Jesus Christ. I'm getting tired of SR4. Is it impossible to play and enjoy both series without having to take a shit on the other?

I've been playing SR4 on PC. It's ok. GTA5 looks great as well, but for entirely different reasons.

Apparently not! Himu's last post in the SR4 thread was to completely trash it.

Agreed, Rah. At this point, SR4 deserves to be shat on due to its annoying fanbase. This coming from someone who's been a Saints fan since the first game.

Himuro gaming:  making bad decisions and then eventually admitting to them.  This is basically no different (and no less non-sensical) than buying a Wii so you could play the shittier version of Twilight Princess because you couldn't wait two weeks or a month or whatever it was for the GC version.  I eagerly look forward to your "so maybe GTAV isn't all that great" posts, then the inevitable "I'm disappointed in GTAV" and of course when you finally deign to sully your beautiful life with the superior game, the inevitable "HOLY FUCK SRIV IS SO FUCKING AWESOME" posts.

Not that we'll all be there every step of the way reminding you about it or anything.

Twilight Princess wii is great, at the time buying a Wii made sense - almost everyone on the board did so, GTAV looks great, SRIV looks great, shut the fuck up. I don't care, no one else in this thread cares. I'm going to play both games and you making this long ass critique because someone is buying a game they are anticipating is on high levels of distinguished mentally-challenged in its complete lack of empathy. Put down the asperg Kool-Aid, realize that the world isn't extreme and black and white as you make it, and rid yourself from this thread, if not for us, but for the sake of readability so you don't end up looking like a complete moron when the game comes out and it actually turns out to be a great game.

No one's giving you a hard time because you're more excited about GTAV than Saints Row 4, they're giving you a hard time because of this seemingly bizarre/random 180 you pulled in the last couple of weeks leading up to SR4's release. Before you were falling all over yourself with excitement, and rightly so, and now you come across as completely ambivilant towards it. Your reasonings seem to boil down to 1. it's too similar to SR3 [which is ridiculous] and 2. that it's way too short and light on content [which is also ridiculous]. Whatever, though. Enjoy GTAV, I guess.

I'm just trying to save money on it. My computer isn't that great and I have to run SR3 on low, I don't want to buy it on ps3. I should be getting a new computer soon that'll run it better, with it at a cheaper price. Also, trailers leading up to release showed very little anything new, to the point where Volition staff expressed their disdain with the latest batch of trailers due to the lack of new content, being able to 100% the game in 20 hours is not a ridiculous claim that the game is light on content. My worries were that SR4 was possible rushed out product, similar to SR3. I prefer SR2 to SR3. I'd much rather wait a few weeks and get GTAV, which I know won't be light on content, off and online.

Initial reveal, SR4 looked fine. But a month before release, we see the same old shit? It's not going to do much to sway me into buying it. Signal up a GTAV gameplay trailers, which looks refreshing and something I want right now, and I'm even less impressed with the SRIV media releases. I am extremely picky with games I buy on release, or buy close to release, most games I buy at a discount. My most important requirement for a 60 dollar game, is a game that is content rich. If I can see everything there is to do in the game in 20 hours, I have little obligation to buy it. You played Skyrim, right? How many hours did you pluck into Skyrim? 100? How would you feel if the sequel to Skyrim, is a game with far, far less content, but it's still a great game? How about we make the sequel to THAT, a game you can experience everything in 20 hours? Fuck that. I'm not buying that at release. Everything after that is a replay, but it's still not exactly new content. I play sandbox games for content, it is that simple.

Games I have bought this year:

Monster Hunter 3U - 100 hours clocked
Animal Crossing: New Leaf: 150 hours clocked
SMT4 - 60 hours clocked

Notice a pattern? What do you think I value in a genre that's seemingly about exploration and fucking around? GTAV is a game that is guaranteed to last me 100 hours. Every numbered GTA has. That game is out what, three weeks after SR4? SR4 is what, a game you see everything in 10 hours? Get 100% in 20 hours? It costs, how much exactly? It takes place in the same city as 3? How much value is in this game? How long will I play it? Maybe I should concentrate on something besides games before GTAV comes out? Maybe I'd rather play something else in the mean time, rather than spend 30-50 bucks on a game I can beat in 10 hours in a genre that I play for exploration and content?

You're acting like this is a unique thing with me. It isn't. I passed on Etrian Odyssey IV because SMT4 and Soul Hackers were right around the corner. I have Soul Hackers sitting here, I have clocked all of an hour because SMT4 takes priority over it. Waste of money.

Lesson one about my buying habits: I am rarely, rarely ever disappointed in games I buy. The reason I raise a storm when I *am* disappointed in a game is because I'm meticulous with what I buy: I know what I like, and I'm rarely disappointed.

