But this is 2016, and Trump managed to get support from people who deemed him unfit through pure emotional appeal. A lot of people waved away Trump's faults and I can see him wave away Trump's. I can see Hitchens voting for Bernie in the primary and Trump in the general. But it's a coin toss on whether he'd vote for Hillary. Probably 50/50. I'm honestly not giving it 50/50 haha. I could see Hitchens either stepping outside of the arena and disavowing anyone or reluctantly changing his mind and going Clinton. But Hitchens never fell for Trump's type of bullshit(see Palin). What you describe is people that were susceptible to it I think. Hitchens was a lot of things but he was good at identifying bullshit and their artists.
