you know what else is timeless in relation to comedy films, liking a post with an Annie Hall clip and then unliking it as part of some kind of vengeance against me

Annie Hall is another movie which will assuredly never stop being funny, ever, and frankly I think your whole post is just wrong.

as a punk/hardcore kid, metal is probably a good 60% of what i listen to nowadays. love it all from funeral doom to ridiculous theatrical metal tacory. stuff that somehow merges the energy of punk with the composition/technical ability of extreme metal is nectar.

This is dope

:ohhh

Don't like this as much. It's more thrash and not big on thrash drums. It's still solid but it doesn't tick all the boxes of the song I posted which manages to combine the positive feeling of rock with lament of metal.

The drumming in the song headwalk posted is a type of blast beat, which is very particular to death, black metal, grindcore and deathcore, but not at all used in thrash metal.

the common quintessential thrash beat is the skank beat, which is common in punk, which you like, and ska. Which makes sense because thrash is basically the love child between punk and NWOBHM. The basic blast beat, which you hate, is basically a skank beat at 2x the tempo. Although there are many variations of both. Al

Blast beats didn't become common until basically Pete Sandoval of Morbid Angel started using them frequently, there are examples of very few thrash bands (Dark Angel comes to mind) and even Black Sabbath and some jazz drummers using them decades earlier.

I like it within a specific context, but if it's on and on I just don't care much.

I guess this is what I mean by thrash drums.

And yes, punk has this. But I don't fuck with that kind of punk.

the one that starts at 0:35 in is a skank beat. It can get repetitive, I agree, but it is the hallmark of the thrash genre. I mean, most genres of metal are going to have a fast tempo, and I get a feeling that if you sped up any kind of beat you may find it annoying.

Apple Music editors notes on the albums as I listen during the workday are an excellent example as to why it's my preferred service.

I've listened to Master of Reality a few times but this time the Ed. notes really helped me understand within the context of history and its influence.

Meanwhile, Spotify offers no such context. Apple Music helps contextualize music within the confines of its period, what it influences, its influences, all tied to a neat paragraph blurb. Apple Music is the service for those who like finding music. It unfortunately doesn't do this for every album, though.

Before, I listened to Sabbath's Master of Reality, I thought it was good. But after listening to them grow sequentially you can hear them get heavier and heavier as the genre just continues to evolve. It's fascinating. By Master of Reality almost all of the blues influences of rock has been washed away. Like, before it felt like just a much heavier rock. But then in Master of Reality they pull out all the stops especially in Embryo. It's just full on heavy metal.

Love it.

What genre is Black Sabbath considered? Traditional metal?

- Black Sabbath down
- Judas Priest next and I'll start Iron Maiden (who I know nothing about) after that

Might be embarrassing to admit but my introduction to metal was Vice City's V-Rock. lol

I know Judas Priest as the You've Got Another Thing Comin guys.

I have GTA, MTV, VH1, and TLR to thank for helping me develop a wide eclectic taste in music tbh. But especially GTA. I'm confident I would have never given rock a shot without V-rock.

Thoughts on Goa Trance?

I like a bit of goa and psytrance, and even made a psy mix for a genre competition at a DJ board I go to (where you're randomly assigned different genres). Deep/tech/prog/disco house is my favorite though.

So with electronic here are samples of genres.

Trance - what people think of when others mention electronic. Think unce unce unce unce unce unce unce unce shit. Not my hype.

Techno - you know the original Mortal Kombat movie theme? With the electronic intro? That’s techno. I like it in gulps. If you know that intro you know it generally has more melody and scales than trance.

House - the progenitor electronic genre. Inspired by disco, has a big disco and funk influence. Can be dope vocal or without vocals. My preferred electronic genre and imo the most diverse. Because it came from disco and funk it has a big emphasis on soulful singing, beat drops, breaks, and pauses. House is a religion. Daft Punk, is house. French house specifically which is its own subgenre.

Notice the 4/4 beat.

Downtempo- wanna get down and chill?

Ambient - providing ambience, letting your mind fill the gaps, and taking your imagination for a ride. Very often a relax genre and has much collaboration and mixing with downtempo, chillwave;etc Often melodic.

Take Skin of the Night. It’s ambient but it also flirts with rock. Ambient is such a diverse genre where people do what the fuck ever and have genres mix and kiss and have foreplay so long as it’s ambient and atmospheric.

The techno I have heard people call "real techno" is super repetitive and devoid of melody. I like some trance. I love Goa Trance, I got into it because I love Juno Reactor.

There is also an instrumental rock band I love called Ozric Tentacles who have a lot of songs that are similar to Goa Trance, but played with live instruments. I think you'd like em Cindi.

Never heard Dio before today. Tonight on a walk I listened to Holy Diver (the song). As if an epiphany, the shadows of the trees shook during its pulsing ambient intro as the stars turned their backside to me. Pitch black. The wind gasped a nasally sigh; my hair blew. Then the guitars started. I had goosebumps.

I've listened to a bit of metal but it had never had an impact on me like that before.

I now want to fuck Dio.

Agra just check out some synthwave. Lots of longtime metalheads have gotten into it (including myself). It uses similar imagery of satanism and demonry just with a neon tint. Check out Perturbator, Carpenter Brut and Megadrive.

I think I checked synthwave out before, but it didn't stick with me. I'll plug your recommendations into Spotify and see where that takes me.

Still have all my band shirts, but I only wear them around the house. I find the "metal as a lifestyle" guys and gals pretty cringe, but whatever makes them happy.

Ronnie James Dio was a great man, and had some interesting things to say about organised religion (he wasn't a fan).

To shift gears a little bit. Here is something completely different. Modern, polished, very sad doom/prog/ metal.

Is Holy Diver Power Metal? If so, I think I found my metal sub genre.

Quote
Anthropologist Sam Dunn traced the origins of power metal back to the late 1970s, when the groundwork for power metal lyrical style was laid down by Ronnie James Dio. The fantasy-oriented lyrics he wrote for Rainbow, concentrated around medieval, renaissance, folk, and science fiction themes, directly influenced modern power metal bands

i don't know what happened to guitarists who could shred but still kept it raw, loose and full of swagger. the 80s was loaded with them with rhoads, EVH, viv campbell, nuno bettencourt, george lynch, slash and whoever else, but since then while you've got some absolutely unreal technical guitarists, but they all seem to be a bit on the wrong side of the virgin/chad spectrum as far as personality in their playing goes.

Couldn't agree more with the above. Modern shredders are too clinical and pristine and guitar tones and production also has become too homogenized so everyone sounds the same.
