I don't think it should be all that controversial to suggest that GTA didn't exactly blow up until the third one which was based entirely around murdering hookers for higher scores*. Essentially a 3D Custers Revenge as the gaming press of the time excitedly described it.

The problem isn't that it argues this.
The problem is that it goes from adventure games and PC fps to GTAIII. It completely ignores console games while talking about how games "were". Only to jump in to GTAIII, ignoring entire decades worth of game advertising and software.
Also, I would agree III was when the series took off. But people still played GTA before III. I played 1 on Mupepe's computer in fact in 2000 or something. People lent out the ps version of GTA quite frequently.
Another problem is that it mentions like two women in the industry - and "others" of course - as examples that it was higher brow and more inclusive, in an industry that had Cammy and Mai and Game
boy.
Games were so high brow and intelligent back then guys.
Beware, the two titles above are casual niche games.
