Yeah, that's one of the funniest and most horrific scenes in the game.

That's on par with

Wow. The direction of this mission where you go back to the snow town is great. The flashback audio is amazing. And it really drives how much of a piece of shit Michael is. The whole package of this mission, from when Trevor comes into Michael's house, to the finally getting to New Yankton are wonderful in terms of cinematic prowess. Rockstar have really impressed me here in terms of the how they packaged this mission aesthetically. In terms of audio, direction, and visuals, they did a fantastic job.

Michael is a dick.

I'd forgotten about this mission; yeah, Michael is a self-victimizing jerk, taking zero responsibility for his own actions when they lead to bad situations. In contrast, it's easy to feel empathy with Trevor there, which is another accomplishment in the writing.

OTOH, I felt like that sequence recycled a number of Max Payne 3 assets to great effect. A good portion of that game takes place in a nearly visually identical environment. It sure works to add contrast!

Agreed: MP3 is a good game. The multiplayer is a bunch of fun as well.

The tone is superdarkserious, which is pretty much done to death, but the locations and sound and everything is so immersive, it is definitely worth playing. Also, the multiplayer is pretty great.

The underlying tech Rockstar's using is absolutely mindblowing. Probably the most complex game ever coded. Wouldn't mind reading a presentation on how they achieved what they did.

What's weird in the flood-mode is the physics moment where other entities such as cars and pedestrians enter the radius of the player. It looks like cars drive on the ground until they're within a feasible-interaction radius, at which point they enter the engine's physics model and, WHOOMMP, they're lifting toward the surface.

We could probably figure out a lot about their overall engine by looking at ways this breaks.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure there's a radius around the player where the game enables most of its logic, rendering oncoming vehicles and pedestrians while stuff in the far distance just goes through certain states, paths and animations. Otherwise the memory footprint would be massive and completely unplayable on consoles to say the least.

http://www.rockstargames.com/newswire/article/52186/Coming-this-Friday-The-GTA-Online-Valentine-s-Day-Massacr

Quote
The Valentine’s Day Massacre Special, the latest free update to GTA Online that’s coming this Friday features a variety of fun Valentine's themed extras for Story Mode and GTA Online.

NEW WEAPON: GUSENBERG SWEEPER
Nothing says “I love you” quite like the warm wooden grip and cold steel barrel of a Gusenberg Sweeper machine gun. Get it from any Ammu-Nation location in GTA Online (in Story Mode, the Sweeper is automatically deposited into each character's weapon inventory with two full clips and additional ammo can be purchased at Ammu-Nation).

NEW VEHICLE: ALBANY ROOSEVELT
Paint the town red in the classically-inspired Albany Roosevelt. This armored 1920s limousine is perfect for gangsters and their molls. To properly run amok with the new Roosevelt, get in the driver’s seat and let your friends or Crewmates hang off the side, firing and taking out your rivals as you pass them by. The Roosevelt can be accessed from any garage property in Story Mode and is available in GTA Online from the legendarymotorsport.net in-game website.

NEW ATTIRE
Dress to the nines in a host of new double breasted suits and 1920s flapper dresses, or bare it all in sexy undergarments while going incognito with a selection of new masquerade masks. There are also new novelty t-shirts, hats and more available in stores throughout Los Santos, plus a new Flapper Bob hairstyle exclusively for the ladies.

10 NEW JOBS
The Valentine’s Day Massacre also includes 10 new Jobs scattered like the remnants of a broken heart throughout the world of GTA Online, including Deathmatches, a new Parachute Jump and new land, sea and cycling Races.

Everything in the Valentine’s Day Massacre Special will be available for a limited time starting this Friday, but once acquired you will be able to keep them in your inventory for good. We will also have more information soon for other forthcoming GTA Online content updates including the Dangerous Business Pack, Online Heists, an expansion to the Creator tool and lots more.

Excited for new content, but particularly happy now that the new content is permanent if owned. I didn't buy any of the Xmas stuff because I thought it went away after Jan 6th.

I wonder if Rockstar will include horse racing at any point. I mean, they went through the trouble of including a horse racing track, but there's no gambling in Story or Online mode.  ???

Can't play GTA V while logged into XBL.

Don't know what the exact cause is, but I suspect the Title Update is being hammered so hard for the online event that XBL's own "disconnect user, offer download, download, re-login user" path is being disrupted somewhere in the middle of that flow.

Guess I'll actually do some work...

The new car is 750,000 so fuck that lol. You can get a Rat Loader pickup truck free and mod it for free, which is pretty cool. New clothes are neat, as are they new jobs I've played so far.

Jumped into creator for the first time and made a pretty wacky race. It's quite fun, some big jumps and stuff. Hosted a few matches and peeps were voting to replay, so it must be OK! I can see myself getting hooked on creator lol.

Bebs! It looks more like Bebs' dad might look, but yeah.

In other news, I finished the Kifflom! set of missions last night; the penultimate one is a total time wasting chore, and the game designer for it should have his dick stapled to an angry pig. Or forced to do the same monotony from his mission in real life. What a drag! At least I'm $2.1M richer now.

The Valentine's Day Massacre online event was a blast, but their street sweeper/tommy gun is a piece of crap! It might be modeled on something historically correct, but it was just useless, even in Gang Attack missions. The thing is an inaccurate mess. New '20s clothes are pretty awesome though. I blew a chunk of cash on them.

