I saw that thread about Strong women in videogames. And while I appreciate the effort and the thought, I again fall back to the thought that people are ascribing way more artful mastery to games than they actually merit. I mean all over that thread you get people being like "Why can't women be protrayed as well as white males in games?" I sorta scratch my head at this, frankly because I don't think any characters are really all that well fleshed out in videogames. The examples of women given were Lunafreya and Quiet. The first makes more sense but if you take a look at the other characters in that game, they were more caricatures than characters. Noctis at the end of the game is the same as the Noctis at the beginning. Gladio is just a pile of muscle that's quick to anger at the beginning at the end he's exactly the same, etc, etc. Really to me Lunafreya and Noct could essentially be the same character, you just spend more time with Noct. And Quiet? Come now, you really expecting characters from MGS? Even the darlings of those that say purport games as high art rank at B movie level at best. John Marsden, nothing much to his character really, it's about the "tragedy" around him. Sure, I guess its good to ask for more, but really it's a bit like writing a review on the nutritional value of different types of gum.

Milk being white supremacy is strange to me since me and my family and relatives that I know do all drink milk as far as I can recall. We're definitely not white. Don't know if I know anyone intolerant, but I guess that isn't something you can tell from a face.
Does this mean I'm an honourary Aryan? Would I be one of the Good Ones™?

In that case, I must be a shitty whitey then since I'm lactose-intolerant and don't even like the taste of dairy (outside of yogurt) :P

like EDGE, Famitsu once held out the 40/40 as this exclusive score for only a handful of games, then it started giving it away more and more

funny enough, it has the same bias for the home nation as EDGE:
Quote
As of 2016, every game but two with a perfect score are from a Japanese company, eight of them being published/developed by Nintendo, four by Square Enix, three by Sega, three by Konami and one by Capcom

even Game Informer never gave a 10 until Super Mario 64 and it was only one of three reviewers and didn't give an overall 10 until Tony Hawk 2, they even rarely gave away 9.75's, they've given them (and 9.5's) out like candy since to where they now just straight out list a 7 as an average score in their table of what scores mean

I don't think EGM ever gave out the highest score from all its reviewers until they switched just before going defunct the first time

The most trustworthy and objectively accurate scores have always been GameFan/Play's though. I think I saw GameFan give a game a 12/10 for sound once.

Oh, there's a doosy of a story behind that one. I shit you not, but Halverson was high on acid when he wrote the Cybermorph article, along with half the staff. We had just pulled a couple of all-nighters in a row, which was the norm at deadline times. Apparently, when The Enquirer came back to work the next morning, he dropped some acid in the coffee pot, which most of the crew, including Halverson, drank from. I wasn't a coffee drinker at the time so I didn't really notice anything unusual and didn't learn what was going on until George started threatening to murder Cockburn.

So, re-read that Cybermorph article now that you know he was on acid, and it'll shed new light on just why he thought it was such a great game.

my favorite gamefan story is that Halverson often wrote the reviews for multiple review "characters" :lol

edit from that second link:
Quote
The Viewpoint section was consistently dictated right into the layout for many issues. Everyone would gather around me or George and just brain dump. Several of the aliases were all Halverson -- Skid, Mr. Goo, E. Storm, sometimes Sgt. Gamer -- probably one or two more I'm forgetting... more than a few times the different Viewpoints on the same game would all be written by him.

The editor in chief of Play magazine, Dave Halverson, has some harsh words for anyone who scored Sega's Golden Axe: Beast Rider below a 7 out of 10: "Be wary. The majority of these people (can't call them critics) either didn't complete a fraction of the game, don't understand game design, or just plain suck at games." At last check, all outlets but Play have reviewed the game well below Play's 9 out of 10 — the GameRankings average is currently at 44%.
