I think what most western gamers don't get about RPGs is that many oldskool ones (especially DQ) tend to be more about resource management and fighting smaller scale encounters instead of just a few big, more challenging fights. And also Dunkey does the typical westerner "run from all the monsters, get trounced by the boss, grind for 4 hours, then bitch about grinding".

I think westerners would be more open to grinding if it was done like in wow or diablo, realtime. Also the DQ fights are super easy so there is little challenge to the grinding (at least from the few hours i played). So it really breaks the flow even if you put tje combat on superhyperspeed (the fact there is super speed shows how silly combat is)

I finished DQXI and got to level 99 without doing traditional grinding. For the final levels there's an easy to do setup using Pep Powers to get easy as fuck XP. But if you don't bother to learn the game's mechanics then sure, grind like its 1989.

Good RPG developers figured out how to do encounter balance a long time ago, but people in the west didn't play that many JRPGs so they think everything is balanced like a bad NES game.