Yeah I'm very happy with my Scrooge McDuck footwear (I forget what those things are called).

A shame the car is out of my reach though. No way I'm going to get 750 grand anytime soon. I'm going to stockpile some cash in preparation for any future special events.

I like the exclusivity aspect of this kind of promotion.

"Spats."

Yeah, I think the economy works pretty well in GTA Online after they patched out the exorbitant cost of dying in Free Mode. I am happy to pay some money, actually feel some burn for owning something in the game in their economy, have it be a source of choice.

Everything in the Beach Bum Pack is available still, and available for free. As such, there's absolutely nothing pushing me to have it now. Groovy van, dune buggy, board shorts... who cares? But knowing these Mardi Gras masks and double-breasted pinstripe suits will not be around forever, I feel compelled to get them just in case they're not there later. It's providing perceived scarcity, which drives consumer desire.

Even the Rat-Loader is implied that the free-upgrades are only free until the end of this promotion.

But there's no way I'll get $750K together for that classic-styled coupe.

I'm going through the collectibles and trying to wrap this up. I re-finished the Story yesterday.

Rockstar's had 3 Title Updates since the first time I finished the Story mode, but the bug which makes phone/Internet/UI stop displaying after accessing the default homepage is still present, despite their claim that it's been fixed. It's a common problem. I had hoped it would disappear, but I'm going to have to re-play the Story to get the Downtown Cab "special ride" Achievement anyway, since NONE of my purchased Properties have any kind of work associated with them. So it looks like a grind through the Space Ship Parts, Letter Scraps, and the Knife Flights and Under the Bridge spots and Unique Jumps.

Then I will probably restart the game with fresh data which apparently doesn't suffer from the property or internet bugs.

I am really loving this game, though somehow I'm just a shade less satisfied with it than I was with Red Dead Redemption. I mean, it's crazy. It's nearly perfect, but something about RDD really red-dead-did it for me. With enough new content and this economy they've got going, I'll eventually accept that this is the better game, but hey.

There's a "GTA IV Walkabout" series on Dead End Thrills. It's all gorgeous, but the pic above (warning: large) sums up much of what was wrong with the game for me. There's a skate park, a fully built skate park, in Liberty City. I played the game to 100% completion and never saw this location. If I'd found it, there are no skateboards or bicycles in LC.

This big, ornately rendered, but unusable skate park just summarizes GTA IV for me so well.

Ha, ha, haaaa. Just wait until the penultimate mission for the cult.
spoiler (click to show/hide)
You literally have to run around the desert for 5 CONSECUTIVE miles, and if you stray from the cult's designated area, the counter resets. The final mission redeems this, in terms of money received for effort made though.

But you're right, there is at least one game designer at Rockstar who just hates the player, and wants them to become bored and frustrated. I started that 30 minute marathon on a day when I didn't have much time to play. Other foot races had been like 5 minutes, so I figured "why not?" -- FML

Business Update is live. From March 7-9, all air races get bonus RP (XP) and all land races get bonus GTA$ payouts.

New weapons are pretty neat. Heavy Pistol and Special Carbine. I used the latter in Free Mode yesterday, and managed to repeatedly drill two griefers who were feeling pretty great about their Buzzard Attack Chopper right up until that point.

Up to 96.3% as of this morning, finished up the letter scraps and spaceship parts as well as their related Strangers and Freaks missions. That letter one's pretty damned creepy.

I've got the flight stunts and regular road jumps to go, and then I'm done. Sadly, it looks like the SocialClub's Checklist map doesn't cover those. It was really helpful for the various letter scraps and spaceship parts. As usual, I'd gotten to the end of the set, and there were a few still missing; the Rockstar map showed me exactly which ones I still had to grab. I get the feeling I'm going to by flying through quite a few tricky gaps and jumping and re-jumping several spots before I'm done.  :-\

Thanks a bunch!

Whoa, my map now has 40 likes and 59 plays!

So plays must count players that have done the job, not just the amount of lobbies/games hosted overall?

And best of luck for the driving and plane stunts. Such an oversight those aren't included on the Social Club site, when all the collectibles are.

I systematically went through stunt jump 1-50 using a guide, ditto for under the bridge and knife flights. Be careful with under the bridge - some of them are difficult to register - so don't assume you have done it already! I had to go through all 50 like 3 times to get the one I missed  :-\ Knife Flights aren't bad as there's only like 10 or so. A couple will test your Lazer skills!

Sometimes smaller is better. I'll be using a stunt plane for the Knife Flights. That one UFO part on the bridge, I managed to park my Buzzard on the gap between the bridge surface and the support structure. :pimp I wouldn't have been able to do it with a Maverick, Annihilator, or Frogger.

Holy crap! I thought the only way to get that one was to parachute in (which wasn't easy I might add).

Yeah, AchievementHunter.com had a video showing the dude parachuting in, and all I could think about is how pissed I'd be if I missed that jump. I'd already been randomly killed by a couple of weird glitches and, having taken ten minutes to get back to the previous spot, I wasn't anxious to give parachuting the several attempts it looked like it'd need.

As it was, parking the helicopter took a good three minutes, but I felt like James Bond. Even had Franklin in the right tuxedo for it.
