So, how's KoF15?

I usually buy fighters I like day 1 even though I hardly play them anymore (I bought GG Strive Season Pass, but I haven't even tried any of the DLC fighters yet). With Horizon 2 / Elden Ring / GT7 / Strangers in Paradise coming up I don't see myself even putting a couple hours in any time soon so I think I'm gonna wait for a 50% sale, especially since I'm gonna want the DLC fighter teams. Not feeling spending $85+ right now for a game I won't play much.

Also I think I'm a little burned on KoF14. Like it was totally fine KoF, but I just got bored pretty quick and this is like iterative sequel to that. I feel like the last KoF I was super into was 2002, with 98 still being the best.

I'm addicted to it!  Other fighters have fizzled out for me fast as of late, but this one has me glued to the screen and losing track of time, lol.

Impressions from a few days ago:
The King Of Fighters XV (PS5)- This is the first time I've spent any real amount of time playing a game on the PS5 since I got one last year...and it's playing an "uprezzed PS4 game" that apparently has less input lag when played on PS4, similar to Guilty Gear Strive.  But the game looks nice and plays well with the stock PS5 pad, load times are short (much shorter compared to Samurai Shodown 2019), and online matches have been pretty great so far- the game uses rollback netcode and it shows.  Even a 1-bar connection match I had felt fine.  Didn't have any trouble getting matches and hopefully that's a good sign, since the game isn't officially out yet (the digital deluxe version unlocked a few days early on consoles).  encountered some crazy-good people online and got destroyed, but it was impressive seeing what people have already learned.  I like the way a lot of the characters play and it's making it tough to choose a team to stick with!

It's out on PC and I double dipped.  It's great on Steam except for lack of 1440P support.  My monitor lets me downscale from 4K, though, and it looks great.

I'm excited to dive into KOF but they really shouldn't have released it the week before Elden Ring. Feels like SNK can't help but shoot themselves in the foot sometimes.

I haven't tried the online play yet, but if it's solid that means this is the best KOF game at release by default IMO.

Getting KOF tonite. Been trying to make it a point to play more fighters this year, and so far it seems to be working. My friend bought me SFV so we've been playing that a lot, though I can't really get into it. Doesn't feel as fun to play as IV was.

I also played a bit of Chaos Code at Round 1. Pretty fun 2D fighter, too bad it doesn't look like this got a physical release. Any opinions on that one?

If this helps, the online population on Steam has been pretty strong out of the gate- whether it stays that way or not is another story.  It also feels a tad bit more responsive online (lines up with reports that input lag on PS5 is worse than on PS4) on Steam and it plays a helluva lot better with a Hori fightpad compared to that PS5 pad.

But it's still great on PS5 and I think the load times are a bit faster on there.

Pretty fun and the PS4 and PC versions have online, but nobody ever played it.  It got a Switch release but that had no online.  Port is solid though if you don't care about that.

It was supposed to get a sequel, but development stopped after one of the two brothers developing it passed away. The other brother took a break but I'm not sure if he's ever going to continue on with it.

I saw that KoF15 on Steam, while having the most players ever for KoF at 8,000 players is still less than even Melty Blood at 13,000 players.

KoF lives on its international audience. It's probably the only major fighting game series in the USA that is even smaller than Virtua Fighter. Not sure why SNK fighters in general never took off here. In the 90s the Neo Geo machines were in every bowling alley along with SF & MK machines.

I used to play KoF 94-96 at Disneyland in the arcade next to space mountain. They had a ton of KoF machines at the time.

Also I'm probably gonna grab this over the weekend. People seem pretty high on it and I need a break from open-world stuff (plus H2 is too buggy right now). Gonna get it on PS4/PS5 because I play at such a casual level I don't really care about input lag and just wanna play on my couch with no effort. Although that d-pad still sucks. What's the best PS5 working control with a good d-pad for fighters these days?

That's the all-time peak.  Right now there's 112 people on Melty Blood versus 5,700+ on KOF.  Hopefully it will stay popular.

What's the best PS5 working control with a good d-pad for fighters these days?

I don't think there is anything yet until Hori releases a pad.

I'm not usually too negative on reveal trailers or announcement stuff, but that's just awful. What Capcom showed us was the beginning of a Street Fighter yaoi porno, not a reveal or taste of the most popular and iconic fighting game on the planet.

It's also really disheartening that Luke is getting the spotlight when his design and vibe is American MMA fighter.

Capcom has excelled at so much this past gen, but fighting games from them are still fucked. SFV isn't a bad game, but it did not have the same weight or fandom of IV or II.

It's just a teaser and possibly not indicative of what the final game will even look like.  Gotta wait until Summer.  Just nice to see it finally being made official.

Capcom has excelled at so much this past gen, but fighting games from them are still fucked. SFV isn't a bad game, but it did not have the same weight or fandom of IV or II.

