I don't know the science of climate change well enough to want to proclaim it anything, but I've always approached the question in the view that if there are ways to improve life through a change in processes and approach then why the fuck not?
I think the one trade-off is the impact shutting down certain types of energy plants and processes can have on a town. It's not just the loss of jobs at say a coal mining plant, but the loss of connected businesses, and the impact on local private businesses that depend on an employed neighborhood. You don't get just one ghost town, but ghost towns in the connected town businesses, such as railyards and rail factories that entirely depend on shipping goods like coal.
You can't just give all those people the finger, so if you're putting in changes then you also have to put in new opportunities for those people. And don't say stupid shit like call centers, that can be easily exported or made pointless by software.
