Quote
The subgenre can be characterized as wish fulfillment, with the person being transported often being a NEET, hikikomori, or gamer. In the new fantasy world, they are able to succeed through use of their comparatively unimportant-in-real-life genre knowledge, or gaming skills through the use of a game interface only they can access.[1][2] Their power can range from tremendous magical abilities surpassing anyone else, as in In Another World With My Smartphone,[1] to relatively weak, as in Re:Zero, where the protagonist does not gain any special power beyond the ability to survive death in a type of temporal loop.[3]

While the protagonist of an isekai work is usually a "chosen hero", the genre was also subverted by Drifters, where the people entering the fantasy world are historical generals and other warriors who are more brutal than the inhabitants of the world themselves,[4] and in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, where the protagonist starts as a bloblike monster with special abilities rather than a human.[5] Some stories involve people being reincarnated as unusual inanimate objects, like a magical onsen.[6]

...

It's nice not being aware of all this new bullshit anime terminology. I just think of isekai as the actual word's meaning.

The "person from the real world transported to a fantasy world" is an old trope [see: The Wizard of Oz], but usually people are talking about a very specific subgenre of that when they say "isekai" and it's one that takes place in an actual game world [Sword Art Online, Log Horizon, Dot Hack] or a fantasy world with a lot of game elements [Rising of the Shield Hero, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime]. Which is why Rahx was resistant to the idea of calling Escaflowne an isekai anime, it's missing a lot of the tropes that the recent crop of anime have in them.

The word gets thrown around a lot in the anime community because it happens to be very popular right now, thanks largely to SAO.

I like the slime one airing now.  :)

Forgot to mention there's another isekai manga featuring a main character who dies and is reincarnated in a fantasy world as...an onsen.

Boogiepop and Others is the show to watch this season. Since it's based on a book series that started in the late-90s [and had an anime adaptation in 2000, which I liked but didn't love [Serial Experiments Lain was much better]] it has the feel of that era and that era of anime in droves. Lots of washed-out colors, a dark and moody feel, a high-school setting devoid of the usual hijinks, and a casual association with sudden and brutal violence. The first episode really only establishes and explains the Boogiepop character, so not a lot happens, but it starts to move in the next episode and really gets good [though still maintains a deliberate pace].

Watched the first episode of Dororo, seems pretty dece. I’m not familiar with the source material, but the anime itself has kind of a retro vibe (i.e. no modern tropes). Dororo is definitely a girl tho, just saying. I’m not even sure if we’re supposed to believe that she isn’t.

A website opened on Wednesday to announce that a television anime adaptation of Yabako Sandrovich and MAAM's How much heavy dumbbells can you lift? (Dumbbell Nan-Kilo Moteru? or How Many Kilograms Can You Lift in Dumbbells?) manga has been green-lit for this summer.

The "body-building comedy" centers around Hibiki Sakura, a high school girl who loves eating, and Akemi Sōryūin, the beautiful and charismatic student council president who has a muscle fetish.

Dragonball Super: Broly-

This movie is really two stories in one- the beginning is an adaption of the Dragonball prequel manga story about the Saiyajins before their planet gets blown up.  Pretty much all dialogue and plot development here.  It retcons some things about their history and basically erases the Bardock OVA's story while bringing some of the story from the original Broly movie into canon.

Once things flash forward to the present, there's not really a whole lot going on here plot-wise.  Freeza finds Broly and brings him to earth and then Broly fights Vegeta and Goku...and that's it.  It turns into one giant, insanely-long fight.  There's some impressive animation in here, but Dragonball fights are usually kind of spastic and all over the place, so if you enjoy that, you'll like this- otherwise you're going to be bored out of your mind.  Just not a lot of plot to speak of past the prequel stuff in the beginning, unfortunately.

Spoiler-talk:

-I really like humorous slant on Dragonball-hunting- Bulma wants them to make herself look younger...and Freeza wants them so he can make himself look taller:lol

-What the hell was with the huge lack of characters?  So many characters didn't even get a cameo here.

