When I was in film school, a student told me that I didn’t deserve to be there because I didn’t love Christopher Nolan or consider him a great action director. I was a bit taken aback. I'll say I don't conflate Liberalism with Centrism. I dislike capital-L Liberalism in nearly all its forms, but Centrism specifically describes to me a school of politics based on reconciliation between two opposed extremes, so it always exists in relation to the extremes which have distinct identities.
Centrism is by nature right sided and only works if you have a strong left.
Supporting small companies isn't a "right wing" policy. Why would you even believe that? A right wing policy would be to allow more coal mining so the coal industry doesn't die instead of working on new jobs for the people so the coal industry can end.
Self-proclaimed "centrists" don't tout the "both sides are the same!" line in response to budget deficit solutions. They tout it almost exclusively in response to criticism of the far right.

Consequently, centrism in American is simply a compromise between stagnant liberalism and fascism. This leads to the following confusion: isn't conservatism supposed to preserve working traditional institutions and social forms? Only if what conservatism is conservative with respect to is actually progressive - i.e., leftist; otherwise it simply reinforces regressive social and political norms.
I'll give you a less hyperbolic example then. Austerity and Keynesian spending in response to economic downturn. Is the answer somewhere in the middle? No. The answer is actually to just do away with capitalism
Political power doesn't swing in blocks over nearly half a century. In that case you don't have a pendulum, but an arc. It's a game of inches and the right is winning. Virtually the entire of Western Europe and North America has been marching rightward during this time period. The exception are social issues (which even then can be argued to be a bit mixed) and that's because it doesn't really effect the structures of the ruling classes.
I mean just look at the European Parliament elections. Right wing parties made a lot of grounds in quite a few nations, especially France. We're one recession away from the tipping point.
I don't consider Third Wayism/Blairism "centrist", for example, even if they did occupy the territory of "centrists" for a couple of decades (the Clinton Years to the Obama years). Can't really speak on non-British European politics in that time frame, I barely know anything about Clinton's America, even.
Centrism is an ideology, this is one is the biggest things I hate about Centrists.
Centrism means in Europe the same that in the US: right wing economic policies.
Also, I want to point out that if we set aside policy, ideologically speaking, centrism doesn’t really make sense. The left believes that people should be equal, and class/race divides should be minimized. The right believes that people should be inherently unequal, and a hierarchy must be enforced and protected because it is the natural order of things - if someone is at the top they deserve to be there. What does centrism believe? That some people should be equal but not too equal? Some class/race divide is good but not entirely? Hierarchies are natural but not too natural? There is no core ideological axiom to centrism.
I think the difference is that, in Europe, centrism is these days based on a strong support for the liberal, rules-based order, respecting the freedoms and rights and not falling into xenophobic scapegoating, whereas centrism in the US consists on letting the GOP, a literal fascist party, do whatever the fuck they want with no consequence.

I think you're conflating conservatism with moderation. I have always considered myself a conservative anarchist, because I believe in the goals of anarchism, but understand the pull of tradition. EU centrism has been killing thousands of people in the Mediterranean sea and in Northern Africa. They also help bomb and invade different Middle Eastern aand African countries when it fits their agenda. And then there's the whole austerity and neoliberalism thing they love so much, while giving way for fascists to gain popularity and channel the public discontent towards fascism and neo-nazism.
I don't want to jump down your throat too hard here but the "economic policy and social policy are interlinked" argument isn't because there's not enough money to give to the poor after you give tax cuts to the wealthy. It's because when you give tax breaks to, say, NYC real estate developers and tell them to go make money on these lots here in this poor neighborhood, the properties they set up tend to be for a higher income bracket. The more expensive lots begin the process of gentrification where the people moving in are vastly more skilled and educated with greater spending power than the people being priced out. The people being priced out often have to move away, where there's less economic opportunity, because the economic opportunity is going to the more skilled/richer people now living in what was historically their neighborhood. This starts compounding on itself because, naturally, the richer neighborhood develops at a faster pace than the poorer neighborhood because the richer neighborhood just has more wealthy tenants while the poorer segments of the city/town are being concentrated into one specific area that's under-invested in because no one wants to invest in a poor area. When the poor area does get developed, though, the same thing happens again so a new generation of tenants get priced out. Stats have shown social climbing is heavily based on generational wealth so the poorer your family is, the harder it is for you to get out of it. This is just one very reductive example but the pattern plays out again and again in every sector of modern developed nations.The idea is that everything you do to make money (in market capitalism) sends ripples across society and will impact people on the bottom, usually negatively, and this is why people can't consistently be "socially liberal, economically conservative". It is not simply a matter of there being a limited amount of money to divide between two areas, although that's still true on the surface, but that "making money" tends to be a transfer of total wealth from the lower class to the upper class.
Centrism in america is historically just a term for being on the fence or appealing to the status quo. The problem is that in America, most times the status quo is broken because our institutions are built on a house of corrupt cards in most ways. So if your not appealing for progress, one is usually appealing to either keep things broken or break them further.The issue is that there is no actual 'left' in America wholesale. The furthest left there is(in the progressive wing of the democratic party consisting of about a handful of people in the actual party apparatus, Bernie Sanders, AOC, Rashida Talib ect) is what the center left essentially is in Europe. Depends on who you're compromising with, never compromise with fascists. At that point you're just compromising for compromising's sake instead of protecting the core ideas of democracy. That's how liberal democracies slip into authoritarianism. Hungary, Poland have made that slip already. The US, Brazil and India are slipping.
