FedEx says my phone might be here Friday instead of Monday or Tuesday!! :o Yes!! :rejoice

tasty, did you go for the xl or regular?

Regular, white, 128 GB. :) I had the Pixel 2 XL last year, but I prefer smaller phones, and the Pixel 3 is basically a small Pixel 2 XL -- best of both worlds.

I just figured out it's the iPhone of Android.

From a great many perspectives, that's been Google's primary playbook with the Pixel line. Still a ways to go on the support/retail sides but they are making progress.

Also, the phones this year are indeed using Samsung panels (just as Apple and, well, Samsung themselves do.) Last year's controversial Pixel 2 XL panel was sourced from LG so it makes sense that people are noticing a big improvement this year.

Holy shit those photo comparisons. :o Pixel 3 is a true generational leap.

 :thinking

i dont see it man, looks very incremental relative to XS and Note 9, and ymmv relative to how much you're into HDR.

Pixel Stand seems pretty smart and the current wireless charger to beat.

Quote
In our hands-on, we learned that Google is using some special way of communicating with the Stand, thanks to a data stream embedded in the wireless charging signal. That means you can have different settings for different Stands (say one at home, one at the office) and you can't get these features with any other wireless charging accessories.

For those that find the Pixel line just a bit too premium:

https://9to5google.com/2018/10/29/oneplus-6t-official-specs-price/

Good stuff. Probably whiffs on the camera compared to current flagships but that's a good design and great specs at a decent price. And post-Project Treble/Oreo, I'm much more likely to recommend a third-party phone these days (as long as the UI keeps close to stock, a la Essential, Motorola, OnePlus, etc.)

 :(

But Google's Android OEM agreement prevents manufacturers from making phones with more than one notch, and it has to be on a "short side" (top or bottom.) :)

Says that the iPad Pro destroys the Slate.
:dunno

It doesn't surprise me. The first software update including tablet mode on Chrome OS only just came out a few days ago. :lol :lol

Google has a ways to go on the experience, but the basics of a really amazing app/program library is there for the future. And as Android demonstrated, if Google can keep focused on something for a few goddamn years it usually turns out pretty good.

Can you pair up the Home minis as a stereo setup like you can for the new Dots?  What are some of the best home accessories (smart bulbs, smart plugs, etc)

Stereo, no, unless you get a Home Max. But LOL at getting two of those things for just stereo support.

But you can create arbitrary synced groups. Not the same as stereo but good for multi-room audio.

I decided to go with Philips Hue for lightbulbs since they're the market leader, but the bulbs are individually expensive and need a hub to function. Google is now recommending GE's C-Life hubless smart bulbs (selling them bundled with Home Minis), so you should probably go with them if you don't need other light types (like Hue's light strips) or accessories (like Hue's detachable Wi-Fi dimmer switches, of which I have two.)

I still haven't found a personal use case for smart plugs.

As for the rest of my smart home:

- Chromecasts on all TVs is one of the most important cornerstones for me personally. Home will sometimes display info or follow-up questions on the TV, plus the obvious functionality of casting photos/videos/security cam footage.
- My Roomba is Wi-Fi connected, and in addition to having it on a set schedule, I can also activate and turn it off using the Google Assistant. (There's also a neat IFTTT service that will pause the Roomba when you get a call on your phone.)
- I use a Logitech Harmony Hub to control my TV's on/off state and volume levels by voice. (It's janky as fuck though, but that's all on Logitech's side.)
- I have a Nest Cam IQ indoor camera, and it works flawlessly with Google's products as you'd expect.
- I have Google Wifi for a router. There's hints that more integration with Google Home and their other smart home products is in development, which reaffirms my decision to get one.
- Finally, I have a Weight Gurus Wifi Scale -- I step on it, it beeps twice, I step off, and my weight is automatically posted to Google Fit (without the hellish nightmare that is Bluetooth syncing to a smartphone app each time.)

If I expected to have my own apartment and a stable income in 2019, my next purchases would likely be the Wi-Fi-enabled Roomba mop ("Braava Jet"), Nest thermostat, Nest smoke detector, and the Nest Secure alarm system (already down $100 from its release last year.)

PS- The dumbest but most surprisingly-useful IFTTT service I've found yet merely blinks my Hue lights when my Dominoes order a block away is ready for pickup.

"Google's Find My Device can now map out exactly where you left your phone inside some buildings"

Protip: If you don't want Find my Phone to generate a notification on your lock screen when you use it from a desktop or other device, you can set the notification channel for it to the lowest setting (Silent and Minimize.) (You can also do this for any notification you get.)

I am now the proud owner of a Pixelbook.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
It's a justified business expense 😏 -- I actually *did* need something for app development since my $200 ARM Chromebook just can't run certain Intel-based Linux apps. Specifically, Google's own Flutter dev kit doesn't run on ARM. And while $700 ($300 off) is just OK for the specs it's spectacular for the actual hardware/build quality.

Not looking forward to buying a shitty used Mac and iPhone to export the iOS version but I'm pretty happy with my decision, presently.

But They'll fix it for free.

Hey Tasty,

My keyboard and pen came in for my slate. They're both pretty nice, and I think this would be a capable PC/Mac replacement (if just for basic productivity work).

The keyboard doesn't feel as much of a design slam dunk as the current iPad Pro one, but I think it probably types better, plus it's more useful all around since Apple neglected to really take advantage of hotkeys (or a touch pad). It feels very solid. I wish the "hinge" was a little more solid. It feels particularly rubbery, especially when you bend the keyboard back to go into tablet mode.

Pen seems very responsive. Probably won't use it much until OneNote finishes loading my gigs of journals.

Nice!

Yeah I'm curious about the keyboard the most, especially the rounded keys. Otherwise it seems the same as the Pixelbook's keyboard which is flat out amazing.

And then Pen is fun. It's weird that it works better in a JavaScript port of MS Paint than Google Keep though. :thinking
