Basically how I do it is:
1) Drop mid-late when a lot of the people have thinned out.
2) Go for smaller parts that aren't cities as those are populated with people
3) Loot as fast as you can in said small villages and then go toward the treelines/rocks of the map.
4) Prone/crouch as needed
5) Avoid cities/buildings as much as you can. If you see any open doors, avoid those areas. They're either picked or someone is camping
6) Prone near the edge of the circle.
7) If any vehicle is coming, prone (if in the treelines) as half the time they're taking the main road and the other times they'll blow past you as if you weren't there. (Basically like this:

You should be able to make it to top 10 doing this and playing hide and seek for as long as possible.
