I just want to point out that's not entirely accurate. I only had 2 accounts because it took 3 weeks for the confirmation email to show up in my ISP address I used to sign up, and in the mean time I tried a gmail account that was confirmed immediately. I was posting on both, but the alt only for a few threads a few times, and it was NOT in any kind of bad standing until last night when I made Morrigan mad enough to start sending me PMs. Then both accounts were banned.

Now I call noted hate site and doxxxing enterprise, The Bore, my shitposting home for good. The second account I used to post in threads where my posts wouldn't immediately be attacked and reported by the same 3-4 people who obsess over me on private discords and have been trying to get me banned since before RE was even officially up. And it worked, because they had civil conversations with me when they didn't know it was me

Take that same userbase and set of sub-reddits and convert it into a normal threaded discussion format and you'd have a better place to discuss things.

You'd have an unreadable mess where a hundred people reacting to one asshole can derail a thread for a dozen pages. On Reddit, you collapse that assholes comment with a single click and forget about the ensuing mess forever, while you pursue other threads (or join the cirklejerk below the top comment  ).

That's why you have moderation for when things get out of hand.

I have yet to get heavily downvoted for posting something critical that I've also explained. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I think I only had one post with heavy minus since I registered a year ago. I find it funny that GAFrera demonizes the site, even though reddits like /Games and even the supposed nazi-cesspool /southpark give some of their biggest downvotes to dumb rednecks. It's a good system that gets rid of trolls and trumpers without feeling like Rera's wannabe nerd-communism.
But ultimately I need forum structures that allow for long-term topics.

I did have a funny reddit happening recently.

Two months ago, when Brandon Ingram was really struggling, someone on /nba made a critical Ingram post. I responded with the question: Tell me the difference between Ingranm's game and Travis Outlaw's game. I got 200 upvotes.

Ingram finally had a good game and scored 30 points. Someone dug up the two month old comment to pop back "OUTLAW NEVER SCORED 30 on the Warriors at age 20!" (Outlaw's career high is actually 36 versus the Warriors of a different era and Travis was 23 I think.)

That's not what made it special. What made that two month old call back special was this Laker fan broadcasting my old joke to his buds and getting 25 upvotes for himself for long dead post.

Subreddits like T_D aren't gonna be anything but circlejerks, that's to be expected. The circlejerk is real in not as focused subs, too, no doubt about it, but in effect I don't see much difference in discussion quality between that and any megathreads on big forums.
You don't get downvoted in forums, everyone just joins in a chorus to tell you how wrong you are or plain ignores you. Provided you even voice your divisive opinion. As you say, people prefer to be around like-minded people, and once a critical mass is reached it's either applause or throwing rotten fruit.

My completely pulled out of my ass theory is that there's a cultural factor here at play. I think Americans like to put things in categories and that they are not as friendly as they think they are.

My completely unscientific view is that if the two extremes are cold and efficient or familiar and friendly, then the Americans fall into more cold side of things, and that plays well into the tendency to place things into boxes or categories.

Hence the confusion in the article. Interactions have to be placed in boxes and rules HAVE to be spelled out. It's not bad it's just how the culture works.
