Well Wagner depends on the Russian military for their hardware but there's a feud between the Russian MoD and Prigozhyn.

It started when Prigozhyn started to call out the Russian MoD for their failures and that Wagner had to pick up the pieces.
But Prigozhyn was in jail once so they had a convict record a testimony that Prigozhyn was the 'lowest of the low' prison ermm "bait" and they cut off supplies.
However as of late Putin is hiding in his bunker and cancelling public events while Prigozhyn is campaigning, visiting wounded men, picking up bodies from the morgue, visiting Ukrainian POW's and grave sites.

Some seem to think Prigozhyn is challenging Putin but I think he's just another form of 'controlled opposition' if the vets or convicts angry at the regime or military join Wagner instead of the army, they still end up fighting on the front lines and not at Red Square.

Iran has summoned the French ambassador over publication of caricatures of the country’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

The weekly magazine published dozens of cartoons ridiculing the highest religious and political figure in the Islamic republic as part of a competition it launched in December in support of the protest movement that began in Iran last September.

Later on Wednesday, Iran’s foreign ministry said it had summoned the French ambassador, Nicolas Roche.

“France has no right to insult the sanctities of other Muslim countries and nations under the pretext of freedom of expression,” said a foreign ministry spokesperson, Nasser Kanani. “Iran is waiting for the French government’s explanation and compensatory action in condemning the unacceptable behaviour of the French publication.”

The foreign minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, tweeted: “The insulting and indecent act of a French publication in publishing cartoons against the religious and political authority will not go without an effective and decisive response.”

Without spelling out the consequences, he added: “We will not allow the French government to go beyond its bounds. They have definitely chosen the wrong path.”
Weren't they just complaining about westerners meddling in their affairs?

I always love when these countries are demanding more free countries explain why people are allowed to do things in their countries. :lol

Freedom of the press, not freedom from consequences in South Sudan as security forces crack down on disinformation:

Six journalists have been detained by South Sudan security forces over viral footage of the country’s president apparently urinating on himself, a press freedom watchdog has reported.

The clip, filmed during an official event, shows South Sudanese leader Salva Kiir standing for the national anthem, initially oblivious as a stain spreads on his trousers and a pool forms at his feet. The camera abruptly turns away after Kiir and his entourage appear to notice what is happening.

On Friday, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reported that six journalists for the state-run South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC) had been detained by the country’s National Security Service under suspicion of an unauthorised release of the footage.

Russia has shaken up their general staff and command structure for what they call a 'bigger set of tasks' for the 'Combined forces' of the Special Military Operation.
While others say they have simply run out of ideas and this is just theatrics.

The Russian MOD denies reports from Wagner that they captured Soledar and says the fighting is still ongoing.

Bad news from Ukraine all around. German intelligence estimates 3 digit losses around Bakhmut daily.

Not sure if the third army they're currently building with NATO supplies is going to help turn the tide.
Ukraine now has to throw in their reserves to hold their ground.

I don't get why the Biden administration doesn't call Germany's bluff and just send a symbolic number of Abrams tanks to Ukraine.

Germany is hiding behind the excuse that America should make the move first while America says the Abrams tanks are ill-suited for Ukraine and the German Leopards are what's really needed.

In a worst case scenario, Ukraine still gets new tanks if America moves first, albeit "ill-suited ones". Even if Germany sends none, if they get to lift the contractual obligations that prevents other NATO countries from sending their own leopard tanks, that's even more progress.

The problem is that we don't have those tanks in big numbers.

On paper the Netherlands has tanks but in reality we're leasing 16 tanks from the Germans for 'training' twice a year. A lot of European equipment exists on paper but is not combat ready in any shape or form, especially when it comes to ground units.
Some stuff is stored in Switzerland for safe keeping but the Swiss do not allow it to be transported to Ukraine. In other cases the vehicles are there but there isn't enough ammo. Most European armies have highly trained air forces and naval units not tank formations.

Ukraine is pretty much spent after a year of fighting. They need to raise, train and equip entire new armies which is getting more and more difficult to do.

Ukraine has already said what they need:
“I know that I can beat this enemy. But I need resources. I need 300 tanks, 600-700 ifvs, 500 Howitzers.” (Valery Zaluzhny)
This is already revised down from the 1000 tanks and 2000 vehicles they initially wanted.

When it comes to tanks about 10% - 20% have been pledged post Rammstein, in terms of IFV's about 50% and for Howitzers about 10% - 20%.

Europe doesn't have this stuff or the Ukrainians aren't trained in using it. The best solution would be to get India on board with the allies but instead they've been lectured and bullied so they're unwilling to play ball.
India has about 5k upgraded Soviet-type tanks that Ukraine knows how to use.

We need a fast and practical solution not a 'wunder waffen' that requires training and maintenance like the Leopard 2. They'll just be scattered without fuel on the roads leaving Kyiv like the Tiger 2's.
It's a good thing that the US is stepping up with Strykers and the French are sending the AMX 10-RC.

The fighting around Bakhmut has drained the Ukrainian army. Wagner is posing next to Ukrainian vehicles which are pretty much technicals at this point (trucks with guns mounted on them).
I understand why the media/NATO doesn't want to focus on the desperate situation on the front lines because it would make others even more reluctant to support the cause but the situation is grim.

The Krauts are compromised and have been pissing about for a year now. There's no normalising relations with Russia, and cheap Russkie gas isn't coming back. Either send the tanks or Poland will do it for them by getting involved militarily, And then we're all in the shit.

Read a piece on the new German defense minister. He has 0 experience in foreign policy or military matters. Just another pencil pusher.

A lot of contradicting rumors going around, some say that Zelensky is refusing to retreat from Bakhmut as it is part of what is dubbed "The Zelensky line" other sources say that the Ukrainian general does not want to give up the town and has refused orders to retreat.
Some towns in the rear of Bakhmut are seemingly under attack by Wagner forces. Wagner has also send 20 trucks filled with bodies of fallen UFA soldiers from Soledar to the Ukrainian side.

I'm not sure what the right move is myself. Retreating to a new defensive line is dangerous as a retreating army is at its most vulnerable. Ukraine does not have the number of planes or artillery to cover a large retreat so it would have to be done in small units.
However staying at the current line doesn't seem viable either. The frontline area is bombed constantly and the cities and villages have been completely destroyed. The soldiers are sitting in primitive trenches hoping the artillery misses fighting off waves of enemy attacks.

Nope he has been the interior minister for the state of Lower Saxony since 2013, but up until now has never held a position at the federal level.

Although it's hard to imagine he'll do a worse job than Lambrecht

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Lambrecht came under fire as defence minister before she took office in December 2021, for having no experience in the defence sector.

One month into office, she made headlines when she refused to deliver weapons to Ukraine and instead offered to send 5,000 helmets – which Kyiv’s major Wladimir Klitschko called “a joke” at the time.

The incident was only the first of many faux pas plaguing the German defence ministry. Only a few months later, it became public that she had taken her son with her on a trip in a Bundeswehr helicopter, which sent her approval ratings plummeting.

According to a poll released earlier this month, as many as 77% of Germans wanted her to resign, the lowest approval for a defence minister ever measured.

Lambrecht blamed her bad public image primarily on the media.