Goddamn, I should play some Dynasty Warriors 8 before GTAV drops, haven't gotten to that yet, but instead I guess I'm guess I'm explaining to people word by word about the merits of waiting, buying for cheap, and enjoying a game you got for 20 bucks that has 20 dollars worth of content.

I told you once already, the timer in SR4 is basically meaningless because the super powers carve away about 75% of the busy work that most sandbox games saddle you with. And the super powers, combined with the alien/scifi/VR stuff, makes the city almost completely unrecognizable compared to SR3. Despite the few things that are the same, it's got a totally different feel.

And nobody paid $60 for the Steam version of SR4. It was $50 to begin with. $45 for people who owned SR3. And cards. I think I ended up paying around $37 for it.

You played Skyrim, right? How many hours did you pluck into Skyrim? 100? How would you feel if the sequel to Skyrim, is a game with far, far less content, but it's still a great game? Everything after that is a replay, but it's still not exactly new content. I play sandbox games for content, it is that simple.

That doesn't really work, because I probably put 200+ hours into Oblivion. Doesn't mean I enjoyed it more, though, far from it. I enjoyed Skyrim much more, and it all came down to how that content was handled. SR4 is shorter because it gets you right to the content as fast as possible. It doesn't take 10 minutes to drive to a mission, it takes 30 seconds to fly there. It doesn't take 10 minutes to fight off a wave of enemies with just a shotgun, it takes 5 seconds to freeze them with an ice blast and then shatter them to a thousand pieces with a shotgun.

Basically this.  If you had to do everything without powers (which are fucking FUN TO USE, by the way) the game would be twice as long at least.  I beat it earlier today at 22 hours with about 86%.

Have fun driving everywhere in GTAV though, I'm sure it'll be really fun.  If they bothered to make the cars not handle like ass.

I *do* understand your trepidations on a couple of fronts- I set the game to low on my pc too to improve performance, and it looks like ass.  Oh well.  My desktop is getting long in the tooth and I'm probably going to use my holiday bonus to build a new one.

And I (obviously) like games I spend a lot of time on.  I played Skyrim for about 50 hours... but we all know how much time I've spent playing D3.  And Puzzle & Dragons.  I like timesink, lifestyle type games.

But I also like FUN.  And I'm telling you, that game is just so much fucking FUN, man.  When you do finally get around to playing it, you're going to love the everliving fuck out of every minute of it.

Superpowers aren't a big bullet point to me. I don't really care about super powers, I just want cool guns and funny dialogue and lots of things to do. A lot of people are comparing it to Crackdown, but I never cared for Crackdown aside from in co-op mode. I also argue that not every game has to be like the other. I like driving and exploring in games. I don't see why I should never to be able to fly to enjoy a game. I don't really care if you people think SR4 is fun, as I'm pretty sure it is.

I think I'll put off buying SR4 until 2014 now.

Oscar, DQ2 is definitely a weird bag of chips. I've found I like it more on replays, though. :yeshrug

I definitely like DQ8 far less after playing other DQ's. It was my first DQ and it's just sparse with new content. It even retreads entire stories from past games and isn't as content heavy as 7, with far less depth, especially if we're talking about dungeons. And the only amount of customization is in how you allot skill points. It's pretty barren.

Himumu, what you're saying now, about wanting to play SR IV on a better machine than your current rig, and waiting for that upgrade also means you can get SR IV cheaper... it all makes sense.

I can't speak to why everyone else is ribbing you, but the reason I find your resistance entertaining is because of how quickly you go to entrenched, immovable mode on any given topic, which is how I perceived this at first.

You started both this GTA V thread and the SR IV thread, and were MADE OF HYPER for both of them, and then suddenly bailed on one. So it's also entertaining that this move feels in line with the mercurial passions I've seen you evidence regarding other games.

I will say that your steadfast desire to continue claiming that it's not a lot of content, or not sufficiently different from SR3 reeks of the same kind of ill-informed and stubborn positioning you evidenced against Red Dead Redemption... right up until you actually played it.

Also, as for GTA V and the number of hours you'll spend with it, you do realize that the online doesn't arrive until... is it October? GTA Online is being pitched as a "separate but free" component for everyone who buys GTA V. I'm baffled how they're calling it separate; it sounds like it will be a weighty piece of DLC, much like the GTA:SFLC series, and Max Payne 3's 7GB's worth of maps and modes packs. It'll require an inserted GTA V disc, I've little doubt.

Hopefully the offline stuff will keep you entertained until GTA:O launches.

Yeah, I dunno. I wonder about it myself, some days.

It's a title, so I have some lingering high school English class habit of needing to denote it. I tend toward italics for emphasis, and underlining anywhere on the Internet has become shorthand for hyperlink. So... bold.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, I am also one of those thin skinned gentlemen who becomes unreasonably insulted when people post "u" or "ur" or "ne1" instead of normal human language.