-There's one point in the movie where Goku teleports himself and Vegeta out of the fight to go talk to Piccolo.  They leave Bulma behind.  WTF LMAO.  :lol

The new year has only just gotten started, but we've already got two strong contenders for MOST TOXIC ANIME OF 2018!!

First off, there's the hot new isekai series: Rising of the Shield Hero, about a mild-mannered otaku who is sucked into a fantasy world and must fight to save it from an encroaching evil. Unfortunately, he is promptly accused of rape by an evil seductress! Also, it turns out that she only did that to score points with one of the other heroes, a cool hottie. Now, that alone would be enough to nab the trophy in a normal year, but this is 2019, baybee! Since the entire kingdom hates his guts, he is forced to buy a slave girl to be in his party and fight for him. Except that it's okay, because it turns out that he's nice to her and protects her. The hero eventually gets called out for this, but the budding love between a 20-something otaku and his beast-girl slave eventually wins out. Everyone learns a lesson about how slavery actually isn't that bad and also sex-obsessed sloots are not to be trusted.

That brings us to next in a long line of magical girl sad-em-ups: Magical Girl Spec-Ops: Asuka. Several years ago, Asuka lead a group of magical girls in their quest to save the world from killer plush animals, but now she must come out of retirement to face a new thread: INTERNATIONAL TERRORISM! Things get started off right by having terrorist blindly fire into a group of civilians in order to cover for the escape of their captured leader. Fortunately, Asuka [still dealing with PTSD, but also up for kicking some butt] happens to be in the area and slaughters the whole lot of them, except for the leader who just gets his legs chopped off. He gets turned over to the police, who promptly get to work on him at a CIA blacksite. I could bore you with all the "blah blah blah power of friendship" and whatever that happens for a while, but anyway, eventually, one of the main non-magical girls gets kidnapped. Episode 4 spends about a third of its time on the various ways in which she is brutally tortured [it's also implied that they intend to cannibalize her later, just so you know how evil these guys are], forcing the good guys to torture some information out of the terrorist leader they capture in episode 1 [this is presented as a good and necessary thing, of course]. Also, it has magical Russian mercenaries. That doesn't really have anything to do with it being toxic, but I thought I'd bring it up.

Both series are currently streaming on Crunchyroll

That's Macross.

Please kill it with fire.

There's only two Macross': SDF and Plus. Maybe II if you're pushing it.

Is this one really causing meltdowns or was it just that comicbook.com article?  Watched the first episode yesterday- the claim of "OMG THIS SHOW PROMOTES RAPE!!!!!" is...no.  LOL, NO.  It clearly establishes that the woman is manipulating him and trying to fuck him over, to the point that it's almost expected when she says he tried to sexually assault her and we get a clear shot of her sticking her tongue out at him with a "gotcha!" message after he realizes she has played him and taken all his stuff.  No "ALL WIMMENZ R BAD" either...just "I got played and she's an asshole and maybe that other hero guy was in cahoots and is an asshole too."  OK.

The slave thing might be a problem, but I dunno since that's all at the very end.  Like...does he call the girl he buys a slave and treat her like shit?  Doesn't seem like it from the previews.

:idont

As for the show itself- seems interesting enough because of the main character basically being shit on, but not being a whiny bitch and instead manning the fuck up and doing whatever he can to get by.  Points for not having it start with the main character dying and popping up in another world.  Also like the idea that all four Japanese dudes who go to the other world are actually from alternate Japans/timelines.  BOOOOO to having a random Sword Art Online-style "PC interface" thing that they can see to check stats and shit.  What the fuck?  :lol  LOL at the main character having no offense, but realizing he feels no pain so he just has the little balloon monsters attached to him and can take them out and throw them at people.  Double-LOL at one of the other heroes apparently being voiced by SAO's Kirito VA.

He does treat her nice and "like a daughter," but she's still magically enslaved to him with a spell that electrocutes her if she doesn't follow his orders. The show does a lot of heavy lifting to make this seem like not actually a bad thing.

No Re, though, some parts of the show aren't too bad.
