Upside down world is so weird
GOP: Russia is no threat  :smug
Democrats: Russia! Russia! Russia  :shaking

https://twitter.com/EdwardTHardy/status/1194948092291739649

Carlson is right through, there's nothing the Russians can do that will greatly upset the balance of power.

Russian interests in Syria?
They might get influence over bombed out cities and a regime already allied with them.

Russian interests in Ukraine?
Ukraine has been a Russian sattelite state for decades.
Imagine Russia getting influence over a country of which one third of the population speaks Russian.

A real danger is Russia getting a foothold in the Baltics and/or Russia's botched up coup attempts like Montenegro and killing critics and enemies abroad.

Yeah nothing to be worried about, they just hold the world's largest supply of nuclear weapons and are a constant menace to our NATO allies.

But sure, totally harmless.

Is it now?
By choice?
Did that always work out for Ukraine?

Imagine Russia getting influence over a country of which one third of the population speaks Russian.
By influence over do you mean waging war and annexation? Imagine Germany getting influence over a country (Czechoslovak Republic) of which one-quarter of the population speaks German!

What about the UK and every English-speaking country? Spain and most of Latin America. If ethnicity is also important, what right does Mexico have in relation to the US Southwest?

Yeah nothing to be worried about, they just hold the world's largest supply of nuclear weapons
They've had those since the 50's and people crazier than Putin have controlled them.

and are a constant menace to our NATO allies.
They mostly screw around in areas that they used to control only a short while ago.

But sure, totally harmless.
The point is not: "Russia is totally harmless" as no countries with geopolitical ambitions are entirely harmless.

The point is: "Russia poses no threat to the United States"

Which is true and why Mitt Romney was laughed at when he claimed otherwise.
China is currently a much bigger threat than Russia will ever be.

I can see why Russia poses a threat to Ukraine or could pose a threat to a country like Finland but what threat does Russia pose to the US?

Russian interests in Ukraine?
Ukraine has been a Russian sattelite state for decades.

Imagine if China staged a coup in Mexico. How fast would the US send in the tanks?
Ukraine is seen as Russia's backyard. The EU/US tried to 'free' it from Russia's influence for decades.
First with the Orange Revolution, which didn't turn out so well. Then with the Maidan revolution, which also didn't turn out so well.
You can't extend the reach of NATO and the EU to the border of Russia and not expect a backlash from Russia.

Imagine if China staged a coup in Mexico. How fast would the US send in the tanks?
Which country helped stage a coup in Ukraine? The United States? I'm not up on conspiracy theories.

Anyway, if Mexico's chamber voted 328–0 to schedule a presidential election after the president fled to the US after shooting hundreds of protesters at the urging of the US, then I hope the US would not send in tanks, but it's not clear with America's history in Latin America.

A sovereign country, if it so chooses, cannot become a member or an organization or political and economic union unless a third country, which is a member of neither, approves?

The parties involved knew they were playing with fire.
Just because you don't agree with Russian influence in Ukraine doesn't mean you can just pretend it doesn't exist.
The same as that you can't pretend that the most influential US diplomat yelled "FUCK THE EU" on the phone when warned about her actions undermining diplomacy and that pro-EU factions fielded Neo Nazi's do to their dirty work.

The people who set this in motion knew it was going to be messy. Yet, there was never a vote on it in any of the democracies.
"Do we want to upset Russia and the status quo and have Ukraine join us? Y/N?"

Whatever the good intentions it completely escalated. Russia cannot solely be blamed for that mess.

Ukraine would not have nuclear weapons located 90 miles from the Russian border just by becoming a member of NATO or the EU. Five countries that are both members of NATO and members of the EU already border Russia. Why would Ukraine be a special case?

It was more dangerous for the US to have Soviet missiles pointed at it from 90 miles away during the middle of the Cold War than it is for Russia to have a sixth bordering country join organizations of mostly liberal democracies.

Not from the russkies point of view, obviously.
And Ukraine isn't a special case. They were just to weak after the wall fell to stop the baltic states from joining, and i'm sure the same goes for the two other member states, but i don't know which ones you mean.
Finland wanted to remain on friendly terms with the russkies, and so they haven't joined. And they were historically more in Swedens zone of influence (or rather, actually part of Sweden) than Russias.

Norway does border, so i guess they are the special case because they aren't in Russias sphere of influence.

NATO countries bordering on Russia are Norway (joined 1949), Poland (1999), Estonia (2004), Latvia (2004), Lithuania (2004). The latter four were all in Russia's sphere of influence. Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania were in the USSR and Poland was a satellite state of the Soviet Union. So why not Ukraine?

