Thing is that i think even kids are sick of your standard Mario and Pokemon.

I'm beginning to sense a pattern here. For future reference, don't assume trends with no factual way to support your perception. Mario and Pokemon are doing better than ever.

Quote
NES  Super Mario  40.23 million bundled
NES  Super Mario Bros. 2  10 million
NES  Super Mario Bros. 3  18 million
GB  Super Mario Land  14 million (or 18 million?)
SNES  Super Mario World  20 million
GB  Super Mario Land 2  2.7 million in Japan
GB  Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land  1.59 million in Japan
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island  4 million
 N64  Super Mario 64  11 million
NGC  Super Mario Sunshine  5.5 million
NDS  New Super Mario Bros.  15.89 million
Wii  Super Mario Galaxy  6.1 million

Mario is a dying franchise the big bump came form a easier 2d game.

Quote
GB  Pokémon Red, Blue, and Green  20.08 million approximately: 10.23 million in Japan, 9.85 million in US
GB  Pokémon Gold and Silver  14.51 million approximately: 7.6 million in US, 6.91 million in Japan
GBA  Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire  13 million
NDS  Pokémon Diamond and Pearl  14.77 million

Pokemon is slowly dying too.

EDIT:  I looked at the numbers again.  Pokemon isnt dying.

Man I fucking wish. The only thing better than Nintendo's ability to make a shitty game is their ability to sell said shitty game.

Indeed.

Pokemon is 15 years old.  Mario is 25.  What other series have been around this long and have the ability to sell over 10 million units in this day and age?

New Super Mario Bros ds/wii substantially improved upon their immediate predecessors.  Diamond/Pearl/Platinum reversed the decline the series was in. Your numbers don't support your assertion!

Come on.  You havent known kids going from the DS to the iphone?

I live in Japan, so no.  :lol

But of course, the iPhone/iPod Touch is going to take some of those gamers.  There's considerable overlap in the kinds of games kids play and what the iOS platform offers.  That's not what you were arguing.  You were talking the kind of people that float your FFs and Call of Duty games and what have you.

I'm just saying, the audience buying traditional games isn't any smaller than it was.  The sales numbers show that.  The industry isn't having problems because their previously Maddenholic, Mario-loving, Halo-shootin', Oedipal-sword-swinging gamers have migrated to cutting the rope.  It's having problems because the budgets for traditional games have outpaced the audience growth.

I'm not saying the iPhone isn't absorbing *some* of those gamers, but again, looking at cold, hard numbers, they aren't absorbing a significant amount.

You are right about pokemon it isnt dying.  Considering the trash that was Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, i am quite unhappy about this.

Look when you want to talk about dying Nintendo series, point to The legend of zelda and metroid. It riles fanboys particularly well but there's nothing they can do because its the truth.  Starfox and Fzero are already dead.

Not here either. In fact, I've never met or heard of anyone younger than 18 with an iPhone here, yet kids with DS's are a dime a dozen. Americans  :dizzy

I know most of EB would disagree but I feel like NGP PSP2 is the odd man out for most adult gamers, at least in this country.  Since I don't use public transportation and only have one hour lunch breaks on weekdays, there's just no good reason for me to play big budget games on a 5 inch screen when I have a 60 inch plasma, HD consoles and a gaming PC.  I could be wrong but I think that nowadays most adult gamers don't need or want more than casual mobile games.  Keep in mind that when the DS and PSP launched, mobile web-surfing wasn't even 10% as common as it is now.  With mobile internet activities taking up so much of the free time outside, it's hard to have any time left for handheld gaming sessions.

Zelda happens to be one of the most creative franchises in gaming, what might still have similar gameplay since OOT still adds new items and challenges to go through every time, not too mention exceptional design and gameplay with few flaws to speak of. Interesting worlds with interesting backstories and cliches yet good stories with excellent execution. And for those who say this Zelda is gimmicky, you have to remember that every zelda is gimmicky and you're lying if you say it never was. If you prefer one gimmick to another sure, but if you single out one of the series as gimmicky than you are just nitpicking and criticizing your own favorite Zelda.

Got your back BN.

What Iwata can't take is that Nintendo's sorry ass isn't any better off than any of the third-parties they've been sucking the life out of for years.

What?  Like, they've been making an active effort to weaken other makers of games?  That's a weird takeaway from the situation.

Nintendo absolutely doesn't want anybody other than Nintendo making top-selling games for their platform

And you think this...why exactly?

Not sure what you're trying to say with that image comparison, Patel.

"The Nintendo 3DS is a last-generation piece of crap with absolutely no reason to exist in 2011, and I greatly anticipate watching Nintendo dive head-up-their-own-ass-first into PlayStation 3-level irrelevancy with all the velocity and planning of an alcoholic barrel-jumper hurling themselves over Niagara Falls."

Truly, a picture /is/ worth a thousand words.

Most adults who play portables in the states usually play them at home, based on GAF and my own experiences.

No i like numbers, they are not quite up to date...or they are sold through numbers, unlikely

80% connected to PSN is also hmm...MS has said something about 50% connected(not gold, just connected)
I asuume that this is something like, connect one time...+1
Home?

70 million PSN accounts is not quite big, considering PSP and multiple accounts

almost all my gaming is done on a laptop or a portable because a) i don't have anyone watching over my shoulder and then having nightmares about rats attacking her; and b) pc and portable games are much better suited to my tastes than most shitty console games. tactics ogre alone is better than anything i've played on a console this generation

I vastly prefer playing on my plasma, since playing on a handheld for too long strains my eyes (and hurts my back, I could never get comfortable while playing those devices)... unfortunately most of what I like is handheld-exclusive this gen.

I'm gonna post this here since we've been name dropping Infinity Blade a few times:

Quote
Epic Games has been ‘hugely successful’ with the iOS title Infinity Blade. Epic vice president Mark Rein says that Infinity Blade has greatly surpassed Shadow Complex in terms of sales figures.

While Rein did not specifically state sales figures or number of downloads for Infinity Blade, the figures help give a perspective. Infinity Blade is offered at $5.99 while Shadow Complex goes for $15. If Infinity Blade has surpassed Shadow Complex, then at the very least the title has surpassed the 545K units displayed on Shadow Complex’s leaderboards.

Doesn't specify whether it's revenues or units but dayum, son.
