Well yes, as many people have noted in this thread, context exists. Note that dude is trying to flash the gesture at camera, isn't showing his face, is doing it behind a black reporter, etc. There's a reason that the argument isn't "hey, dude thinks things are just going OK out there, so he's talking about how he's feeling OK". Even you have been arguing from the defense that this is someone being a cheeky troll.

You are saying that we should treat people who are using the hand gesture to be cheeky trolls differently from people who are doing it to reference white supremacist ideology.

I am saying that this is impossible, because white supremacy and fascism in general are built around a culture of cheeky trollishness, and the only reason the symbol is taboo or the domain of cheeky trollishness now is because of its association with white supremacist organizing.

The guy flashing it at the camera is probably not going to shoot up a mosque this week. The act still serves white supremacist goals. There is no reason to give someone serving white supremacist goals the benefit of the doubt.
I haven't seen that symbol used for the game in over 10 years. No one does an okay sign low.
This is what I asked Audioboxer who has not been forthcoming with a response, what is in this scenario the reasonable explanation? A white dude purposefully tried to get it on camera while a black dude was talking. What was he saying "okay" to? Where is the benefit of reasonable doubt coming from exactly?
They can defend themselves after the fact. Conscious white supremacy thrives on plausible deniability.
Dude won't even answer basic questions. Pane of glass.
Like I said earlier in the thread, the wikipedia article on the OK sign is historically and culturally comprehensive. Thus it can be assumed that the average person has common access to not only historical origins and multicultural usage of the OK sign, but also its continually-evolving usage up through today. There is no need to challenge people in this thread just for the sake of challenging them, this thread is about the news item and the use of the OK sign in that instance, and the implications of such use in TODAY's world. Let's move forward now. Thank you.

And I'd really appreciate if we could discuss things without resorting to personal digs against each other, but for those insisting on that, know that I'll probably not be replying or seeing your posts again. If your argument about me being wrong is going for ad hominem AND distorting what I actually said, that's an obvious pretty poor counter argument.
Quote from: ZattMurdock
Don't be disingenuous. That's obviously not what I've said. Saying that "Zatt has a problem" crosses the line and it's an obvious personal dig. Calling me "Harry Knowles" for posting "Nuff said", an obvious Stan Lee reference, it's a personal attack for those that know who Knowles is - I do. It's quite clear what I meant: attack my arguments, there is no need for personal digs.

Given the talent behind it it's probably a good anime but this guys criteria for what makes a good show are pretty funny

So what's so good about it? A great number of things, really:
A black main character: when we are first introduced to Carole, I was joking to my SO about us seeing her tanlines any minute now. No such thing. Carole is a black woman, and she is goddamn fantastic. Her character is written respectfully too, and it makes all the difference

(Re)presentation if off the charts: Yes, the show is gorgeous. But I am not talking visuals, but the vast number of different people represented: white, black, asian, arab, hetero, gay, bisexual, transgender, all of these groups have made appearances as of episode 4, be it as main or minor characters. And all of them are treated with respect - as people - not the basis for a joke as we see so commonly in anime

Characters are multidimensional: No one is a walking trope, everyone has a past and relationships that will surprise you

It's like he's going through a checklist

like with JUSSIE we have BAN JUSTICE again in Chicago (but not NeoGAF.com where I, filler and Cauli remain banned unjustifiably)

The Cubs have concluded their investigation of an incident in which a fan sitting behind NBC Sports Chicago reporter Doug Glanville “more likely than not” used a racist gesture on air Tuesday night.

The fan used the gesture while Glanville, who is black, was making an on-air report during the Cubs’ 5-2 win over the Marlins. It’s been associated with white nationalists and right-wing trolls in recent years.

Team president of business operations Crane Kenney, who first sent a press release hours after the game stating the team was looking into the incident, said team has found the gesture racially motivated. The Cubs haven’t been able to reach the fan after multiple attempts, but they’ve sent him a letter notifying him of the team’s decision to indefinitely ban him from Wrigley Field.
Quote
Glanville, who said he became aware of what happened after the broadcast segment occurred, offered his appreciation for the Cubs’ and NBC Sports Chicago’s handling of the incident. “They have displayed sensitivity as to how the implications of this would affect me as a person of color,” Glanville said in a statement.

