You have a very simple version of everyone else and more complex version of yourself. We're all fucked up and complex. Give other people that credit.

Islamism isn't a racial demographic. It's an ideology. It can spread by the changing of a mind.
At their core most people vote based on group identity, emotional activation, and subconscious cues. You seem to have a far too idealistic view of human democratic behavior.

I wouldn't say that process is a simple one, it seems to be pretty complex(at least biologically), but I would say that more often then we should, we mis-interpret and confuse confirmation bias with a process of rational critical thinking. Or seek to explain highly irrational processes with too much deference  to rationality.

And to bridge that with fears of radical Islamic conversion, there is so little influential power of that ideology in this country - a country that is trending toward agnosticism more then anything - that the level of focus on that particular issue defies reason. Which falls in line with what I just said.

Also, how the fuck does this woman still have a job in Maine? She is the perfect model of the caricature of an empty rhetorical moderate that underneath it is just a spineless party loyalist?
People love that kind of thing. Crash enough planes on top of it and you get to run for President. Don't even have to do that if you want to be talked about constantly as a strong Vice President or cabinet posting.

Quote
Not since Watergate has a president dismissed the person leading an investigation bearing on him
Quote
Mr. Trump made a point of noting that Mr. Comey had three times told the president that he was not under investigation. But Mr. Comey had said publicly that the bureau was investigating Russia’s meddling in last year’s presidential election and whether any associates of Mr. Trump’s campaign were coordinating with Moscow. [emphasis added]
So was the investigation bearing on him or Russia's meddling and campaign associates?

Cox was the person specifically in charge of investigating Watergate.

Firing the FBI Director doesn't make the FBI stop all investigations and wait. It already has an acting one in Andrew McCabe.
Quote
During his wife Jill McCabe's 2015 Senate campaign, she received donations amounting to more than $675,000 from Terry McAuliffe's political organization and the Democratic Party of Virginia.

Maybe is time to do a better job about it than "who knows". Something similar happens in Mexico too and believe, is not going to get better by let tribialism just get by unchecked.

For sure.

I mean if I had to pick some starting points, start with rhetoric and policy IMO.

Republicans decry that Democrat's seek wins by hooking people on government benefits and handouts, like a drug dealer. Wish that were more true these days. Republicans probably have the stronger case on that with the well of tax cuts they go to...

For instance I would argue the legacy of the ACA would of been much less tenuous and negative for so long had Democrats just done the wise thing and not played into the hands of conservative strategy. Which would mean ignoring the manufactured hysteria over 'costs' that Democrats convinced themselves was more important to their long-term popularity then what better maximizing subsidies and funding for aspects of the bill that would of kept consumer costs lower.

Similar issue with the stimulus.

BUT HE'S BUSY WITH THAT FUCKING RUSSIAN INVESTIGATION

AND WE WANT HIM TO FINISH THAT INVESTIGATION SO TRUMP CAN GET HIS ASS LOCKED UP IN JAIL YOU STUPID MUTHAFUCKAAAA!!!!!!!!!
James Comey is not the entire FBI:
Quote from: back in march
The FBI is planning to create a special section based at its Washington headquarters to co-ordinate its investigation of Russian activities designed to influence the 2016 presidential election, according to a person familiar with the plan.
...
Creation of the temporary unit mirrors the bureau’s approach to other sensitive investigations, including the WikiLeaks disclosure of classified US government documents and Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server while secretary of state.

The FBI generally prefers to run investigations from one of its 56 field offices, but the high-profile nature of the sprawling Russia inquiry is seen as requiring a central manager, according to current and former officials.
...
The bureau is expected to recall from the field an FBI counter-intelligence specialist to oversee the squad, which is to begin work next month. If the new team — with about 20 dedicated agents drawn from across the country — operates as similar units have in the past, its chief would brief Mr Comey on a weekly basis while providing daily updates for deputy director Andrew McCabe.

