Much like everything that ever happens in the entire history of everything, it was a combination of factors.  The letter, Hilary's lack of charisma, Trump's name recognition, the ACA premium news, her terrible campaign in the Midwest, etc.

TL;DR: Bad campaign made worse by stupid FBI action

Two of the big holdouts in the House switched their votes because of an amendment that's going to drop $8 billion into the high-risk insurance pool over the next 5 years, except that those pools are expected to cost $20-$30 billion per year. :snoop

It's literally idiotic policy that is inexcusable and more expansive then *gasp* allowing people with pre-existing conditions to purchase insurance within exchanges alongside younger/healthier people in order to spread costs and blah blah blah fuck these guys.

I don't think it'll pass. The bill hasn't even been revealed to the public, and the moderates know the senate will simply rewrite it. Are they really gonna kill themselves for nothing?

I was wondering why I couldn't find a copy earlier.

Fucking degenerates honestly.

Though the fact 8 billion for a 30 billion dollar program was enough to satisfy the delusional feeling of cover for some moderates to vote for this speaks to how fucking awful the moderate wing really is.

I hate the Freedom Caucus and all, but at least they stand for something other then tax cuts for the wealthy. The moderate wing really is just a bunch of parasitic organisms that do what ever they can to maintain survival in order to help rich people. There are no real principles on domestic policy or real concern for the constituents.

There is a tiny bit of me that feels like "fuck it, lets try accelerationism." :yeshrug

People voted for this shit, let them see what it actually looks like. Clean up in 2018 and step over the smoldering body of the GOP's credibility on health policy in 2020 and get reform that is far better then anyone could of hoped under Democratic control through that same time period.

It's risky, but this bill is so bad, so very fucking bad. And the fact it shifts the harm disproportionately toward GOP demographic strongholds is a level of political idiocy I have never experienced.

40% of Trump voters supporting single-payer back in early April seems like it would be the low point if this passed.

Then I remember people will literally die because of this shit.

I think it has a 50/50 chance of passing. I just don't see how either outcome doesn't hurt the GOP. They pretty much backed themselves into a corner with this awful bill.

And honestly I just don't know why they didn't take the L and move on. The funding comrpomise showed they clearly aren't scared of ignoring Trump.

Shit went down so fast that they could move on to taxes or any number of things and by 2018 just stop talking about healthcare hoping the economy is still picking up and role on that.

Now they just keep dragging it along and reminding people how fucking awful and incompetent they are. And on the off chance they end up passing something, then they have to actually live with it.

if this passes, and it could, would McConnell blow up the legislative filibuster to pass it?

I mean, he can, and I kind of expect him to do just that eventually (but even then he might only be a vote or two shy). But for this shitburger? I'm hoping cooler heads will prevail.

But that of course would put all the GOP Senators against Trump, and they're clearly more scared of him or at least his awful base then they are of anything else. Crap. This could get really bad.

I believe they're trying to get the bill through the Senate with the budget reconciliation process, which would only require 50 votes.

Yep.

That is why the bill is designed the way it is. It has to deal directly with the budget.

And to be frank, there is a good chance that even if they get it past the senate, the whole 30% insurer surcharge for lapsed coverage will not pass the parliamentarian for reconciliation and that will force Republicans to go the Ted Cruz route, and further erode Senate norms by ignoring that ruling, or it gets kicked back out and without that clause, the bill becomes really untenable.

Hrmmmm....I'm all for the ACA but it seems a bit disingenuous to only show 2 years (immediately following the financial crisis) and then claim it's because the ACA. Show a much longer timeframe then draw conclusions.

So, outside of a sharp drop-off following a record year, the number of bankruptcies had been steadily climbing since 1980 and only started trending downward after the ACA was passed.

Probably added to the previous year being a record year, everybody on the edge getting in their bankruptcy before the law changed. Still, following that massive drop-off, the yearly number started climbing back towards the old trend line up until the ACA passed.
