This entire thing just reads like a nintendo fan's wet dream where he's the hero who brings light to the people who just don't know how great the WII U REALLY IS!

I mean who the hell watches someone play a demo kiosk? Has anyone ever stopped and looked at someone play at one of those and go "Oh man look at you, you're so great and awesome at this game". I'm surprised the story didn't end with a cute girl coming up to the op and ask if his amazing skills at playing kids games translated into the sac. I mean his skills were so impressive and his words so persuasive he was able to convince a dude to drop what $300+ on a system he didn't have a clue about and was clearly at the store for something else.

Though I guess I shouldn't talk. I just got back from a used game/well used media store in one of the more hispterish parts of Chicago. I did think to myself that man it would be cool to work here and this would be kind of a dream job. I mean I was talking to the clerk about Digital Devil Saga and the time before that Gitaroo Man.

But I mean I say that as a 20 something looking for a simple part time job, not as some career. Talking about video games and stuff I like would be cool as a job, but I'm not looking to do that my whole life. Besides the reason I'd like to work that has less to do with being surrounded by things I like, but more to do with the setting and climate of the area. The people who work there seem chill and my kind of people. Plus it being a "hot" part of the city plenty of hot women for me to look at and not talk to because I'm a dude working at a nerd store.

I was just going through some of my old GAF bookmarked threads and I came upon these two now banned members:

Sethos, PC gamer and contributor.

Sinitar, long time member he joined in 2004 now perm banned? don't know why.

You ever think about some of the high quality posters that gets lost over the years because of trivial shit?

Sometimes I feel maybe long time members who contributed a lot over the years shouldn't get thrown out over posting that one bad post.

If memory serves, Sethos copped 2 or 3 temporary bans in the six months before his current ban (which I presume is a perma), and in all likelihood they weren't the only preceding ones. Granted, he generally stuck to PC tech and modding-related topics, in which he was a valuable resource, but there's no denying he also had a habit of flying the PC gaming banner a little too proudly -- instigative "system wars" behaviour like that culminates in a one-way ticket and always has.

12 pages of one dude posting to himself

Didn't somebody do this with a thread promoting their music or something?

After he was juniored there was a period of about a month where he'd post just about every PC gaming news article he found in the Steam threads. They were news thread OPs, basically, possibly in an attempt to get his thread posting priveleges back seeing as Stump's an admin these days and keeps a reasonably close eye on said threads.

Why was Huelen banned in the first place?

He was strongly invested in the topic of Sonic's eye colour. I know that sounds like a joke, but it's not.

Too bad we know otherwise.  It's cute when they think they know better, too.

Retail, especially customer service, can be soul-crushing.  I don't want to work retail ever again unless I'm really strapped for cash to pay rent/for food.  A lot of people going out of their way to glamorize the job without likely having to do it full time to support themselves or a family really haven't experienced the real world, or how much people can be assholes towards you and treat you like a scapegoat when they didn't get what they wanted or are surprised to spend more money than they'd budgeted.  Or when people start getting concerned that you aren't selling as much as you should, then you'd feel pressured.

You're kidding.  That has to be a joke.   :lol

From what I remember before he was juniored, many of his OPs consisted of copy/pasting the entire article or trying to frame the article around headers and subheaders/highlight tags then making his own assumptions as he went.  It was the most peculiar thing, especially when his own regular posts looked like that (ex: this post about Something Awful/"goon culture" whatever it is, and Star Citizen: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=110801527&postcount=560).  It was really really weird.

Dude must be trying to get a job in the game journalism business.

Sethos is a good example because he contributed a lot to NeoGAF even though I grant you that he could come off a little harsh.

But then you have the legions of shit posters who contribute nothing but noise.

My point was that if you bump off all the members who contribute stuff all the time but maybe can be seen as stand-offish then you end up with an echo chamber for a board.

Still don't know what happened to Sinitar........he was a member since 2004 for christ sakes, and he also seemed fair and level-headed. I hope he comes back.

Sure, I understand that, but I'd say the particular detail that did Sethos in was the frequency -- when you come back from a ban only to find yourself in the sin bin a (relatively) short time later, it just projects the understanding that you're not learning from your mistakes. Derrick's final ban was similar:  he had salient points relating to modern game design and its tendency to cripple player agency in favour of "cinematic" storytelling, but the way in which he expressed them was often abrasive and he too copped a perma after a few seemingly back-to-back temporary bans.

Who cares? Grow thicker skin etc. I agree with Dennis, stuff like this makes those boards worse. The mods dont moderate, they're actively ubermensching the community into what they want it to be, an echo chamber for their hug box feels booth. The weird part is, to me it looks like EviLore is against it for the most part.

I tend to forget that NeoGAF skews very young. Mods included.

Yeah EviLore seems a lot more personally laid back about a lot of stuff and kinda middle of the road but he does let the moderation go in another direction.......

I seem to recall maybe a year or something ago there was some pushback against the very uberprogressive no-tolerance stance towards dissenting voices the board was starting to acquire but that seems to have been reversed.

How are we defining "very young"? Of the people whose ages I know, I think most are in their mid-late 20s at the youngest. I'm 30 and kind of feel like that's about the median. Mind you, I don't have a spreadsheet of mod birthdays, so I pulled that median stuff out of my ass.

It is a great game though. Maybe a little overrated gameplay-wise but the story and graphics are top notch.

Eh. The news about Hito had me thinking back how long I've been around that community, and I remembered that I'd been at least reading GAF since 2000. I was sixteen then. I'm thirty now, and that makes me feel ancient. For a message board about video games, I don't really feel like late 20s constitutes being young. But that's just me. Obviously, I'm not the arbiter of designating what the average age for a video game message board should be.

I'm expecting some debate over whether or not higher-res textures and 1080p60 constitutes enough of a "significant upgrade" for the game to be considered as a candidate for this year's GAF GOTY voting. I mean, the game is literally titled "The Last of Us Remastered, but even so I'm sure there's bound to some disagreement when it's announced that the game doesn't qualify.

Personally, I don't think I'll be voting for anything unless I finally finish South Park/Wolf14 or AssCreed Unity is a significant improvement.

Don't appreciate you talking about Duckroll, Charlequin, Aeana, y2kev, or even Crushed like this. Even Kagari doesn't act "like a five year old". Sure, Duck hasn't always had perfecto moments but when you mod a forum that big there are going to be mistakes. But saying Duck is childish...comes off as, well, childish. The only child-like staff member I've seen is Bishop, who uses bans as a means to quell discussion in a very child like way.

You wanna know childish? Buddyc banning me for bumping a month old thread. Amir0x trolling me and harassing me on and off gaf (in irc) because I didn't like Okami.
