Just a reminder:

Flynn pleaded guilty. Papadopolous pleaded guilty. Gates pleaded guilty. Manafort is in jail awaiting trial. Cohen might be indicted very soon.

The conservative movement has basically turned into a league of evil with a single unified goal: "let's own the libs lol"
'Fiscal conservatives' running up deficits.
Trade barriers and protectionism.
Realpolitik vs. intervention.

https://twitter.com/thehill/status/1007765956561719302

Which is also why it has been hard for liberals/progressives to mount a successful defense.
As the conservatives don't seem to care about any long term consequences anymore but just the 'win' of the day.
And a win basically constitutes anything a liberal/progressive doesn't like.

Also Manafort's kids are in their 30's and aren't being sent to a detention center themselves.

But otherwise, Pizzagate Jack totally nailed the libs.

Reagan blew up the deficit with tax cuts and hardly cut spending at all, and is basically a saint in the GOP canon. Bill Clinton raised taxes and cut spending to close the deficit, they hated him. GWB jacked up both spending and blew the deficit wide open again, and he was a hero to them until he nominated Harriet Miers and the bottom fell out of the stock market. Obama insisted on making the ACA deficit neutral and Congress adopted PAYGO, and there were literal street demonstrations about "the deficit." Trump signed a big tax cut and a budget which increase the deficit, and they eat it up.

Trump has the effect of making all the hypocrisy that much more blatant, but this is all a long time coming.

Get ready for the next wave of fiscal conservatives to enter congress in 2022 arguing the party has lost its way, promising to reign in the fiscal irreresponsibility of President Biden.  :doge

The Democrats simply won't get any coverage on TV much like how Sanders was ignored, Trump and his circus will see to it that they don't get any screen time.
"Joe Biden announces he's running for..."
"Sorry to interrupt Jake, Rudy Giuliani just dropped down his pants in front of Melania on the White House lawn and passed out."

"The Democratic platform stands for equality, freedom and a better cha..."
"We come to you live from the White House where President Trump just announced that Kanye West is his new running mate."

Quote
According to the results, 19 percent of Republicans indicated they had a favorable view of Kim with 68 percent saying they had an unfavorable view (12 percent of voters overall had a favorable view of Kim, compared to 75 percent who viewed him unfavorably). That compared slightly better than the perception of Pelosi, who had a 17 percent favorable, 72 percent unfavorable rating among self-identified Republicans.

Presidents don't control spending, Congress does.

Reagan had a historically-strong Democrat Senate/House to deal with. He was more than eager to work with them to get his agenda done. Clinton had the 'Contract for America" Republican House to deal with and wasn't afraid to make deals with them.

There's a lot of nuance in these discussions also. Reagan had huge tax cuts in his first budget, but rescinded most of them the following year. Clinton corrected some of the Reagan tax cuts in his early years, but later agreed (when pressured by Republicans) to further cut capital gains taxes.

If there's anything those dweebs who were marching in tri-corner hats in 2009 care about, it's nuance.

Republicans don't care about deficits.  They care about domestic government spending, because they believe such spending is going to the wrong people for the wrong reasons.

No one cares about deficits. It's just lip service to get your base agitated when you are out of power. Because the average American is so dumb they think the government operates like a household.

But...Obama made a deal to keep Iran from nuclearizing, which made war with them less likely, and then Trump unilaterally tore up the agreement, which made war with them more likely...

Pretty much but I don't think that's 100% right.  People do care about deficits (because they're dumb and think the gov't budget should be like a household budget) but they only care to the extent they believe the deficit is being driven by something they don't like.  It's like how I get irked when my wife spends $50 on a dinner with her friends but I will happily blow $50 on beer.

Deficits only matter during downturns when you're forced to cut funding to critical programs to compensate.

Tired: Cutting programs during downturns of the economy
Wired: Cutting programs during prosperous times to hamstring ourselves during the lean moments.

There is certainly a testing of that old “what if” I always heard: could Nixon have survived with a Fox News?

If the Bush admin didn’t already make a strong case for it, Trump certainly is testing it far more directly.

It’s an often overused phrase, but if nothing else Trump has proven that he and Fox News and the rest of the right-wing media can pretty successfully normalize and rally support/anger for basically anything they want over time(within reason). Like I am not going to be the least bit surprisied if Trump’s doubling down on migrant internment camps doesn’t eventually reach majority support with his party and I start seeing resuscitated arguments centered around Michelle Malkin talking points all over social media like it’s 2004 again.

The budgets that the Reagan administration submitted to Congress called for ~$16 billion more in spending than the final budgets passed by Congress, and he didn't "rescind most" of the '81 cuts. They kept the cuts for the top bracket (and lowered it even more in the second term), and one of the main tax hikes was FICA for Social Security, which just happens to be regressive.

Clinton's main deficit reduction was the '93 omnibus when Dems had control of both houses of Congress, and required Al Gore to cast a tiebreaking vote in the Senate because there was no GOP support.

Sorry, buddy.

Agreed. It’s not often that the news affects me so viscerally. 90% of what I write is low effort shit posts filled with dumb jokes or arguing positions I only sort of agree with, but I can’t even joke in the slightest way about thI s kid news.

It’s incredibly heart wrenching. The other piece of news I saw lately was Otto Warmbiers parents talking about how their son came back home deaf, blind, obviously tortured and screaming. And trump praises Kim Jong Un. The administration is  just grotesque.

It’s truly beyond the pale.