“We did it quite regularly,” said Robert Anderson of Navigant, a business consulting group, who was a former executive assistant director of the FBI. “Any time there’s a big case, a giant case, it becomes a huge resource drain across the organisation.”

Trump personally hasn't been under investigation. It's his transition team and associates that have been under the investigation. Trump putting the line about how totally super innocent he is in what is, in theory, a private letter because he thought it would make it look like he wasn't firing JC for the Russia investigation is loooooooooooooooooooooooooooolz as hell. That's some shit a 7 year old would come up with and think it works. All he did was draw EXTRA attention to the topic and made himself look even more guilty. For literally no reason at all other than he's a manchild.

President Donald Trump weighed firing his FBI director for more than a week. When he finally pulled the trigger Tuesday afternoon, he didn't call James Comey. He sent his longtime private security guard to deliver the termination letter in a manila folder to FBI headquarters.

He had grown enraged by the Russia investigation, two advisers said, frustrated by his inability to control the mushrooming narrative around Russia. He repeatedly asked aides why the Russia investigation wouldn’t disappear and demanded they speak out for him. He would sometimes scream at television clips about the probe, one adviser said.

...

Trump had grown angry with the Russia investigation — particularly Comey admitting in front of the Senate that the FBI was investigating his campaign — and that the FBI director wouldn't support his claims that President Barack Obama had tapped his phones in Trump Tower.

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2017/5/5/1659292/-No-Claude-Taylor-and-company-are-not-reputable-sources-on-Trump-Russia
Quote
Taylor touts himself as a “former Clinton administration staffer.” He worked in the volunteer office in 1993 at a salary of $35,000.
Quote
Taylor’s circle jerk of retweeters includes something called Palmer Report which appears to be a left-leaning version of Infowars or Breitbart complete with promotion of unfounded rumors and wacky conspiracy theories, and the ever-present Louise Mensch, an off-the-rails British conservative prone to conspiracy theories.

Just because Comey said he was working with prosecutors does not  imply that there are grand juries impaneled, as Taylor, and now Olbermann, have claimed. None of Taylor’s “breaking news” tweets over the past two months have been substantiated by any reputable news source, and a number of them have, in fact, been debunked, including by Snopes.

Not that I'd trust a person named "Bob Johnson" who posts on the Daily Kos.

edit: Berniebro confirmed:
Quote
KJB Oregon  Druid13 May 05 · 03:00:39 PM
Because Bob’s whole world view insists that the Democratic Party is so weak and inept that we need Bernie and Elizabeth Warren to save us from ourselves.  The possibility that Russian collusion played at part in Hillary’s defeat (and yes, it’s still only a possibility) severely undermines that belief, so he’ll protest it as loudly as possible...

Real talk though, this story ticks all the boxes if you're a Democrat.

You've got:
☑ James Comey getting fired
☑ Guy that supported Trump's campaign getting bodied by Trump when he's no longer useful
☑ Trump doing shady shit out on the open, sending Trumpistas scrambling to cover ass
☑ Basic incompetence/stupidity

Short of Trump getting impeached, this is the closest thing to Schadenfreude Christmas we can hope to get.

Except that this is a consolidation of power by Trump.  If it wasn't obvious that he's Putin's bitch before, it is now.  And we have no course of action until the midterm elections – which still won't stop Trump.  Also the fact that the Census Director stepped down...

none of this gives me pleasure.  It's just all bad.

I honestly assumed the Census Director was a civil service position. Dude is resigning with one year left on his five year term. Which would have ended two years before the Census...why is it even a term limited Presidential appointment?

I found this picture on wikipedia of what I assume is still their data entry system:

I appreciate optimism, but how?

As I understand it it would have to be voted on and withstand a likely Trump veto.

Or Rod Rosenstein would have to seek one.

Neither seems very likely given the behavior of both.

Unless you mean like a 9/11 type commission and that too seems unlikely given the current behavior of both chambers Republicans in investigations now.

