Correct.

However, I don't think letting the EU take the reigns on... reigning things in will do much good, either.

In any case I'm glad she's advancing the conversation, because I've started to consider the possibility we all just drank the Silicon Valley faux-libertarian Koolaid for 20 years and it's possible they might not have the country/world's best interests at heart. Like trying to reason that tech monopolies are fine because "people can just switch" (with about thirty asterisks.) Goes for browsers, OSes, app stores, you name it. Tech seems to be stratifying and each day that passes makes it more unlikely there will be a new competitor to the current FAANG oligopoly, especially in those company's dominant areas...

Exempting primary residences from the estate tax would decrease the number of estate tax returns; those and stocks are historically the assets that trigger a filing obligation, well at least before the current obscene exemption amount.

I'm not sure what he's on about when he says, "The government also must . . . close the loopholes that allow the very wealthy to pass on their financial portfolios to their children with no tax on capital gains." I'm guessing the stepped up basis in inherited assets? You can't tax inherited assets without stepping up their basis, it's an accounting absurdity.
in the uk, it's a fantastic way to fuck someone over after you've died with an unexpected tax bill

Quote
Buffett highlights that unemployment remains so low, yet interest rates and inflation are not rising. At the same time the U.S. government continues to spend more money than it takes in.
These conditions are not sustainable for the long term, Buffett says.
“No economics textbook I know that was written in the first couple of thousand years that discussed even the possibility that you could have this sort of situation continue and have all variables stay more or less the same,” he says.

Schmid said the region was facing a “jobs crisis” — meaning there are too many jobs here — and that SB50 threatens to crowd families out of the area with dense housing.

“If SB50 passes, Silicon Valley will be more like San Francisco. Think about it: San Francisco has the lowest ratio of 5- to 17-year-olds in the country,” Schmid said. “If you support SB50, you will be challenging the future of families in the West Bay.”

Curiously, Trump's 26th-floor office is directly across Fifth Avenue from the 19th floor of the Crown Building. That's because Trump arbitrarily numbered the upper floors in Trump Tower because the ceilings of the lower floors are higher than usual.

The republicans are swine. History won't look kindly on them.

Barr was instrumental in covering up Iran Contra. Then most of the Washington press and moderate Dems insisted he would be a good institutional steward despite history.

Reagan has been metaphorically nominated for a sliding scale of political sainthood by most people right of Bernie.

George W has 61% favorability.

Excuse me while my cynicism is getting me pretty skeptical of this long arc of history shit when it comes to Republican fuckery.

The only way for anyone to think Reagan was a good president is to either have been fed nothing but Rep propaganda their entire life or be a moron, or a combination thereof.
Even Nixon was a better president and did not cause as much lasting damage to America.

Is that so? He certainly should have been impeached for Iran-Contra, but I doubt he would have been removed from office afterwards.
Edit: I think they didn't impeach Reagan simply because he was incredibly popular at the time, and the Dems would have hurt themselves if they went after him.

I edited my reply above, Reagan was too popular to impeach.
However, there is no sensible reason not to impeach Trump right now, even if just to show future generations that some upstanding members of congress were not ok with his criminal behavior and this blatant disregard for the constitution.
