My dad called me today and said “you know, I thought the scientists were all crackpots and global warming is fake, but there is some autistic kid on tv and I think she’s really into something... it’s like that sweet boy in the sixth sense!”

occam where you from bro? which country?

I'm 90% sure Germany now

I'm from Cosmopolis, allowing for a more global/holistic view on most issues (that and I don't let ideology get in the way of rationality, which is rather helpful).

There's always something a little unsettling about a poster child. But it doesn't diminish the merit of the agenda of course.

She is old enough to be likely operating off her free will.
The unsettling bit is when you've got people using really young kids like a prop. Like the, "my 3 year old totally said blah blah blah".
Nah, he/she sure didn't ya cringey goof

I’m sure she’s operating on her own free will...

The cringe comes from the adults that enable her and claim to be inspired by her or whatever.

Like, you’re going to rely on a fucking child to tell you what to do? Can’t figure out the right thing to do until a ten year old tells you?

Also, a lot of these kids get ass pats from adults and are trotted out like heroes only to sort of regret it later, or at least be put into a position to regret it later. I think about like that kid CH Pearson thst just coons for trump and that other right wing kid
https://www.salon.com/2012/07/08/i_was_a_right_wing_child_star/

It’s just distasteful to try to put the burden of the worlds problems or your ideology or whatever on fucking kids. Even if they are doing it of their own free will they are being used because they don’t know any better.

We’ve all watched Evangelion and are better than this. Don’t be a Genji Imari bros.

What can be said?
People love to form a cult of personality and idolize messianic figures. Be it BernBoys, MAGAs, Nintenyearolds and Shiggy/Iwata.

The kid isn't being forced into this role, the people just want Climate Jesus.

While your dad might be a lost cause, if Greta gets even 100 people to think about better habits (forget action with companies or politicians) that's good praxis.

i'm gonna need a lot more than a 100 new people recycling their empty beer cans to consider it worth the investment of having to put up with the cult of Greta.
on the flip side, she did force her mom to change her scene from opera to musical because she was no longer allowed to fly to gigs, so there's already something good coming out of this  :doge

But to be serious, i think she's doing fine - and if she starts conversations that eventually lead to political parties around the world adopting greener platforms, that's worth it.

so this is the big question mark for me and if businesses and countries build greener policies into practices and agreements off of the back of this, then great. otherwise this'll just be a trendy thing to harp on about for a bit and then everyone just goes back to as they were

Spanish justice ruled unanimously in favour of the government moving the remains of Franco from the massive mausoleum they currently rest at to a more modest burial place, alongside his wife. There's still a number of delaying requests and appeals from Franco's family and supporters but it seems solid that this approval will stand on principle.

The writing is a bit zany but it's getting the point across and he's obviously referencing literature and, dare I say, some classic Monty Python style humor. It's a good fit for him, actually.

If the pipeline isn't built, it's not as if Alberta will keep its oil in the ground. It will just use rail. This might slightly decline oil and gas production, but that won't reduce local or world demand--which will just be met by the US or some other country. Instead, Canada should focus primarily on deceasing its own demand for oil, through car pricing.

2 billion trees sounds like a lot, but that would only increase Canada's total by less than 1% (which is not to say it shouldn't be done).

Yeah, I don't feel particularly guilty over this country's Oil&Gas. I'm environmentally-minded, but I don't feel bad since this country is doing a bit better on the whole human rights and environment standards business  nowadays than the other producer countries. Not going to hobble the country just to give other countries a favour.

I wish our oil money would go to something better than making Albertans feel like they don't need to pay taxes, but other than that I'm fine with it.  We can't really switch to electric cars at this point and most of the country doesn't have the density to make public transportation an affordable option - though  I wish that we could use more of that money to invest in these areas.  You could argue that cheaper gas makes it harder for Saskatchewan and Alberta to switch from their gas powerplants, but really the only alternative they have is nuclear, which, regrettably, is an unlikely switch.   So cutting oil and gas production would really only try to discourage importers from using gas but we don't have the production really achieve that, especially now that America has upped their production that last two decades.

Houthi rebels in Yemen say they have captured a large number of Saudi troops after a major attack near the border between the two countries.

A Houthi spokesman told the BBC that three Saudi brigades had surrendered near the Saudi town of Najran.

He said thousands of soldiers had been captured and many others killed. Saudi officials have not confirmed the claim.

The operation was the largest of its kind since the conflict began, the spokesman said.

Colonel Yahiya Sarea said Saudi forces had suffered "huge losses in life and machinery".

All those captured would be paraded on the Houthi-run Al Masirah TV network on Sunday, he added.
No idea how true it'll end up being, but the Saudi army really is the gift that just keeps on giving.

At this rate the Houthi's will capture Riyad by winter.

This is a really complacent attitude to take about something that could potentially kill us all. Surely any decline in oil and gas production is worthwhile, especially coming from the fourth leading producer of oil in the world? Not to mention all the emissions caused in the process of extraction and that building more infrastructure is only going to increase the importance of oil production and create more vested interests opposed to the absolutely essential transfer to other energy sources.
