how it works. Hold your shield up and run along the edge of the wall, sometimes you'll get through unscathed, other times you'll get hit once or twice.

Btw, the boss in Anor Londo is great. My favorite so far since I got my ass kicked several times.

seems iconoclast is way ahead of everyone else, awesome. He can give us the hint hook-ups.

Man, I wish I had more time to play this thing. Who would have thought making your own game was so much work  :P

Once Party Quest is done I get my game on

I finally got the game a couple of hours ago, but I won't be able to play until tomorrow. I had to rush my nephew to the emergency room, he had the worst asthma attack I've seen in years. I wanna say "FML," but not when he's next to me trying to catch a breath to survive.

Pyromancer seems like ez mode compared to wanderer, who i played for n hour before switching. So far my experience is that i do the same bit 15 times before moving ob. Being cocky really doesnt pay off here.

Jeez hang in there Jin.

Pyromancer does seem like a pretty good class to start with since he has a good mix of melee/magic right away. Seems like this game's Royal.

Anyway, just got a ring that
spoiler (click to show/hide)
changes my roll into a flip, which seems to move as fast the roll you get at <25% equip burden. I think the ring only works up to 50% equip burden, but either way it's awesome.

I accidentally betrayed the forest hunter covenant too, which seems like it'd be my favorite. Some enemies ran into the covenant area, and for some reason one of the NPCs turned hostile toward me, so I had to kill him. Then they told me to gtfo. God damn it.

So cuntface here gets stuck on whatever the fuck (I tried to knock him off) and I can't kill him, so I ignore him. Then I walk up some stairs, destroy these skeletons droppin' fire on me and then I get killed from behind because somehow, motherfucker got himself unstuck.
Usually what happens with AI like that is, when it's within a player's line of sight, or immediate viewing environment, it's relegated to resolving its actions against plausible attempts, i.e. it's constrained the same way the player's character would be.

When the creature is removed from those constraints, some games will just decommission the creature, make it cease to exist. Other games will just remove the movement constraints, and let it move toward its goal; usually its spawn point, or its last target.

I finally got the game a couple of hours ago, but I won't be able to play until tomorrow. I had to rush my nephew to the emergency room, he had the worst asthma attack I've seen in years. I wanna say "FML," but not when he's next to me trying to catch a breath to survive.

I know how you feel, Khan. Sometimes you wait and wait for something to finally arrives, everything finally lines up just right, it looks like you can go, then WHAMMO! No, sorry, sit back down and deal with this other thing.

Hope your nephew is feeling better soon.

I think I saved him too, and
spoiler (click to show/hide)
my Fire Keeper is dead, which is kinda annoying. My sewer merchant is dead as well, which is REALLY annoying, but I think I may have killed him at the start of the game on accident since I don't remember ever seeing him.

edit: wait a minute... the Fire Keeper and the guy in the sewer entrance is the same person? I don't think I ever saw him before, and now I used his soul to boost my flask. Fuck. Hopefully I can get another one somewhere.

I think you have to go through the door at the front of the bridge that the dragon breathes fire on after you ring the first bell. I got lost for a while trying to figure out where to go after that. Sometimes you need to check the descriptions of the keys that you get in order to see where they're used.

I didn't get a key, but I'll check it out.

I'm went on this elevator down and saw a ghost, shot some soul arrows on it, ineffective, ran the hell out of there.  Used my master key to go through another path.  Saw a sign that said "Beware of fatties", used binoculars to see two fatties in the distance, went another route, saw a fucking dragon, ran the hell out of there.  Went to the graveyard, kicked all of them off the cliff, went into catacombs, saw flying skulls glowing red, ran the hell out of there.

I feel like 9/10 options result in me getting fucked.  That 10th one is me trying hard not to get fucked.

:lol That is why I've come to like the open world in this game. Sometimes you'll just get fucked by wandering into an area you're not supposed to be in yet. The sense of exploration in this game is fantastic, especially since you're usually rewarded for it (or killed).

If I didn't play 10 hours already, I would do pyromancer or some ranged magic class.  My thief gets annihilated in direct confrontations.  I have to fight like Bronn and dance around or else I get killed in one hit.

This Capra Demon asshole wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the dogs attacking me.

I literally cannot move or see when I enter the white fog because of all the enemies and objects.
