I don't think this has much to do with the taste.

The problem is that Resident Evil fanbase is on PS360 and those people don't give much shit about 3DS.

Be funny if RE6 did worse.

btw, looks like the gamers are already pretty happy with their ORCs, game's got a 42/100 rating on mk2.

The Amazon JP customer reviews should be great. Time to check 'em out.

Not sure why people are so shocked about ORC sales,it has guns and Resident Evil/Capcom in its title. What else do you want?

I like when things like this happen because they show two things

1.People will buy almost anything for their beloved franchises, regardless of quality.
2.You can't really make people buy things that don't interest them, regardless of quality.

How bad is that Dynasty Warriors game? I don't know how this could happen:

[PSV] Dynasty Warriors Next <ACT> (Koei Tecmo) {2011.12.17} (¥6.090) - 29.181 / NEW
[3DS] Dynasty Warriors Vs. <ACT> (Koei Tecmo) {2012.04.26} (¥6.090) - 15.578 / NEW

(Obviously Next has being a proven launch game going for it, but Vs. has the gigantic userbase on Vita)

I thought Vs. was actually going to do well. It had those Zelda, and Metroid (okay, that's a non-issue in Japan) crossovers, and looked like a Dynasty Warriors game. Then again, every 3D non-animu Dynasty Warriors game looks the same to me. Was this one more like Multiraid/ Strikeforce?

Good launch sales happen regardless of taste, peoples.  Its when the stank sets in that you'll notice a massive sales drop in the following weeks.
And yeah, Revelations goes to prove its not exactly what people want to play on a portable.

The problem is that Capcom advertised ORC as the next HD PS360 must have RE title and 90% of game buyers who don't lurk internet forums don't know that the game is an outsourced PoS.

This will hurt the brand for sure.  Or hey, maybe J6P gamers will like ORC?  It's not like they don't already buy and play other bad games.  Their bar for what makes a good game is a lot lower than the refined gaming tastes of EB.

One potential solution,moving  to Canada

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/169641/Ubisoft_investing_505M_to_build_up_Toronto_studio_.php
Quote
Ubisoft wants to replicate the success of its Montreal branch with its Toronto studio, and it plans to invest $500 million CAD ($505 million) and quadruple the office's headcount to 800+ employees to get there.

The Montreal branch, which the publisher is using as a model for the Toronto arm, is one of the largest game studios in the world with some 2,100 employees. It's also responsible for the Assassin's Creed and Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell series.

Founded in 2009, the Toronto studio is working on the next Splinter Cell game. Right now it has around 210 programmers and designers, but it intends to expand the team to more than 800 over the next ten years, according to a report from Canadian business newspaper Financial Post.

Similar to how Ubisoft brought in veterans from its Parisian headquarters to help set up the Montreal office 15 years ago, the company has moved a number of Montreal workers to Toronto -- including managing director Jade Raymond -- to make sure the studio is filled with veteran talent that can mentor younger employees.

"We are, in a way, applying the same recipe," said Ubisoft Montreal CEO Yannis Mallat. "We've been sending over experienced, senior people from Ubisoft Montreal as a guarantee that they immediately get traction and speed and knowledge in place so that they can recruit the best people. You can't hope to have a studio up and running in one year by just hiring junior people."

Ubisoft is receiving a lot of help from Ontario's government to build this studio in the province's capital, as the publisher was promised $263 million CAD ($266 million) over the course of ten years to set up the Toronto branch in 2009. The company's also able to take advantage of local tax credits to save on labor costs.

Many other big publishers and developers have branches in Toronto, including Zynga, Rockstar, Disney Interactive Studios, and Capcom. The city is also home to indie studios like Capybara Games and DrinkBox Studios.

edit: I know no one cares but I noticed recently that New Little King's Story on Vita outsold LKS on Wii's LTD in its first week (LKS number from Famitsu versus Media Create for NLKS)

[WII] Little King's Story (Marvelous Entertainment) - 6,426
[VITA] New Little King's Story (Konami) - 7,141

Evidently there's about 600 more people who wanted to play LKS with generic anime designs.

 :teehee

No, it's an old-ass meme, predating the internet, and it kind of has its roots in fact, if you think about it.  Think back to the NES era, or even the SNES era.  Now, consider *only* console games (because Japan was using completely different computers at the time, they didn't have access to most of the great Western PC games of those eras).  Western gaming doesn't look too good from that angle.

The problem is that the meme, like every fucking meme ever, is a product of its time/place and only its time/place.  It needs to be retired badly and it slowly is going out thanks to the high quality of Western games on consoles these days.  Stuff like ORC that is high profile, complete dogshit, and can directly be compared to Japanese installments, though... it doesn't help.

It also didn't help that during the good old days, most western games had horrendous translations or were simply not translated, maybe with a translation card in the manual if you were lucky.  Combine that with games which were usually inferior to Japanese-produced ones, and it's not hard to see how that meme became commonplace.

Western devs didn't care about Japan, although oddly enough the PC RPGs like Ultima and Wizardry were pretty popular.  Even those had iffy translations but at least some sort of effort was made.

Edit: Oh, it opened at "[3DS] Dynasty Warriors VS (Tecmo Koei, 04.26.2012): 15,578". I guess that's what dcharlie is referring to.

DW VS is such a pointless release that it deserves to bomb, especially after SWC which was an amazing game.  Hopefully it'll result in Koei putting more effort into their next release.

Not so much, it's a week that you have like 4 days off.

This is why launch lineups now and for the end of time mean crap. Give me two worthwhile games at launch and space the rest over the next six-eight months when there is always the post-launch desert and I'll be happy.

Of course it would be nice to have both, but I'd take well timed releases over best launch ever.

Of course I've sealed my fate since apparently Wii U's launch is going to be awesome but whatevs.

Golden Week is a week where three holidays are near each other, and it often works out to an entire week off (not this year, though).  The kids are home, families are taking road trips to visit other places, and shops run probably some of the best sales of the year (I saw 3G Vitas going for 18,500 yen at one shop, for example).  It's "Golden" because shops rack up some of the best sales of the year during the week.  Of course, games being toys, the Xmas/New Year's combo usually outdoes it, but GW is still probably the best sales period of the year outside of that.

But is there a fat man in red or a giant killer rabbit handing out the toys? That's what I wanna know.

Yeah, if they don't drop the price soon, as in before late Fall, then they can go ahead and wrap it up. With all the other crazy deals on systems and games  I would imagine will be happening this year around the holiday season, any price cut then won't give them much in the way of forward momentum. They need to start generating some interest now, before the Fall swarm.

It's just too fucking expensive for what it is, and even though I think it's the best piece of handheld gaming hardware ever made I have been saying that since the beginning. $199 + 4GB + DLC code for a game would be a smart thing to do. I can't believe they have lost every single bit of the good will they generated when it was announced.

No, wait, it's Sony, I can totally believe it.
