So GoG shut down their site without warning, cutting everyone off from the games they bought WITHOUT ANY SORT OF WARNING. Just load up the page, and "OOPS SORRY WE'RE SHUT DOWN THANK YOU FOR YOUR MONEY"

People flipped the fuck out.

Today they're like "LOLZ IT WAS JUST OUR OUT OF BETA ANNOUCEMENT! RELAUNCH TOMORROW"

What kind of distinguished mentally-challenged fellows think that shutting down a site where you paid for games, without warning, as a joke would earn them more customers?

Oh yea, Baldur's Gate + Expansion tomorrow for $10 on their dumb ass site.

1. You buy a game on GoG

2. You download an installation file

3. You install the game whenever you want, on as many computers as you want. Forever.

exactly.  why the shit would anyone want to pay $10 for games that came out 10+ years ago and could easily be downloaded in minutes FOR FREE?  the "omg think of the developers!" argument doesn't work here because so many of those companies are no longeraround.  JUST STEAL IT FFS

It's really stupid, but I don't buy a ton from them and I'll still keep buying.

The only difference is I'm re-downloading everything I own this weekend and any future games I buy I will download right away and keep everything backed up on my HDD.  They have some good stuff and the fact it works on Win7 is a big plus.

I like GoG and I've bought tons of games from them.  I was a bit concerned when the original message went up, even a bit pissed since I don't keep my installers, but it's not like I would have needed them for this one week anyway.  I don't agree that it was a good marketing stunt, but whatever, I'll be back buying shit from them once they go back up.

bu bu how can I ever trust this company again. you're not supposed to trust a company you dumb american cunt. this is the reason you would buy a game from gog

actually gog torrents don't seem that frequent, or easy to come by. which is weird since their installers are vastly better than vanilla ISOs of the games they sell. if the site ever dies I'll throw all my gog installers up on a torrent site, I almost did when they started this little joke session. but decided to wait a few days, hehe.

not sure how anyone could be pissed by this? the original message always said the games people owned would be available for download again later in the week. the only reasonable reaction should have been disappointment over them not getting to rerelease any more games.

I didn't know if the site would be back up for good or just for a few days etc. to back shit up.  I have a lot of games and limited hard drive space, so having several gigs worth of installers would have been impractical for me.  There are also several games which won't run on my computer since it's old, but I bought the games on sale with the intention of playing them when I get a new computer.

I've never been tempted to go back and buy old games because there's just too much new crap in my backlog already, but IF I were a current customer of GoG, I'd be pissed, and if I was considering becoming a customer, this'd be the deciding move for me.

Yeah, it generated a lot of news, a lot of publicity, but it has fostered so much distrust and shown a real lack of judgment. Dangling customers' spent money in front of them and hinting that it may be lost is about as smart as Michael Jackson dangling that baby off the hotel balcony.

The new site is loading so slow.  Looks like the stunt probably did more good than harm.  I still think it was fucking distinguished mentally-challenged, but it probably did more to generate interest than just overhauling one day.

It's probably slow because everyone is fucking paranoid and wants to redownload ALL THEIR GAMES asap in case they suddenly disappear with no warning again.

That's what I'm doing this weekend!

Baldur's gate 1+exp is nice.  But do the original games have problems running on modern computers?  Because you can get the entire Baldurs gate set with I/II/2exps for like the same price online boxed.

So I've been downloading all my games as backup and I installed Gabriel Knight 1 and damn, not only does it run perfect in Win7, but it still looks and sounds fantastic.  The voice acting is better than anything this gen.  Makes me want to take a few days and replay it!

:lol - um, yeah, sadly almost dead-on. I've visited GoG several times, haven't found anything to override my reticence, but thought it was a good idea for a service. If Jinfash is right that the site even offered downloads WHILE looking like they might shut down, this is just bad judgment but nothing harmful. I'd been under the impression that the main page hosted that "KTHXBYE" message, AND offered no means of downloading. I should have checked the site before manifesting my nerd rage.  :-[

Sorry everyone for the delay in the launch of the new website. Our servers, even though we've augmented their number, just didn't manage to support the huge interest from your side - we're having 20 times the biggest traffic we have ever had in our history! We're adding more servers as we speak and everything should start improving. Enjoy the new website, all the features and the newly released Baldur's Gate.
