Yeah, got the key for that but have a feeling it's going to be pretty janky trash for another year or so.  Will take a peak at it and then wait for the finished game eventually.

It's a little rough around the edges right now, but a lot of that is just a clunky, bare-bones UI. That's my take from playing an hour's worth, anyway.

so the matsuno kickstarter is going to end in a week and is still 150,000 dollar shorter...

happy times for me and oscar! :jawalrus

And now it's funded. You'll have to go find your happy times elsewhere.

and all they had to do was collapse half of their stretch goals into the initial budget.

i'm still pretty happy, because that alone has to hurt them.  also, no alex o smith translation or console ports, so the matsuno fans are gonna be qq'ing up a storm.

yup yup

i can already taste himuro delicious tears

Nah, not really. It only took a little work in the beginning when I set up the thread, now I just check occasionally on KS to look up successfully funded projects and the KS thread on SA for projects that are being released.

I get such a guilty pleasure reading about Kickstarter failures like this. The level of mismanagement and incompetence these mooks display is staggering. You get fifty grand to make a game and what do you do? Rent a house and hire a bunch of people! Complain that the artist is unproductive and doesn't do any work!

I like the touch of a youtube update six months in where they're like "oh yeah, we need another quarter million dollars" which is always a good sign.

Anyone want to share why they think some Kickstarter projects are successful and some aren't? What do you think gets an idea funded and why some fail?

The most successful usually tie into nostalgia of some kind [a sequel or revival of an old game that people liked, or a big name who's making a comeback], but there are a few that just managed to look good enough on their own merits that they didn't need nostalgia to do well. The former is definitely favored, though.

I hope these teams stick around to make a second game. Of course I appreciate reviving old genres and series, but it'll be cool when some of them start on their next idea.

If you want a lot of money, you need big names with big nostalgia.  If you want a little money, you need a decent idea and to appear like you can actually execute it.

Thanks guys. I'm helping with a Kickstarter at the moment and was wondering what the general consensus was with why things get funded. My thoughts were pretty much identical to yours since it seems everything on Kickstarter for gaming is mainly Nostalgia driven. It's a tough hill to climb if you're a new idea and a small studio.

Nah, the key to getting big money on KS is the following:

-complain about how THE SUITS stifle your creativity, they only wanted you to make a wartime FPS and wouldn't support your vision of REAL gaming!

-say that your REAL GAME is inspired by Zelda, Metroid, Dark Souls, and 2 more cliche franchises.

-make sure that more of the pitch is talking about the game and its promises.  Make the promises as vague as possible so people can fill in the gaps on their own, obviously your game sill be their ideal vision of a game.

Maybe I'm being a bit excessive but some people are so bad with pledging on KS, it's almost frustrating to hear someone say "woah, they say it's like Metroid and Dark Souls!  Let me get my wallet!"

I like the crazy ones which state stretch goals such as "for +$50,000 more, it's an MMO!"

That sentence looks exactly like this picture in my head:

Jane Jensen's Moebius, Tesla Effect [the new Tex Murphy], and the second part of Broken Sword 5 are all out later this month, if you're interested in old-school adventure games.

Also, Carmageddon: Reincarnation is out on Steam Early Access, but apparently it's still really rough right now, apparently.

Shadowrun: Online is also out on Steam Early Access, but I literally know next to nothing about it.

Cosmochoria has been funded at 286% of the original goal. Extremely happy for this. The dev sounds like a great dude and the game seems pretty far along already.

The tire and terrain deformation is really cool though. I think I read about this on RPS ages ago. That six-wheeled monstrocity looks familiar.

I'm not sure how you could classify this as WF's "scraps." If anything that should be used to describe their licensed stuff. This is obviously one of their most passionate projects.

The PAX demo was easy for the most part with bits of difficulty peppered in.

shovel knight isn't made by wayforward, it's made by a studio called yacht club games made up of people that worked for wayforward (which is why i said "wayforwards scraps"), the founder is called sean velasco and worked on these games
