Windwaker is a good example.  People really shit hard on that til Twilight Princess came out.  I still can't believe it's now considered a great game.  Most boring half-finished piece of shit Zelda in the whole 3D ser-... sorry, second-most boring half-finished piece of shit Zelda in the whole 3D series.

Wind Waker you can make a solid case for, and it's really the only notable example I can think of. But when you consider that the game is the worst selling 3d Zelda, it puts everything into perspective; maybe these people are lying and never played WW to begin with and are actually enjoying a brand new game experience? Sounds right to me.

I've always loved Wind Waker though, even though it's half assed in many areas, but I didn't enjoy WW for the dungeons as the dungeons are pretty paltry stuff. I liked exploring the ocean in WW the most. I traveled every tile, fed every damn fish, explored every island just to see what was up. That shit was fun as fuck.

Most people who played WW seemed to enjoy it. Most of its hate was pre-release when people hadn't even seen any footage.

In general I like all Zelda games equally, except the DS games, and it stands as my favorite game series.  That said, Wind Waker is probably the weakest 3D Zelda for why I like Zelda games, but the presentation is top notch.  WW has the lowest highs, if that makes sense.  Like, the dungeons are the worst out of the 3D games and things like that.

The only time I've seen anything like a Zelda cycle in effect was with Wind Waker, which people initially scoffed at because of the art style. Those same people bought and enjoyed the game after it came out, of course.

Remind what part the tri-force hunt is. Because I don't really remember it and I've never replayed WW. Is that the part where you have to assemble random pieces of the triforce to get the master sword?

what WAS the triforce hunt? If it's what I brought up, I did that in all of 2 minutes, literally, because I filled up my entire map and just warped to the islands.

Yes, and for guys like you that mapped out every inch of the ocean ahead of time, it was Bob's Your Uncle, but for the rest of us who had just been going more or less from point A to point B, the game screeched to a grinding halt for HOURS while we were forced to comb around for shit.

even if you explored and completed the map, it's still about ~2 hours minimum.  you also can't warp to places directly.  there are a few warp points in certain grids around the map you have to sail from and to each time.

It's mostly because of sales numbers. It's more likely that a large contingent of the people suddenly came around on Wind Waker hadn't played it before, bought it used years later around the time of TP's release, than people who were previously down on WW suddenly changed their minds just cuz TP came out, which is the claim the so-called Zelda cycle makes.

You are in no position to make that claim. Is not like wind Waker sold 10 copies. Some three million people made a decision about that game while it was new.

It's more likely to me that current lovers of WW are viewing it with rose colored kawaii glasses and haven't tried to grind through it in the last half decade.

Mature western themed twilight princess created an animu defense force for WW.

Not really. Ocarina of Time sold 7 million, TP sold 5 million.

If Wind Waker sold 0.742, that's a horrible number.

Meaning, out of gaf - if we're using gaf as a metric and not zelda fans on the internet in general, as the zelda cycle is not inclusive to gaf if you're going to use it as a basis in reality - very few people probably actually bought Wind Waker to begin with. It makes a lot of sense, that most of Wind Waker's praises have come post-release, either from new users, or people who replayed it who are using hyperbole because Wind Waker has kawaii animu "whimsy", contrasted to TP's "dark and muddy" color palette.

So in a way, we're probably both right.

I would agree with this but I love Wind Wakers story and Aesthetic too much.  I still remember the first time I entered the fire dungeons with cell-shaded flame pillars rising up or floating around with a parachute while leaves blew and I was totally blown away.  The King and Ganon are the only two characters I've ever cared about in a Zelda game.  And the ending was horribly depressing and violent (I still don't know how they got away with impaling an old sad man with a sword in his head in a game with a cheerful kiddy aesthetic like WW).

In retrospect, the sailing was terribly boring, the tri-force hunt was filler padding boring, there were barely any dungeons and the game was ridiculously easy.

Still love it.  Will never replay it though.

Also, if the Zelda cycle were true, people would like Zelda 2. On the contrary, it's still regarded as a black sheep in the series.

I've been seeing a lot of Zelda 2 love lately actually. Especially in regards to "that's how the series should be like/it was Dark Souls for the NES."

Zelda series seems to alternate between good non-dungeon-stuff but crap-for-dungeons (either in count or in content) and the inverse. That's sort of why SS sounded like the perfect game, combining WW and TP's best aspects.

TBH SS is getting hate now but I don't think, so far, after four dungeons, that any other console entry is particularly head and shoulders above it. It does good  non-dungeon content (much better than TP), it has some good dungeons (much better than WW.) Short of a Triforce piece hunt at the end I don't get the hate.

I don't really believe in the Zelda Cycle as it does seem absurd to lump everyone in with eachother, but I'll be keeping a close eye on the general consensus of SS to see how things shake out in the next years.

The series lost its sense of exploration to me a long time ago. Its hard to feel excited about finding the same basic tools and objects over and over again in new scenarios. But I think this brings up the argument that Zelda really isn't for you and me but for those kids that are having their NES Zelda experiences, and OoT etc. I never got the same feeling I got from the 2D Zeldas from the 3D ones.

I also haven't bought a Nintendo console since the Gamecube and even then the only Nintendo game I bought was Wind Waker. Nothing since has compelled me to buy one, even the WiiU.

This is pretty much the way I feel about all Nintendo franchises. The first Zelda I played was Ocarina of Time ( I was gaming on the ST and Amiga instead of nes and snes) and I thought it was Brilliant. Then you keep on with the franchise and it feels too similar. Same with something like Mario Kart where I loved the original but I have no interest in the franchise any more. I think Nintendo works because they produce good software but also because they are always selling to the next generation of kids who are having their first experiencing with these franchises. If I had kids I'm sure I would like Nintendo a lot more but I don't and Nintendo isn't really for my tastes anymore. Not that there is anything wrong with what they are doing. I do like the Mario Franchise quite a bit as I think they mix that one up a bit more but not enough to actually buy Nintendo systems. The Wii was the end of the line for me and Nintendo.

Did anyone really complain that "Twilight Princess just wasn't as good as Wind Waker"?

Oh yeah, big time. And to be fair TP is far from perfect, so in order to support their argument WW>TP-ists exaggerated them and sort of ignored the problems with Wind Waker (usually instead focusing on WW's "charm" aka whimsy.)

I have no inclination to play a Zelda game these days. OOT was amazing at the time, but it's not like Mario where the core mechanics were already basically as good as it could get. The core mechanics in 1998 seemed awesome, but other developers have shown that there was a lot of room for advancement in the genre, and Zelda hasn't come close to keeping up.

What "genre?" Zelda is really in a class of its own. The games take elements from a bunch of different genres, and I think that's sort of the problem with the series. It's too many different things to too many different people. A lot of people like the open adventure aspect. Some people like the "adventure gamey" aspect of talking to people and doing seemingly inane things. Some people like the dungeons and puzzles. Others like the story. Some may even like Zelda's brand of action and combat.

It's telling the only two Zelda competitors have really been Okami and Darksiders. Everything else is way different from what Zelda has always been, which is why I always roll my eyes when people say "Zelda is X" or "Zelda should be more like X" or "the first Zelda was clearly the X of its time and the series has drifted too far from that."
