Recanvass doesn’t necessarily hurt Bernie

A) It hurts in the sense that he's already won. B) Whoever wins Iowa usually wins the nomination. People vote in part based on who they think is a strong candidate likely to win, because they don't want to waste their vote. All this fucking around and delays have hurt Bernie already. A lot of people might think "why should I vote for Bernie if DNC is trying their best to make it impossible for him to win". So a recount hurts his public perception, no-one else's.

People actually love voting for candidates who are definitely not going to win. You overestimate how up to date your average person is with polling. Any Klobuchar voters in Iowa thought they were doing something smart. Same thing goes for people who think “I’m not going to vote for Bernie because the DNC will screw him over”. Not only is that statement probably not true, but most people don’t even know about what’s going on behind the scenes. If anything, Bernie fighting the establishment makes him more appealing to some people.

I’d say this issue has already hurt Bernie as much as it could. Pete being declared the winner by MSM has already happened. Things can’t get much worse for Bernie, but they were never that bad to begin with. His numbers went up after Iowa, not down.

10 unread pages.

Someone give me the bullet points of the latest shenanigans please.

- Very laborious tallying of the votes in the Iowa Caucus. Buttigieg and Sanders almost at a tie.
- Numerous clerical errors noted by media analysts in the results.
- At 98% of the tally, the satellite caucuses (for Iowans out of state) results were added. Sanders basically swept those because he was the only campaign on the ball (and he negotiated their inclusion after 2016 IIRC).
- The very small gap started narrowing with Sanders fairly likely to come on top ultimately.
- DNC chairman decides it's the good moment to tweet "Enough is enough" and demand a recount.

Also :
- Romney voted to convict on one of the two counts of impeachment.
- Pelosi teared up Trump's speech after the State of the Union.
- Trump had a rambling speech on how he was COMPLETELY VINDICATED.

Isn't this the sort of thing the FEC should be looking at, I like that we're at a time where it's not even mentioned that it's being looked into.  : (

to add: dnc chairman specifically called for the iowa democratic party to recanvass because of a dispute about how exactly sde’s were being calculated from the satellite caucuses. according to bloomberg (like, the media outlet) he did this after prodding on the part of the buttigieg campaign. apparently there’s some weird discrepancy in the manual about the arcane calculation it specifies for satellite caucuses.

then the IDP released a statement saying they’ll rencanvass if they get directly asked by a campaign. and bernie said he won the popular vote and thats all that really matters.

This from Matt "DUI" Gaetz, who during the House impeachment debate didn't think any of Trump's very real offenses were unseemly or warranted any kind of censure, and who is obviously fine with Trump's plethora of lies during the State of the Union speech.

As can be seen by the reaction by the party of traitors, Pelosi did well.

Not sure what was the best part of Trump's speech.
Trump re-enacting the Scalise shooting or the Peter/Lisa love story.

In any case this version of Trump, praising people, talking in a soft voice and finishing sentences is very dangerous for the Democrats.

Jackson's 1988 run has been largely memory-holed. He wasn't even one of the subjects in What It Takes when he did way better than Biden or Gary Hart. It's too bad, feels like it would be pretty relevant to a lot of the conversations people have been having the last few years.

Jackson's run definitely fell through my memory hole.  Honestly the one time I recall hearing about it is an 8th grade teacher in 2000 telling us that she supported Jackson's bid.  Recently I've heard some Bernie supporters talk about it on podcasts.

Even in 2008 I barely recall hearing about it.

I'm not proud of my ignorance about it.

I guess part of it is that normal people just don't think about failed primary runs that much, but also Obama and the new era of crossover black politicians like Booker/Harris/Patrick made the previous era of OG civil rights organizers and black urban politicians seem like a bit of a relic. Plus Jackson's run could be seen as the last stand of the progressive wing of the party before two decades of DLC-style moderation.

But that 1988 campaign is really fascinating! He won two or three times as many white voters as he did in '84, was endorsed by Bernie, Paul Wellstone, and Fritz Hollings (one of the former segregationists that Biden was talking about earlier this campaign), and won several states. His campaign also really actively went after rural white voters but didn't actually get many to support him (Jesse Jackson read Settlers).
