https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/klaus-hardy-breslauer-teacher-suspended-1.5586364

Quote
B.C. teacher who told exchange students to 'go back to working on rice farms' suspended 3 days

Quote
    Accused students of cheating and told them they deserved to contract sexually transmitted diseases for doing so;
    Refused to give a Grade 10 student permission to use the bathroom because "you cannot run away from life's problems";
    Told students they would end up at "loser Langara," a reference to Vancouver's Langara College, if they did not improve their marks;
    "Frequently" discussed his personal life and sex life with students;
    Said boys are gifted at rubbing rods and he had a lot of experience doing so, during a science experiment involving black rods;
    Acted rudely and dismissively toward students' parents;
    Allowed students to fill out part of their own report cards because he was too lazy to do it himself.

Quote
Breslauer also had more than 700 racist, homophobic, sexist and transphobic memes on his work computer, some of which he created himself and shared with students.

The whole thing is wild.

If we aren't selling it all to China any more, that means there's more pork for americans and the escalating prices can go down. Right?right?  :goty2

I miss that youtube channel. They just kinda stopped over a year ago no? Like I remember the video leading up to the Eagles Patriots Superbowl and then it just kinda went silent not too long after that.

France has seen some ripples from the situation in the US : A few days ago thousands demonstrated -despite the authorities denying the permit because of the "public health situation"- in front of the Paris court against police brutality (specifically the death of Adama Traoré in 2016, who was under duress of a knee-hold while being arrested, complained he had difficulty to breathe, was apparently feeling ill as he was brought to the Gendarmerie barracks and died on the premises.). Some more protests happened today and yesterday.

A private Facebook group for cops (or alleged/posing) with thousands of members was outed for some of the racist shit posted in there by some. Likewise French German broadcast station Arte had an investigation about how the colleagues of a black cop were talking about him in a private social media group and it was some nasty general and individual racist shit. Not that it would make it any better really but they didn't even extend the "one of the good ones" deflection to him.

And some of you probably remember that during the Yellow Vest movement, French police went hogwild with "flashballs" and maimed several dozen people (eyes, hands, heads...) in the space of a year.

There's maybe, more or less, a dozen people "only" per year killed as a result of law enforcement as far as I can tell. But while the US is just off the charts with how gung-ho the cops get, it's really more or less the same issues on a smaller scale.

I mentioned it a couple of times but there's been a clear, felt and factual, regression in how French police handle protests since the early aughts towards a more confrontational, repressive method too.

Canada too, and we don't have great stats on police killings (or BIPOC community trust).  For us, if there is actually police reform in the US, I feel like we'd get it eventually, so what happens in the US will directly affect us.  It's just happening sooner than I thought it would.

Pretty sure cops have always been bad everywhere.  They have become more militarized true, but they just had different ways of abusing power 30 years ago.   To be a technocrat, I think the current anti-cop phenomenon is mostly driven by smartphones - they just can't hide public abuses anymore.   What worries me is that I think the whole criminal justice system is completely fucked and there are a lot of police abuses that are not filmable, and I think we are going to completely ignore that stuff if changes are made.

Castle Super Beast podcast (yes, the Let's Play, Super Best Friends guys) had a talk about this, and Woolie mentioned a Twitter thread about an academic researcher that apparently came to the conclusion through his own study that body cams and "bias training" only had very marginal effects on curbing police misbehaviours. Seemingly simple shit as actually enforcing strict policies on cops for a proportional response apparently will do most of the work. I don't know what I think about the "bias training" thing, I guess it depends what is actually defined under it because there's some evidence that US police training has been tainted in many places by a prevalent, paranoid and hysterical "kill before getting killed" priority and on first instinct I would imagine there's a correlation there. I also would hope that bodycams, while not deterring those wearing them, would help in documenting abuses and bring more evidence more often in court.

My favorite thing about France is how every once in a while the firefighters get together and just whip the cops asses.