SFV actually ended up becoming the second best-selling Street Fighter game of all time, behind SF2 on SNES, and it's catching up to it with 6.10 million units sold (SF2 is at 6.30).  The game is in Capcom's top 10 "platinum sales" list.

Reminds me of how well NRS fighters sell, but how tepid and deflated the competitive scene is for those games.  :doge

I guess my frustration comes from how there hadn't been solid momentum for Street Fighter.

Compare this reveal to something like a character reveal for Smash Bros. It's like comparing a fan made rule 34 porn video versus a professional production with thought and care put into it.

Compared to stuff like Smash, Tekken, shooters in general? Absolutely. Capcom pro tour probably does similar numbers to one moderately popular Warzone or Fortnite streamer.

Regardless of SFV, my points about how shitty this reveal is, stands. You don't do a 7 day countdown, give info to random insiders, and build hype up, for a 30 second teaser with no gameplay and including the most boring newcomer in Street Fighter history.

"I don't like the logo."

OK.

There's not much to really talk about here.  It could have been a better reveal but I guess they weren't ready for that yet. So let's see how it is in the summer.

Compared to stuff like Smash, Tekken, shooters in general? Absolutely. Capcom pro tour probably does similar numbers to one moderately popular Warzone or Fortnite streamer.

Shooters are way more popular than all these games combined and I'm not sure why you're even mentioning them.  SFV has almost always been the top "main stage" game of multiple fighting game events and its popularity was clearly there.  I think it has waned recently, but it's like seven years old now and the pandemic has affected these events too.

Admittedly this announcement wasn't for me.

Personally this was the most yawn worthy announcement Capcom could have made.

SF5 apparently got better over time but the idea of going through that again is yawn worthy.

The new graphical style looks pretty yawn worthy.

Being a PS5+PC exclusive because Capcom’s cheap/greedy AF again is yawn worthy.

And I just find SF kinda boring overall.

Street Fighter as a brand has been in a weird place since IV. The games are good, but as SF4 blew up they basically changed focus to this GAAS e-sport thing. Which is fine, but stuff like the new logo just feels going further away from old-school SF to e-sport legit fighter.

The whole SFV was catered to esports community which is primarily western. Yes there are esports players in Japan and Asia and South America, but the main esports scene with $$$ in it is USA.

Don't agree with that. The esports thing is worldwide and they ran CPTs in all the regions.  Street Fighter has also been "esports" for decades. Before that term was even being used. Nothing has changed. It's just gotten bigger. I would also say that Street Fighter V is easier to play than Street Fighter 4 was. More accessible.  The big change was it being more of a games as a service type of development, which for this game really just meant that we got updates that you didn't have to up and buy as a brand new game. Although cost-wise I bet it worked out to be the same in the end if not more if you were to buy what was offered.

I have a positive outlook on this game right now. We don't have anything to go by but the development staff has clearly learned a lot and they have a new producer at the helm who everybody seems to like and be confident in.

You don't think the roided out men direction that SF has gone was done to appeal more to westerners and UFC fans? It always seemed like that to me.

I've really disliked the aesthetic of SF for a while. The games are fine, but as someone whose favorite fighter was SF2/3 in the 90s, modern Street Fighter just doesn't appeal to me at all. I'd rather play SNK or Arcsys fighters.

No- and the "roided out" thing you're talking about is in those games, too.  :P  There were memes about how jacked some of the male characters look in KOF XV last week.  For example:

How a game is announced or presented matters more significantly if there is no gameplay whatsoever shown. It's not just a street Fighter thing, but Street Fighter being the most prestigious and iconic fighting game in the world, and the reveal is this cheap, cynical, and rushed?

I'm a huge fan of Street Fighter, so Capcom treating it like it's some cheap eSports cashgrab side operation versus their other games, rubs me the wrong way.

I am too- that's why I'm going to at least let them show the game before making any kind of judgments first.

None of this is going to matter in a few months' time.  If what they show of the actual game sucks, then there's a point to be made.

I think the only time capcom has gone for MMA/UFC appeal has been Sean in SF3 with his BJJ, Abel's Fedor looking ass in SF4 and now Luke in Sf5/6. But that's like one character in each of those games, the rest of SF is a mishmash of pro wrestling, manga aesthetics and martial arts movie tropes.  And luke has those crazy cartoony popeye forearms. What's mainstream about that?

The roided out look is more something I more associate with manga + wrestling than MMA/westerner appeal. MMA fighters in particular are usually pretty lean even if they're all on PEDs.

Street fighter has always had huge muscles. Even in Sf2. Even Ryu at his leanest in SFA has huge arms.

No- and the "roided out" thing you're talking about is in those games, too.  :P  There were memes about how jacked some of the male characters look in KOF XV last week.  For example:
