For once, for just a second, I was actually hoping they restarted development for it to be a Switch 2 launch title...  But fuck that.  The Switch needs more Metroids and Zeldas.  Enough pokemans, farming sims and anime fodder.  Give us what you were born for, Nintendo.

And for hype's sake... Bring it like you did BOTW here....

You’d think after 6 years, ports wouldn’t be more than 75% of the content of a Nintendo direct.

Lots of cool remasters and re-releases. Nothing I’m into but cool for others.

Zelda keeps looking like there’s a hook they’re hinting at and hiding. What’s shown is more BOTW, and that’s great, but it’s a six year gap. It’s got that quick turn around Majora’s Mask vibe. Just not so quick.

Six years into a systems' life that's exactly that I'd expect 75% of the lineup to be...

Actually, 25% new content 6 years into a systems' life is probably way higher than average. But I'm not young and nerdy enough anymore to check. :nintendo

I think it's just more BOTW, a sequel to the Switch most iconic game much like Super Mario Galaxy 2 was for the Wii. Just a whole bunch of crazy ideas that didn't fit into the original game. Like Link driving a car and flying a helicopter.

It'll be an absolute banger for sure but some folks will be dissapointed that this is just more BOTW.
Since Nintendo is holding their cards close their chest I don't think this is the new 'mainline' Zelda either but something in between BOTW and the next 'big' next-gen Zelda that they're working on.
As for the quick turn around, they announced it E3 2019 with a 2022 release but delayed it because of the pandemic.

Citation needed.

Even PS4 is still getting new games even though it’s replacement has been out for 2 years. Usually six years in is when developers are releasing games that stretch the capabilities of current gen and show why a new one is needed.

Nintendo has been a shell of itself since Iwata’s death and they’ll continue to stagnate until the old guard (Furukawa, Miyamoto, Aonuma) gets forced out or retires. Just look at EAD output over the last decade. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_Entertainment_Planning_%26_Development

Pikmin 4 saved the Direct

- Pikmin 4 hype
- Baten Kaitos being rescued from Gamecube is cool, the port seems lazy and barebones, no rush to get it right now
  - Baten Kaitos being only on Switch is wack
- Etrian Collection is a scam, why the fuck do they shit out Persona EVERYWHERE but leave Etrian on Switch and Steam? OK Scam
  - Only the DS versions (depending who you ask this is a good thing)
- Ghost Trick iOS port
  - Also coming to Xbox at least
  - Why the fuck is Ghost Trick coming to Xbox and not MMBN? Again these companies are dumb as fucking shit, what the fuck
- Metroid Prime 4 still vaporware, they really spent energy on yet another version of Metroid Prime 1
- Zelda is Zelda, gonna run at 20fps
- GB and GBA are cool, but lol having to pay for access
  - Alone in the Dark is the biggest gigabrain decision ever

Did I miss anything else worth mentioning? Probably not. Seemed the rest was third party, or ports/remasters

I'll just play the entire trilogy uprezzed to 1080p on my Wii U.  :lol  Thanks, but no thanks Nintender. :heyman

I'm gonna be honest... TOKT looks great... but I couldn't help but feel like it's just a giant DLC.  Wasn't getting full blown sequel vibes.  And lol @being $70 now.

Oh, and We :heart Katamari... The weakest of the original three, but still better than nothing.

Edit:  Oh... well, that does look better.  (MP)  Noice.   Please tell me this will run at 60fps. :doge

Coming out of bore retirement to remind everyone here that the average age of a poster around here is bordering 40 or over 40.

All the endless bitching about ports or remasters is moot to people that don't have consoles from 20 years ago. Nor do more casual people want to fuck around with an emulator for two hours to make Metroid Prime playable.

Furthermore:

Hold on. It's just MP1, not the trilogy?

