There is one other solution,usb(or that Intel shit) compatible sticks.Download games anywhere--console,Win 8 PC,home,friend,work,Gamestop.Copy-paste already downloaded game, activate game using Live or go to Gamestop--they will happily sell you the licence key or activate game for you.

Just look at 360

360 supports USB stick(formatted by 360) game installs,installs are copy-paste of game discs(you can get disc read errors),but they will not work unless,

1.Disc is in the drive
2.Content is trusted--tied to one console(account)

Those two things are easily solvable with license keys.Piracy?Slim chance,unless you plan to be forever offline.MS can now easily ban 360s for some past offences.

Not having a disc drive alienates everyone who doesn't have a blazingly fast internet connection (which is still tens of millions of people who bought an Xbox 360) as well as people who have that connection but doesn't want to deal with downloading and installing a game for 30-120 minutes (let's say Halo 5 will be 15 GB).

I know it's a stupid rumor but Microsoft would be killing off a lot of potential customers if they went this route.

sony really just mismanaged the psp go.  the hardware and some additions, like the save state pause feature, are great.  problem is that games were as or more expensive than retail, not all games were on psn, including retail releases, and the price was crazy at $250.

vita handles digital distribution better for the most part.  memory card prices are jacked up, and it's made worse when games and saves are simultaneously deleted, meaning you can't just delete Uncharted to free up 4 gigs without deleting your save file.  but all games are on the service and have a small discount.  it's still not great if Steam, GoG, and iOS are examples of how to get people comfortable with digital distribution.  well, iOS isn't the best model.  I'm mostly talking about frequent sales to give older titles exposure and things like that.  currently Microsoft has sale on a few games maybe two or three times a year, and PSN isn't much better.

oh, and price drops.  Xseed does it with PSN games, with most of the Falcom games dropping to 15-20 after a few months.

my favorite case is Valkyria Chronicles 2

$39 for the game alone
$23 for the game with DLC if you look in the bundles area

the analog slider is a pile of shit but otherwise it's the best portable gaming system that's actually small enough to be portable.  other than officially supported PSP, PS1, NeoGeo games, there are so many emulators and other options for it.

I'd be fine with a DL-only console, if it was smaller, cheaper and quieter than the optical drive version or whatever. I don't give a shit anymore about having all my games available at once so space isn't an issue, so long as I know I can re-DL anytime (within reason too, I wouldn't make a fuss about maybe not being able to re-DL Biohazard 5 in 2030). I have no DL cap as yet and I don't enjoy games shopping at all. I hate game boxes on the whole (quick - name one that looks better than a Jack Kirby, Mignola or Moebius book! ...you can't) so would rather devote that precious shelf space to something else.

It makes sense for the manufacturers to include that as one option for customers like me, but it would be daft to have that as the only option.

Glad those make you happy but they don't do a lot for me.

Even on the remote chance that the art is of interest, who wants to look at it at CD or DVD cover size, plastered with stupid logos and text? There is literally not a game box out of hundreds I've owned that I would ever WANT to be seen, by myself or any other visitor to my home. That's not to say i'm ashamed of being a gamer or anything, it's just not something I'd ever miss if it went away.

For whatever the Call of Duty equivalent is of the next generation, nobody is going to be willing to sit down and spend hours watching it download or worse, waiting overnight.  People want their instant gratification, not to mention the idea of how well things will hold up if millions of people are downloading the same game at once.  So really, you expect people to sit around for 12-16 hours for the 18 GB Butthurt Brofare 4 file to download?

I'm not opposed to digital distribution but it's unrealistic for this next generation and whatever console manufacturer thinks it's a great idea is basically conceding the race.

I don't think you understand how pre-load works. The pre-load unlocks a few days before the game comes out. if you have pre-ordered, then it starts pre-loading. When the clock strikes midnight,  the game is automatically unlocked. For people who buy CoD, for the first day, this sounds better than heading to gamestop at night.

not to mention, 360 and wii can dl while being "off" anyways. It'd be cool if you have a game set for pre-order, and a few days before it's up for release, it pre-loads without any interference from the player, without even turning the console on.

Rumor doesn't say DD only .As for built in BD sku(drive not used for games)--not very likely,two reasons

1.Two main production lines
2.Failure rates, warranty,support

360 BC,movies--they can do that with some overpriced addon.

MS could hold a pretty big grudge against optical drives.Optical drive takes half of the 360 usable space and it indirectly played a big role in RROD fiasco--GPU cooler was too small,they even tried to fix that in one of the revisions(GPU heat pipe in front of CPU cooler).

Drive is also used as a primary pirate attack vector,still not fixed and there are like 10 different drive models.

Rumor: Obsidian’s Cancelled Project Was For The Next Xbox, Published By Microsoft

Obsidian's ill-fated 'North Carolina' game was slated for the next Xbox and published by Microsoft, according to sources familiar with the project who spoke to Kotaku today.

Yesterday, after almost seven months of development, Microsoft cancelled the project, our sources said. Obsidian consequently had to let go of 30 people, as reported by several outlets this morning.

One source close to the project informed Kotaku that Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart choked up while addressing the company during a meeting yesterday afternoon. While he normally projects loudly, the source said, he was chillingly quiet while informing staff that North Carolina had been cancelled.

Obsidian is a weird company to me. New Vegas is a pretty stellar game but I can't get into anything else they've done. It all seems pretty busted and filled with nice ideas but poor execution. Maybe I'd feel better about Alpha Protocol if I hadn't played Mass Effect 2 months previous. AP really should have hit before ME2 did.

Dungeon Siege III is pretty good, and very low on jank.

I prefer Bethesda out of Bioware and Obsidian. I think Obsidian makes boring games and Bioware has tainted their legacy by dumbing their games down to ridiculous degrees and poor writing. I really love a good Bethesda game. Their formula really clicks with me.

i like modern settings because of the above, doing things I can't do in real life but take place in familiar places. that's fantasy in itself and not reality. urban fantasy is one of the greatest genres.