The silver lining is that Trump has the governing IQ of a halfwit and surrounds himself with psychophants, many that are barely more competent then him, so he and his crew are often the biggest barrier to moving forward with Trump's natural, darker inclinations.

The only thing saving them has been the GOP's capacity to put party loyalty above country and conscience.

Another part of your overall plan, the tax reform plan. Is it OK if that tax plan increases the deficit? Ronald Reagan’s tax reform didn’t.
Well, it actually did. But, but it’s called priming the pump. You know, if you don’t do that, you’re never going to bring your taxes down. Now, if we get the health-care [bill through Congress], this is why, you know a lot of people said, “Why isn’t he going with taxes first, that’s his wheelhouse?” Well, hey look, I convinced many people over the last two weeks, believe me, many Congressmen, to go with it. And they’re great people, but one of the great things about getting health care is that we will be saving, I mean anywhere from $400bn to $900bn.

Mr Mnuchin: Correct.
President Trump: That all goes into tax reduction. Tremendous savings.

But beyond that it’s OK if the tax plan increases the deficit?
It is OK, because it won’t increase it for long. You may have two years where you’ll… you understand the expression “prime the pump”?

Yes.
We have to prime the pump.

It’s very Keynesian.
We’re the highest-taxed nation in the world. Have you heard that expression before, for this particular type of an event?

Priming the pump?
Yeah, have you heard it?

Yes.
Have you heard that expression used before? Because I haven’t heard it. I mean, I just… I came up with it a couple of days ago and I thought it was good.
It’s what you have to do.

It’s…
Yeah, what you have to do is you have to put something in before you can get something out.

Have you heard that expression used before? Because I haven’t heard it. I mean, I just… I came up with it a couple of days ago and I thought it was good. It’s what you have to do.

From 2016:

Quote
And he has little patience for the organizing principle of the Tea Party: the idea that the federal government must live within its means and lower its debts. Instead, he seems to favor expensive new infrastructure spending and tax cuts as economic stimulus, much like Obama did in 2009. “Well, sometimes you have to prime the pump,” he says.

From later in 2016:

Quote
We are also going to lower our business tax rate from 35 percent all the way down to 15 percent. That’s going to be big. Going to prime the pump. Got to prime the pump. Got to get the jobs. Got 96 million people out there. We got to get them going.

And from today:

Quote
I came up with it a couple of days ago.

Trump: You know the catapult is quite important. So I said what is this? Sir, this is our digital catapult system. He said well, we’re going to this because we wanted to keep up with modern [technology]. I said you don’t use steam anymore for catapult? No sir. I said, "Ah, how is it working?" "Sir, not good. Not good. Doesn’t have the power. You know the steam is just brutal. You see that sucker going and steam’s going all over the place, there’s planes thrown in the air."

It sounded bad to me. Digital. They have digital. What is digital? And it’s very complicated, you have to be Albert Einstein to figure it out. And I said–and now they want to buy more aircraft carriers. I said what system are you going to be–"Sir, we’re staying with digital." I said no you’re not. You going to goddamned steam, the digital costs hundreds of millions of dollars more money and it’s no good.

That sounds like something that happened.

Trump on Monday during an interview with Time reacted to testimony earlier the same day by former acting Attorney General Sally Yates and former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper in a Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearing.

“Watch them start to choke like dogs,” Trump said, as quoted by Time. “Watch what happens. They are desperate for breath.”

When Clapper hesitated, according to the report, Trump said: “Ah, he’s choking. Ah, look.”

According to Time, Trump’s recordings of the Senate hearing were saved among recordings of cable news shows, which are the President’s preferred means of consuming news and have informed both his public statements and his hiring choices.

“Yes. He was choking on that,” Trump said, responding to another of Clapper’s statements before the President fast-forwarded ahead through the hearing. “This is one of the great inventions of all time—TiVo.”
