to anyone who wants a game based on Game of Thrones, buy Mount and Blade. It's seriously the closes thing you're gonna get.

It depends on whether you want guns or not. With Fire and Sword has old timey pistols and muskets. Warband does not.

You can skip the first since both are uniformly superior.

Warband is probably the best best tho.

Went ahead and picked up L.A. Noire while it was still $7.50. So far I've put an hour and a half into it and I'm really enjoying it. Maybe it's the setting more than anything else really, but I don't mind the slow pace or the issues with the interrogation [though I can see how the later would annoy people, sometimes it's hard to figure out what the game wants you to do]. Anyway, I certainly don't regret buying it.

I'm probably one of the few here who ended up enjoying it overall. I think enjoying the setting and playing it to see the story unfold rather than playing it to enjoy it will help how you perceive it. And for ~$5 there's a good amount of content.

I can definitely see the problems that a lot of people had, but there not really bothering me too much so far. I like driving around and searching the crime scenes and piecing together the evidence, all that stuff. I love the setting and stories, too, reminds me of The Naked City [which is actually referenced in one of the DLC cases] a movie I really enjoyed. Maybe if I'd paid $60 and been really hyped, the problems would be a bigger deal, though.

Wait, is Bastion good? Looks like some Boreans own it and it's metacritic score is 86. Looks alright, but I'm a bit full up on console-ish RPGs from this sale

Also, don't forget to vote Dead Space 2 folks!

The gameplay in Bastion is OK. However they shove a lot of obnoxious story in all around you that's reasonably well told but just too silly to be taken seriously. Overall I finished it and promptly forgot about most of it.

Edit: To the people above, Mount & Blade: Warband is the game to get. If you want guns, get the expansion for it instead of With Fire and Sword.

I am starting to doubt gifting certain people stuff because I never see them on Steam or playing a game so i feel like I wasted my money gifting them something despite them spending at least 50+ bucks in this sale. It is like they never play games on Steam but have no problem spending hundred on the sales. It makes no sense to me.

On the other hand, this is what finally made me make a backloggery account.

Wizorb is pretty cool but the stages stretch on a bit too long. One of the few games that does "retro style" graphics right - clean, with their own character, and with some great animations.

What is Dear Esther? Graphic adventure?

Dear Esther is like an art installation. You walk through it for an hour and it's VERY pretty and is more interested in evoking a theme and mood than forming a coherent narrative, and then it's over. It is VERY pretty however.

Dear Esther gave me a completely fresh perspective for video games. I really wish more developers would follow their experiment and simply remove all mechanics from your game if the focus is story. I think games like Call of Duty, Uncharted, Max Payne 3, et al. would benefit from being more like Dear Esther, and contain nothing but character movement while everything in the game automatically plays out. You get all the headshots, you come close to death a couple of times, and it's over in a few hours.

I feel like that's a more honest approach than their feeble attempts to shoehorn very shallow gameplay mechanics into something that is obviously meant to be a technical and artistic showpiece.

I am loving Wizorb at $1.79. As long as you know what it is (a very good, very standard Arkanoid game with cute pixel art) and what it isn't (a game with RPG elements, a game with spells or mechanical advances over the standard Arkanoid game), you'll get your $2 worth. It also requires you to actually play correctly and line up your shots with some precision, which is nice.

There's a bit more than that.  You have magic powers that use up mana, shops and currency, boss fights, and a town you can pay to rebuild.

It reminds me most of Thunder and Lightning on the NES, if anyone played that.  imo that and shatter are the best versions of breakout/arkanoid.

Joe is correct, there is no "RPG stuff." Don't believe Linkzg's lies.

You can spend your score to rebuild a town. THAT'S IT.

It's still totally great, it's just an RPG coat of paint on a mechanically ordinary, extremely well-executed Arkanoid clone.

Don't take this personally, but people like you are shitty for videogames.  Watch movies for stories.

You are mistaken, I wouldn't personally enjoy a game like that. I don't consider a narrative to be important or even necessary in the ingredients for a great video game.

What I'm saying is that it seems to be a popular choice among AAA game developers to fancy telling a story over building an experience around game mechanics. There is a thread on the first page about this very thing. I don't find it as offensive as Ruzbeh does that games are doing this, just dishonest, as I said before.

If your game is about a story, don't let me play it. Gameplay and story have conflicting goals. A story wants to move forward, a game wants to create adversity. I'm happy that a game like Dear Esther exists, because it shows the further side of the spectrum of what is possible in interactive entertainment. It's like the inverse of Tetris. Tetris is all game, no story. Dear Esther is all story, no game. Both are great for different reasons.

Raban- I don't understand how that's not basically a movie that you just happen to move an avatar around in.  Games should offer some sort of challenge, whether it be of the reflexes or the mind.  Something that doesn't shouldn't be called a "game" in my opinion, and the people who make and enjoy them should be drummed out of the hobby.

The problem is your taking your personal opinion and then sort of grafting it onto the public which doesn't really work without some data to back it up. What you described might work for you but I have a feeling it would not work for the masses.

There are cinematic games that lower the gameplay quotient to achieve a better story element. Heavy Rain whatever somebody thinks about it I believe does a good job of this. I could add games like the Walking Dead or Journey and some others to the list. But there is no current evidence to suggest that the people who play Call of Duty, Gears of War, Halo, Uncharted, etc are looking for this. They like the action mixed with setpieces and linearity. Because forum types may not like it doesn't mean the masses don't.

I also wouldn't necessarily use that thread made by Ruzbeh to denote anything other than nostalgia and an inability to accept that the world changes and things aren't always going to be what you want them to be.

In full disclosure never played Esther although I've heard it described enough from the types who love game as art.

Dear Esther is nothing like a movie.
Which gives me even less confidence then that whatever it is, is related to how the masses want to enjoy mainstream games.

I think Raban and even Ruzbeh in his very misguided way are trying to reflect their personal distate for a mainstream, linear, big budget style game. Which is fine on a personal level. I just think you have to sort of leave it as a personal critique. Rather than extrapolating it to the masses so easily.
