There is less diversity in big pub games.

The first video GR linked may be a shooter, but its twist moves it more towards a maze shooter, which changes rhythm and approach from your regular old twin stick shooter. There's a ton of point n click adventures and Tower Defense games as well. And then there's the big pub games as well. The diversity I once found on consoles, I now find on steam. It's a matter of production costs. There's a lot of me toos in indie DD, but there's more types of me toos, and an ability to mess with those formulas at a smaller financial risk, and so there are more avenues pursued and more freshness to enjoy.

I mean, I mean cry about modern consoles a lot, but I do so knowing that xbla/psn/steam/ds/psp are perfectly viable alternatives and I get most of my gaming from those sources.

I agree, and I've even sounded off on the lack of recent diversity in many console games, but like I said, I do so knowing there's always alternatives. Alternatives exist for a reason. Complaining about all pub games is silly and stupid, because you've thrown all games under a big fat bus. Sure, there's a lot of shooters, but that also means there's A LOT OF GOOD ONES.

I just don't get it. On consoles it's understandable, because both consoles share games more than ever these days, and most of the games are multiplatform, and whole genres are oversaturated for a multitude of reasons. But there's also a lot of great games in that pile, and even greater games on the handheld systems and dd services.

It just reeks of lack of foresight and an over eagerness to be contrarian and rebellious than truly embracing gaming. Especially when you start to pimp indie games, which are 99% of the time, total shit.

A lot of dd stuff can be published and still be from a small studio, or small developer otherwise independent of that publisher. There's varying degrees of "indie", and so a difference also exists between published games and big pub games. The term "indie" always gets sort of stretched around in any media.

But DD is more friendly to risk, which makes it more friendly to indie or small time developers working through a publisher, and DD itself is more established on PC than consoles.

So I don't think people are complaining about all published games. I think the issue is PC's old DOOM-KILLER disease has overtaken major console releases, and consoles are still working off a physical store model.

i'm not sure "if you have a problem with x, why bitch about it? Door's that way." is useful stance in discussions. I mean, it's all fun and games until people start using that door, then you end up with the american comic book industry.

I don't mind bitching within a hobby about the said quality of titles within that hobby at any time. I just said above I think the diversity especially in the big hd high budget title area could be greater. That being said if somebody is going to spend all their time whining about it on messageboards and claiming there is nothing to play in all of the hobby, then that person probably needs better things to do with their free time. Not to mention a lot of the whining isn't actually aimed at expanding the market. It's aimed at nostalgia for whatever that person was playing X years ago. Time moves on. People need to deal with it. There is nothing more comic book-ish than appealing to the exact same audience with the exact same themes and the exact same characters over and over again. Not aimed at anyone in particular in this thread.

Haven't played Minecraft, but when I think of indie I think of crappy games made one person who has no talent. Why would I want to play that? There's stuff like Cave Story, but for the most part, it seems it's riddled with filler.

I think I agree with parts of what everybody is saying. I think there is less innovation and diversity in games in general than there use to be. But I think the market is correcting itself a bit and I think that's a good thing. I think things like iphone apps, facebook games, indie scene, lower budget gaming, PSN/XBLA is and has been correcting a hole in the market that sort of grew as the budget sky-rocketed between PS 2 era and the HD era.

i don't know himu,you talk about portable... i mean sure there were a good chunk of nice games on ds and psp is getting that hot vanillaware game but the 3DS lineup is depressing and the reason i'm supposed to be excited for the NGP is because it can run uncharted

and let's not talk about all the pokeymanz,dragon quest ports,monster hunter ripoff and games that end up on portable "cause it's cheaper and everybody own a ds" like okamiden and dragon quest 9

anyway i offer this as "the last dumb thread i saw on gaf"

As Chinner said, it is all about tone and presentation. There is a difference between "Source is showing its age and I am disappointed that Valve isn't catering to high end machines" and that garbage Amir0x is pulling off. Any other person would have been banned within 10 posts if they had the same aggressive attitude as Amir0x.

Edit: And I think Portal 2 is one of the best looking games around. Valve's art style certainly hides any technical deficiencies of Source. I was really impressed by the lighting and environmental destruction.

I dunno how the overall user map scene is nowadays, because I don't play much vs. MP in games anymore, but back when COD/COD:UO came out there were some really beautiful maps being created (I know it's not Source, but still). I do know there are a few great custom L4D/L4D2 campaigns out there.

Professor Layton is Highlights for Kids: The Game and I'd feel embarrassed for owning that. Phoenix Wright has always sucked ass. Kid Icarus wasn't good either back in the day, although the new game could be better.

I agree that the 3DS has some potential but for none of the games you mentioned, Himuro. Ridge Racer 3DS, Samurai Warriors Chronicles, Starfox 64, and Legend of Zelda in one year is pretty good, even if all but one are half assed portjobs. I'm sure there's another good game or two I'm missing. I thought the PSP launch timeframe was far better but the 3DS lineup is much better than the virtual desert known as the DS.

someone in that thread mentioned there hasn't been a new chrono because no one wants to do it. this may be heresy but I'd really like Bioware to make a new Chrono and I think they could do it justice, because Bioware, especially in their recent Mass Effect 2, have really mastered a specific action-adventure type of rpg. To me, Chrono was always so much more about the adventure than the rpg. If Chrono were an action adventure like Zelda I'd still fucking love it due to the premise.

I remember trying one of those Phoenix Wright games, the first two cases were interesting, logical, and somewhat grounded in reality, then the case i got started normally and went into the wtf-logic zone. I turned it off right away after some ridiculous 'twist' in the storyline. I just dont have time for anime storyline-infected twists in games. Shit's just distinguished mentally-challenged.

Back when the DS was starved for any kind of games, let alone original content, any game that wasn't total shit was hyped up as the monthly game of the forever; Phoenix Wright was one of these games. I remember being young and stupid, buying these games because they were treated as AAA titles on GAF, and then getting burned time and time again when I found out they were mostly crap. Hell, I practically quit gaming for two years because I kept getting burned repeatedly by overhyped junk like Phoenix Wright.

The art style may look "animu" to the untrained eye, but I don't remember the games employing many embarrassing animu tropes. It's a legitimately good series in its respective genre, and how much you enjoy it depends on how open you are to said genre. The early drought may have given it more exposure, but it didn't alter people's opinion of it.

I think there's more to it than simply having no one wanting to do it, though that is likely part of it. Luckily your nightmarish vision cannot come to pass because it's pretty unlikely SE will tap a studio owned by another publisher to work on an IP where they have to pay people who have nothing to do with the new installment if they use it.

Edit: S-E's situation with the Chrono series is aggravating. They seem content to continue milking the first game with ports to the PS1, DS, and now the Wii, yet they won't work on any new games. At the same time, they jump at the chance to kill every single fan project that comes along.