I usually like to mix up the genres/styles a bit when I play long games (i.e. play a cute easy RPG, then play a hard action game, then maybe something real over the top western or pretentious artsy-fartsy indie...), but if 2 similar games come out that I badly want to play, I'll go for it (played DDS2 followed by Soul Hackers and don't feel fatigued at all). I assume Saint's Row 4 and GTA5 are different enough (even in the same genre) that the experiences will still feel fresh. Worst-case scenario, just play a quick and short action game to cleanse the palate between titles...

Believe me, Chrono. I find it so completely comedic and entertaining as well. I was going to buy the game despite my waning disinterest because I'd be buying it for like 30 dollars. Then people are reportedly beating the story in 10 hours and getting 100% in 20. These aren't random numbers either, they're consistent across the board. It looks like a fun game, but I really, really want a game I can sink my teeth into right now and I'd rather just wait on it. I have no pretenses of the games quality, I have enjoyed every Saints game and everyone I've seen play SRIV has expressed adulation. It rubs me the wrong way that people are doing everything there is to see and do in the game in 20 hours, super powers or not. I can't explain why but it does and it was the final straw. Either way, for me, I get to wait a few months and get a price drop and more powerful hardware; win-win.

I beat SR3 and all the DLC with about 26 hours on the clock [and that includes a few hours of monkeying around for no reason]. Right now I've got 17 hours in SR4 with a few more main missions to go, and that's with the huge reduction in time it takes to do everything [as afforded by the super-powers].

Lack of content isn't an issue at all, believe me. And there's an insane amount of variety within that content, especially in the main story missions.

Beating the story at 26 hours is different from doing everything in the game (100%) in 20 Rumbler. You seem to lack the distinction between the two. This is important because exploring is my favorite part of sandbox games. If it takes 20 hours to get 100% how much new content is left? Not much. It could be balls off the wall fun, but you've essentially already exhausted the game of new content in 20 hours. The only thing left are replays which include co-op unless Volition have added a lot of secret places like they did to SR2 which is unlikely.

Right now I want a game I can bite into. Getting 100% in a sandbox game in 20 hours is not that game. I'll play something else and save my money instead.

I've done a much higher percentage of the side activities in SR3 than I have right now in SR4. I haven't sat down and compared the two closely, but it wouldn't surprise me if SR4 has more content overall than SR3 did with all the DLC included.

It rubs me the wrong way that people are doing everything there is to see and do in the game in 20 hours, super powers or not.

Yeah, I had a similar experience. I played the hell out of SR1 and SR2, with a stoopid amount of hours in each, FINALLY getting 100% in single player. I think I had 80 hours in SR1 before that happened, and I lost count in SR2 because I started over with Sceneman to get the Activities in Co-Op Achievement. I occasionally consider going back for the multiplayer stuff, but... no.

In contrast, it took me less than 30 hours to get 100% in everything in SR3, including the DLC. It is a great game, and it embraces the crazy, and it is worth every penny I paid for it... but I like SR2 better.

Back on topic, GTA IV had less to do overall compared to San Andreas, LCS, and VCS, none of which I've 100%'d. I've never been big for Hidden Packages. And yet, due to wanting the Achievement, my GTA IV 100% was finished off after chasing down stationary pigeons across four islands and shooting them. Laaaaaaaaaaame.

That's why I like SR2 more as well, Chrono. SR3 was a step down for all intents and purposes in every single category. My 360 clock for SR2 well exceeds over 100 hours easy and I don't see why people have an issue that I have a problem that each new SR game since 2 the clock time required to do everything goes lower, and I'm not supporting it. I shouldn't be chastised for avoiding the SR4 thread because I don't want to be spoiled.

GTAIV is heavily content averse. There's taxi missions but like, only 10 taxi missions. Total. Once you beat them you can never do them again. What the fuck. I'm glad that the expansions are much better with this.

...because what you're doing in those extra hours is boring?  I mean, that's a pretty good reason.

This must be what it's like what to have a small penis and being so self conscious of what others got. Instead of looking at other guys' penises, you're looking at what games they're playing on their steam library and going,"YOU PLAYED CRAZY TAXI, HOW DARE YOU"

It's adorable! :sabu

Saints Row 2 is endlessly entertaining. I think the real problem here is that you seem to play sandbox games for story and not content. Triumph? Playing for STORY? :sabu  :badass

Uh, no.  I play them for ENTERTAINING CONTENT.  Spergishly doing boring shit just to fill up a meter with no other real impactful benefits is dumb.  I play Skyrim and Fallout the same way- I do what I want.  If I find something interesting, I'll do all of that there is to do in that game.

I guess we just have different definitions of "entertaining."  I mean, I have put a shit ton of time into D3, so whatevs.  I just find your attempts to rationalize not playing a game I'm positive you would love the fuck out of comical.

(and I'm 99% sure GTAV is going to suck, also)
