It's not inherently unrelated. People come up with all sorts of justifications for why our troops join up or what even their goal is. I know plenty of vets who have told me they fully do not like what America is doing, especially to its own people, after risking their lives, losing friends and comrades, going through so much strife after being told to sign up on a lie based around helping American's retain their freedom. Not saying you're one of those people who signed up for that reason, but it seems to be a semi-common contingent of vets that view America doing this to its citizens after all the sacrifices they've made and lies they've been told is infuriating.
Using war torture tactics on American prisoners, giving military supplies to police departments, black sites. All of it is a part of what you defined above as an extension of the global War on Terror's legacy. Most of the people I know who are the most fervently against all of these things happen to be vets.