The former big league outfielder also said he would comment further upon the completion of the Cubs’ ongoing investigation.

The incident comes less than a month after Major League Baseball launched an investigation into racist messages sent to Cubs relief pitcher Carl Edwards Jr. on social media.

My 2 cents after reading through the various reactions:

In my opinion the kneejerk reaction to criticism of violence in videogames is characteristic of gamers collective response to criticism of videogames in general. It's like it stems from a desire to protect the hobby, not unlike what happens with other subcultures. Skateboarding culture is a good example of this.

I'm totally guilty of this as well. The Sekiro threads about game difficulty were what got me riled up but I digress.

That same tendency to have a kneejerk reaction to any criticism is, in my opinion, what leads to some of the darker, more dispicable things we've seen develop aroind gaming in recent history. The fact tjat there are people having actual, verifiable, medically diagnosable reactions to the circumstances in which they work, forced or not, should give us pause.

https://www.resetera.com/threads/kotaku-id-have-these-extremely-graphic-dreams-what-its-like-to-work-on-ultra-violent-games-like-mortal-kombat-11.115855/page-9#post-20596760

I mean, the article addresses this? They all knew that they were working on a violent game, which made it harder for them to talk about how badly it was affecting them.

And, besides how silly the comparison is of a digital artist and a doctor, doctors have mental health help available to them, as do everyone working in the healthcare industry. I don't know how much of that is available in the video game industry but I'm going to guess it's not a lot.

If you read the article (from more than a decade ago) he IS in fact also talking about institutional disadvantages suffered by black people, albeit in an eye rollingly clumsy way.

Biden is a trash candidate but there's plenty of things he said verbatim, this month that you could post about. Posting this in the context and manner you did is literally amplifying somebody's oppo.

I'm all for dragging politicians for their crap - like the way he treated Anita Hill but can we please at least frame it accurately?
This shit is pathetic. And you should feel bad for it. Quotes and links are in the OP, the date is as well. "we need to frame his overtly racist rhetoric in the right context to be fair to him".

Get the fuck out of here with that argument.

You used quotes. They have a specific purpose. You could have said, "incompetent racially insensitive Joe Biden's crazy racist 2007 interview "

But you can't get mad at people for pointing out objective problems with your wording and then have the gall to infer they must agree with your paraphrasing of a sentence he didn't say. Just man up and ask a mod to fix your innacurate and misleading title. The conversation and topic are fair game. So is Joe's legacy.
Oh let me quote you again with this embarrassing discrimination excusing bullshit for your edit. This is disgusting and you should feel bad for now putting this much effort into telling me I should frame his racist rhetoric in the right context for him. The fuck out of here with that.

I seriously cant believe here of all places how many people are coming out with the "we need to frame this talk in the right light" arguments or "Biden wasnt beng racist hes just making a clumsy attempt at disadvantage". Bunch of fucking hypocrites.

Your post title and phrasing are why you're having to argue with and insult people instead of discussing the real problems with Joe Biden. And you could fix it now with a PM but if you'd rather just call people enabling racists go nuts.
Youve now spent 3 posts (in essence with your edit) arguing over the decorum of quoting a racist rather than engaging in the actual content of the post. You want to keep going to bat for how we should frame the racist in the right light, go nuts.

Count how many times you've defended it, had to explain to people that you obscured the text in spoilers, failed to try and edit to address the confusion and continue to infer and directly accuse people of siding with racism.
Nah Ive had to call out people who are mad I didn't highlight and emphasize the dates when they were included in the OP. And now 4 posts where your entire contribution to the thread has been, we need to frame racist white man in the proper light. Good guy stinkles over here.

Quote from: The OP
Also gross title change by whatever mod went ahead and changed it to a more innocuous title. Wouldn't suspect this would be the same situation had this been Trump.

Joe Biden is literally Star Lord punching Thanos rn, except instead of it being for grief, it's for greed.

According to my almost finished fanfiction. AOC and Ivanka will run on a bipartisan thottie ticket.
To be honest though, their presidential campaign is not the primary focus of my writing.

Frank O‘Connor asking a poster to “man up“ perpetuates gender stereotypes and is deeply problematic.
:yikes

Might be worth digging if he called himself an expat before.
