I agree and that's why, despite the mockery it received, I think the native american thing was really smart on Warren's part. It was going to be an issue eventually, and so it's better to just get it over with now. If people bring it up later, she already has a response, and people will be tired of it by then. And if she hadn't done this, this could have been some week-long media issue much later and really sink her.

Yeah. She could've definitely handled it better (if you're running a Democratic primary addressing an issue that relates to a minority group, REACH OUT TO THAT MINORITY GROUP FIRST), but it's the difference between Trump constantly calling her Pocahontas and Trump constantly calling her Pocahontas while the media runs headlines about her "continuing to dodge the issue" or whatever.

Of course this whole thing is a line of attack because lots of white people believe that nonwhite people have a huge advantage in academia and employment. Heard way too many 40+ year olds (who aren't even #MAGA or obviously foaming at the mouth) say something like "of course it would be hard for them to fire [coworker] cause he's black" or "his kid got into [state college], which is impressive cause they save most of the slots for affirmative action these days."

I don't think she could have handled it better because her charisma is worse than Hillary's.

Her best bet is probably the Bernie strategy. Don't try to appeal to people, just be authentic and sincere and that will be what appeals to people.

The problem with that is reaching out to native american groups still looks like trying to join the club. The fact is, "I have native american ancestry" is still a lie. Those heritage tests are notoriously unreliable. "1%" is much smaller than the margin of error for those things. Genealogical proof or bust.

But most people won't realize that which is why the test was a good idea. She has an alibi.
