I am all about the early impulse and hard post bop stuff.  Also, latin jazz.  There was a few month period where I listened to Jimmy Smith's The Sermon every other day.

Bop is the shit.  I love the craziness of it.  It's more contained than free jazz but the rhythms are far more interesting to me than much else.  Art Blakey is basically God.

Unfortunately rap killed traditional music making (meaning instrument based) for a large generation of black youth. Which is sad. That's over simplistic because the reduction of music programs and lots of other things happened but a whole generation grew up wanting to be the next Tupac or Biggie instead of the next Stevie Wonder or Prince.

Exactly. Kanye's brilliance shines through his production. He's an okay rapper, and I feel that he's a better singer but his production will always override those two qualities. College Dropout was on another level.