 :lol :lol :lol

You're the resident PS5 owner, at least Nintendo is offering a 2002 game with better visuals for $40, rather than taking a 2013 game that looks fine as is, and asking for $70. Suck my short chubby you fucking dong. Metroid Prime 1 will probably be better than any Dadstation 5 exclusive this year to boot.

Yeah this direct was useless for my tastes. Was hyped for Zelda and Pikmin already. Just a ton of remaster ports of great games I don’t need to replay.

If Prime was the whole trilogy I might have picked it up and replayed it. $40 for an old ass GC game is pass.

Might replay Baten Kaitos someday. Not sure if the combat holds up tbh. It had issues at the time.
Etrian is pointless if you have them on DS/3DS. Better suited for that platform.

The released the Shin Chan spinoff of that series in the west last year. There should be an audience for it as well with the "cozy game" subgenre picking up in speed.

You’d think after 6 years, ports wouldn’t be more than 75% of the content of a Nintendo direct.

That's the console, it took you that long to realize? :idont Its main success was to built an ecosystem running on manbaby nostalgia and ripping off casuals/children with low effort ports and ROM dumps. When its idiot fanbase bought a subpar port of Street Fighter 2 for almost full price early on, it probably clicked for most publishers. While all the praise for the machine's supposed amazing original content still mostly boils down to launch year games when I look around online discourse.

Anyway, I'll also give credit where it's due and say that within this context 40 bucks for Metroid is fair enough. The graphical jump relative to its prior hardware feels about as big as Dead Space and that shit is full priced. Admittedly, both seem to be on the level of Black Mesa, which is 20 bucks, so 40 still isn't great - but better than many other offerings these days.

MP Trilogy still had plenty of tweaks done to it; polished up glitches, faster loading, added 16:9 for Prime and Echoes, along with Wiimote support...  And it was all 3 for $50 at launch.

Mass Effect trilogy:DE also.. 3 for the price of one.  $40 is a bit harder to swallow when compared to those.

:rogan

Other consoles get the whole catalogue of 3rd party games, instead of just the old remasters. "But exclusives" in this context is such an anachronistic "Sega vs Nintendo" way of thinking; grow up. 2023 shaping up to be the best gaming year since 2017 and in both cases, Switch will only play a little role outside of Zelda. The latter's exlusivity won't change that I'll barely turn on my Switch for new games this year.

Mass Effect trilogy:DE also.. 3 for the price of one.  $40 is a bit harder to swallow when compared to those.
MP Trilogy suffered a lot of cuts compared to the original GameCube version though.
They removed a lot of VFX, physics and other effects especially in Prime 1. In Prime Remastered they restored all those effects and improved everything from geometry to lighting.

Compared to Mass Effect Trilogy... well I liked the effort put into the Legendary Edition but most work went into Mass Effect 1. Mass Effect 2 and 3 were basically just upressed ports. Lot's of AI upscaling done too.
Still a great remastering effort but Metroid Prime Remastered is on another level. Especially compared to something like Twilight Princess HD.

What's even crazier is that they went back to make it look more like the original 'vision' presented back in 2000 as a dark and moody realistic Alien-like game.
In that sense I hope that MP4 is a sort of soft reboot following the original and they ditch Metroid Prime 2 + 3 which took the series in a different more steampunk direction.

Just last weekend, I introduced my GF to Mario Kart Super Circuit via a Gamecube +GBPlayer connected to a 65 inch 4k TV using composite cables.

She said it was making her sick and couldnt finish a race. Unfortunately the GBPlayer has no "make the image much smaller" option, and I am not a millionaire so I dont have component cables.

I am curious if the Switch version has the same issue

:O

I don't see why this vomit inducing pixel mess blown up to 4k on a 65 inch display would make her sick  ???

In that sense I hope that MP4 is a sort of soft reboot following the original and they ditch Metroid Prime 2 + 3 which took the series in a different more steampunk direction.
I'd be ok with this.  It'd just be weird they're making it straight up MP4.  Not that they should pull a Metroid Prime (2025) thing, but normies will be asking what's up with 2 and 3.