The Baltic states joined fifteen years after the fall of the Berlin wall. Was Russia still too weak? Was Putin not President? It's been fifteen years since these Baltic states have joined (20 if you count Poland). During these years, what acts of aggression have they committed against Russia? None, of course, since NATO is supposed to be a defensive alliance.

EU countries bordering on Russia are Finland (1995), Poland (2004), Estonia (2004), Latvia (2004), Lithuania (2004). The Baltic states (and Poland) joined fifteen years ago. In those fifteen years, what have these countries done to Russia in those fifteen years? Nothing, but there economies have grown tremendously, unlike the economies of Belarus, Ukraine, and Georgia.

well the correct answer to most of this is in the very message you responded to. No, ukraine still isn't a special case, yes the russians are still mad as hell about those four states joining nato, and yes they were too weak to do anything to stop it (besides a lot of whining). Finland could probably join without a massive shitfit, but it would absolutely hamper their trade with Russia in a big way.

and what the flying fuck does the economic state of the baltics compared to georgia have to do with russian military defense interests?  you think they give a shit? :lol

And i'm not stanning for Russia - they aren't the good guys here, just like the US weren't in the 60's. I'm saying you are a bit dumb if you think that they don't feel massively threatened by a potential ukrainian nato membership.

No, Russia does not give a shit. But are prosperity, security, and cooperation going to make these countries greater threats to their neighbors, including Russia?

Move the goal posts more. The issue was not whether Russia felt threatened but whether its response was justified. Nintex wrote that "you can't [attempt to] extend the reach of NATO and the EU to the border of Russia and not expect a backlash from Russia." Note: the backlash included waging war and annexing part of the country. And you wrote, in response to whether Ukraine could join NATO (or the EU), "of course they can, but only in the same way a sovereign state can choose to store a russian nucelar arsenal on their territory in exchange for financial aid if they so choose." Your implication seems to be that a military response is justified or at least natural, or at least as justified and natural as the US's response to an attempt to put nuclear weapons 90 miles from its shores. You failed to show how the situations were equivalent.

The government of Russia may feel threatened, but that does not mean there is much of a threat. What have Poland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania--all either countries formerly part of the USSR or a satellite of the USSR bordering on Russia--done or tried to do to Russia since joining NATO? What would be different with Ukraine?

The general consensus about Ukraine here among historians and pundits in the Netherlands was (and this was before they shot down a commercial airliner) that Russia overreacted much like the US overreacted post 9/11 because
they were shocked at how fast Yanukovich was overthrown by his enemies.

Hardliners in the Russian government had seen how Yanukovich was disposed of within a week or two and were legit worried that Putin and Lukashenko would be next to be toppled within days if the protests would spread to the red square in Russia. Especially because Russia sort of considers Ukraine part of its sphere of influence and the Arab spring had spread like wildfire.

On Wednesday, after inquiries from The Times, Mr. Bloomberg’s team issued a statement addressing his history of insensitive comments.

“Mike has come to see that some of what he has said is disrespectful and wrong,” said a spokesman, Stu Loeser, who served as Mr. Bloomberg’s City Hall press secretary and is now advising his prospective presidential bid. “He believes his words have not always aligned with his values and the way he has led his life.”

Mr. Bloomberg is loath to admit fault, and the statement stops short of an apology. But it signals a recognition among aides that his behavior — little-known outside New York City circles — will face heavy scrutiny should he enter the 2020 presidential race, at a time when questions of gender and workplace conduct have taken center stage.

Mr. Bloomberg’s aides point to his remarks at a 2018 event for Emily’s List, which supports female political candidates who are in favor of abortion rights. “Thanks to so many women who have courageously spoken out, the #MeToo movement has shone a spotlight on sexual assault, abuse and harassment that, disgracefully, society has tolerated for a very long time,” Mr. Bloomberg said at the time.

His team also noted Mr. Bloomberg’s efforts as mayor of New York to promote abortion rights policies, like requiring city hospitals to instruct resident doctors on abortion care. Bloomberg L.P. now offers 26 weeks of paid parental leave to a primary caregiver, along with benefits for gender-transition surgery.

New York billionaire Michael Bloomberg, who is deciding whether to launch a Democratic presidential bid, is pouring $100 million into an online advertising campaign attacking President Donald Trump.

The campaign, which targets voters in four general election battleground states — Arizona, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin — begins running on Friday, according to Bloomberg spokesman Jason Schechter.
great start, blowing a hundred million on online advertising against Trump, definitely in it to win it

I think a billionaire knows better how to spend his money than an octo-child-fetishist who had to file for bankruptcy due to his addiction.
