Patreon is only e-begging if you set it up that way.
The basic structure can simply be that of a subscription model, not that different from Netflix or whatever.
Pay X monthly, to receive Y product.

Though i have nothing against a more open "just give me a dollar if you want me to keep doing this as a day job".
For artists in particular, it's a decent model.

I don't think there is anything wrong with Patreon;  but the whining is ridiculous lol

I'm only tangentially dunking on patreon, because for every "I'm an artist working in a mostly non commercial space, and I'd like to continue doing so" there are 10+ "I argue with people all fucking day on twitter, help me stay a dilettante while I work on my screenplay" - its eras tradional rush to whine about the Fat Cat Shareholders Ruining Everything on a platform that if it didnt exist would have them earning nothing.

e:
I mean, let's be honest - if you could opt out of paying whatever tiny sliver of tax goes towards endowments of the arts, era posters would be the first fucking people doing so

Given SweetNicoles previous history of history with steam users, they're awfully bullish on Epic news, and making sure negative topics about Epic are amended to include Epics stance

A cynic might begin to wonder if Epics commitment to provide kickbacks to 'influencers' and their current throwing money around might be related.

It would be the same as if MS / Sony / Nintendo suddenly stopped selling games at retail and made all future titles only available from their own digital storefront.
And also just randomly moneyhatted a bunch of third party titles for a year long exclusivity deal while doing that.

epic store doesn't allow keys to be sold on 3rd party sites so the price is always higher than steam, they don't have platform level support for controllers so not every controller is supported, they don't have any kind of family share or in home streaming, also there's a whole linux thing that i don't quite understand but i guess almost everything in steam runs on linux through an emulator now?

for me its 99.9% a price thing as i don't use most of the steam features other than cloud save and sometimes streaming to my laptop. also there's no 2FA on Epic so there's a security risk there because goddam hackers really want everyone's Fortnite bux. I closed my epic account just to stop all the fucking password reset emails from that shit.

Nobody would care if Epic just had its own shop that it sold games on, a la humble / gog / amazon / walmart / et al.
Which is why they're moneyhatting games.

Personally, it's because i like to pay as little as possible for my games, and buy most of them from CDKeys and similar, so having only one storefront is shit.
But i also don't like Steam, because it annoys me having to have a client just to play a game (that's why i'd buy from GoG all the time, if they had the games, and i wasn't a cheap cunt).

console gamers are shook because console gaming is the compromise solution to gaming at whatever arbitrary goldilocks point the hardware manufacturer invented between 'runs on whatever laptop / tablet you already own' and 'enthusiast bells & whistles gaming rig'.

A 720p 30fps streamed game isn't gonna need a T1 internet backbone connection, and as multiple best sellers have proved, 720p 30fps is good enough for the mass majority

Imagine having an internet platform where all trailers of games live. It's so pervasive that your competitors rely upon it to stream their press conferences and upload their video game trailers. Imagine every time someone wants to get information about a video game, they need to use your search engine to find it too. Now imagine also being able to instantly sell such video games as simple hyperllink, without a storefront, without hardware, and without an install. It simply exists in your browser. The browser is the hardware. The browser is the storefront. The opportunities to undermine your competitors under such circumstances are virtually endless.

here's my hot take: the Stadia will not drive Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo out of the console business. The industry is slowly changing and this is just another small step towards games as a service, but all the major players will learn to adapt and survive, even Nintendo imo. Whether Stadia is an actual success will remain to be seen. Only Google knows what goal they have for it and whether it is considered a success internally. Maybe they are just getting their feet wet, or trying to brute force their way into the industry. Remember, Msoft took huge losses on the original Xbox.

Assuming Stadia will be a success that needs to be emulated is getting way ahead of things. Certain genres work fine via streaming, and some don't really work at all. Digital Foundry pegging Stadia at 186ms of lag isn't promising.

I like streaming when I'm out of the house, it was part of the reason I got a PS4 Pro (for 1080p instead of 720p). And I've had a Steam Link since that product launched. But there are plenty of games I can't stand to play via streaming at all because it is too poor of an experience. Stadia has serious advantages in theory over those streaming products, even uploading with my gigabit fiber connection, but it doesn't have any kind of game-changing advantage.
