I'm really fucking tired of the Catholic Church's bug up their ass about birth control.
I know. Wouldn't it be so much better if we just banged children instead, I mean come on, who's ever heard of a 6 year old getting pregnant.

well, i'm talking about satoshi kon stuff, Osamu Tezuka like stuff. stuff trying hard to be legit is not exclusive to anime.

i think it insults the craft makers to say it can't be deep, or isn't deep. every art medium can be deep. anime can do this, because anime is an artistic medium and exists to express something. it's not like video games, where the sole purpose first and foremost, is to be fun and not to move someone to emotion.

The female archetypes in so many animes annoy the ever living piss out of me. Everything from their voices to grown women acting like 12 year olds to 12 year olds being sexualized. Shit's gross. I only bother to watch shit like Cowboy Bebop.

Devo, what about Miyazaki? Have you tried any of his films?

Or Serial Experiments Lain. That's a "deep" anime if I've ever seen one. And has a female character I'd hardly call sexualized or in a subservient role or what-have-you. I still have no idea wtf Lain is about after seeing the whole thing twice  :lol

I love crazy Japanese stuff that makes no sense though.

western cartoons and eastern cartoons are both great for different reasons, but i respect that eastern ethic more. outside of a few (Batman: TAS for example) most western cartoons exist purely to make people laugh. eastern cartoons? right now i'm watching an anime about a group of kids who make a jazz band. no action, little comedy, just characters. point me to one single western cartoon that is remotely like this. so when people talk about the japanese story telling, i think that's what they're talking about. the story telling isn't better, per se, but there are a more varied amount of stories.

outside of pixar, i can't think of one studio that makes cartoons approaching this.

For the most part, but also canadian and british. i am a whore for cartoons, you see. japanese cartons are great because of their variety, but they're mostly varied because of their main influence: japanese comics. Japanese comics, must hlike Japanese cartoons, are more varied than the western alternative. I read a manga about a dude in a handicapped basketball team and the trials he has to go through. once again, i would like to see a western equivalent. That's not to say one is better than the other, but i think the japanese take advantage of the mediums far better than any other region.

but of course, it is my dream to make a studio that makes animation like this to end the japanese monopoly. but it won't ever happen.

Redline [amazing animation extravaganza]
The Big O [the over-arching storyline can get really convoluted, but a lot of the single-episode stories are really, really great]
Kino's Journey [younger female character but nothing sexual at all, lots of philosophizing but nothing too deep or convoluted]
Haibane Renmei [younger female characters but nothing sexual from what I remember, great show]
Macross Plus [Top Gun: The Anime, if you're into that sort of thing, made by a lot of the same people that did Cowboy Bebop]
Cromartie High School [a really crazy, surreal show about a school for delinquents]
Everything by Satoshi Kon and Hayao Miyazaki [natch]
Patlabor [3 movies, a TV series, and two OVA series; a show about police officers who pilot giant robots, good mix of humor and action]
Planetes [hard scifi, lots of outer space with realistic physics and the like]
Aria [one of the better slice of life shows, mostly female cast but nothing sexualized here, good balance of science-fiction/fantasy, idealized Italy, and fluff]
Heat Guy J [action series set in a futuristic city, kinda like GitS but doesn't try to be deep or anything like that]
Darker Than Black [kinda like a Japanese take on American superheroes, but serious rather than over-the-top]
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust [post-apocalyptic vampires]
Detroit Metal City [a death metal band is lead by the Lord of Darkness, Krauser, who is really a wimpy kid who dreams of playing lighthearted pop songs]
Mushishi [a guy travels around helping people who are afflicted by mystical creatures]
Dai-Guard [office workers save the world by piloting a giant robot]
Time Stranger [I recommend this as much as I can, it's a really great movie]
Ghost Hunt [one of the better supernatural animes I've seen, can be really creepy, but is also lighthearted sometimes without falling into many of the traps that other anime do]
NieA Under 7 [same original creator as Serial Experiments Lain and Haibane Renmei, slice-of-life about a poor college student who lives with an even poorer alien]
Genshiken [it's a show about anime nerds, often hits very close to home :( ]
Witch Hunter Robin [a group hunts down witches in modern-ish Japan]
Reign: The Conqueror [one of the most homo-erotic anime ever made]

Whew.

Sylvain Chomet's (of The Triplets of Belleville fame) best film is his short The Old Lady and the Pigeons. both of his features are kinda shaky comparatively, although good fun.

Also:
Marcell Jankovics' Son of the White Mare, Yuri Norstein's Hedgehog in the Fog and Tale of Tales, Fedor Khitruk's Lion & Ox, Aleksandr Petrov's Old Man and the Sea, Jiri Barta's The Pied Piper, Jan Svankmajer's Dimensions of Dialogue

You're still missing my point. They're still comedies, albeit refreshing takes with their social commentary, but they still exist purely to make people laugh. Kids on the Slope is not a comedy. It is literally about a bunch of teenagers who like playing music and form a jazz band. That is all there is to it. It is like you are being obtuse to reject my overall point.

I mean, you keep bringing up characters, like that means something. The Simpsons, in its early seasons, was all about the town of Springfield and how they connect with each other. It was all about the characters. It had social commentary, pop culture commentary, but it was still a comedy first and foremost.

How hard is this for you to understand?

In what way is the film better? then again i haven't seen it since i was a teenager

It is the highlight of Oshii's career. Extremely well put together in terms of animation, art style, music, etc. Well paced and suffers from very few of the usual teenage cartoon pitfalls - the only issue I have with it is when there is the scene on the boat where they talk about diving in the sea and the meaning of life which has some trite dialog, though that could be because of the translation. Besides that the story is great, characters are good, action and tension, blahblah, etc.

The tv series is marred by it's silly political intrigue story to me.

I'd say Patlabor is Oshii's career highlight. I also prefer ANgel's Egg to GITS. Though GITS is the most popular, i think they're better.

xxxHolic is a superb supernatural anime, steeped in Japanese lore and very loveable characters
Black Lagoon is an amazing show with great action and superb, complex characters.
Goku Midnight Eye is a good cheesy sci fi 80's film (throw 888 cyber city in here too)
Oh Edo Rocket is a fun little LSD tripped strangely out of time series
Sword of the Stranger is what most popular cinema wishes it could be, great lore, pacing and action
Hajime no Ippo is a fantastic sports series that is both funny and intense
