I've never watched it but I heard at the end humanity turns into goop, and a kid masturbates over an unconscious girl.

And that a few of the eps were really shit cause the company was cash-poor.

I watched all of Monster. I watched all of Ghost in the Shell SAC. I've watched Cowboy Bebop maybe 2 or 3 times. I sat through Serial Experiments Lain and Ergo Proxy.

Still can't bring myself to watch Evangelion. Seems weeby as all hell

Is this the original or the remake?

By remake do you mean the reedited episodes that were in the anniversary boxset or... ?

Well it’s not. It’s a great show.

I'm a big Eva slut but I'm not sure I would call it a great show, objectively. There's a lot there and it's an important one, to be sure. The animation and drawing style are not among the best or most distinctive, budget cutting is pretty obvious at points. The story and tone goes off the rails somewhere after the midway point. The mecha/kaiju/1960-1970 homage & super cool SF visuals of that fortress city of the first half of the series has always been a joy in rewatch : it's light, it's spot on, it has just the right amount of weird ideas, playful grandiloquence and genre perversions Gainax excels at. Once everything (both in the story and actual show production) start going into that abyss of despair, it's really hit-and-miss in execution no matter how thought-provoking, subversive and intellectually interesting it can be. It's not the best thing Gainax did, it's maybe not even their best TV show.

Now, granted, the series turning dysfunctional and mad is what makes it so distinctive and a memorable flawed jewel instead of a serviceable above average show. But it's maybe not for everyone. And that TV ending... It's a wee bit shite in hindsight. Not-writing-death-threats-to-the-creator shite (well nothing is, really, but you get the point) bit it's pretty obvious it's the botched result of a team that wrote itself in a corner while running out of steam and money. I'm not in any way spiteful about it, failure is part of creation and it's what makes Evangelion what it is but I think fans tend to have a pretty heavy rose tinted pair of glasses to be able to see it and think it's a writing master plan imbued with philosophical wisdoms for the ages.

End of Evangelion is a great film however.

Yearly visit to EvaGeeks prompted by this thread, the Final Evangelion movie is still a thing (dubbing started in March). Kazuya Tsurumaki being one of the directors is the only thing I care for by this point.

I've consumed this series so backwards lmao.

Parts of Eva on Adult Swim
<20 years later>
Eva 1.11
Eva 2.22
Eva 3.33
End of Eva

And now the full series on Netflix. :doge

Still love it all though :rejoice

I'm in :rejoice

LK had his then-GF do another take and in my mind, they are the official English lyrics.

The theme song to an overrated anime
Someone kill me I'm already depressed!

ADV was a company
Who financed the dub of a popular show
That was then, this is now
It's become a cash cow
The shadow of what it used to be

How the hell
Did it do so well?
When the main character is totally gay
He whines like a girl, and fights like one too
Shouting "I must not run away!"

I always thought that anime heroes were meant to have big manly balls
But this guy Shinji seems quite unable to pick himself up when he falls

Why the hell do people think this show's a masterpiece?
It's a cartoon about a bunch of giant mechs
Interspersed with the story of an emo kid
And some pointless religious symbolism

By the way, the movies are all bullshit
Don't pretend you understand the ending!

Show is a mixed bag.

Like the characters. Well, some of the characters.

Like the mecha action. That's cool. Eva 01 wrecking shit was amazing to me the first time I saw the first 2 eps.

The story though. It's trash. Utter trash. I and other people at the time tried to decipher it but really, it's just a ridiculous story.

The worst part about Evangelion is how it ruined Japanese media after its release. Before Eva, a lot of Japanese stuff like games and anime were decipherable. Now they thought putting random latin words, completely indecipherable plots, meant making a good story. It's like they thought making a confusing, deep plot full of bs meant a good story. You can see it its influence in a lot of Japanese media after its release. It just made a lot of things for the worse.

Back in the day, it was highly suggested to read viewing guides and analysis to understand Eva. I printed out like 20 page analysis in 10th grade to understand the shit. Eva made that horse shit mainstream.

Eva sucks. But also, Eva doesn't suck. Up until episode 20 or so it's pretty good and it goes downward from there.

Also said nothing of Eva clones. FFVII took clear inspirations from Eva for example and it has not a single mecha.

the original dub was one of the better dubs.

I watched/rewatched (it's fuzzy how much I saw on Adult Swim 20 years ago) the first ep a few months back and the dub didn't hold up well at all IMO. It's the same actors but like, with 20 years of experience removed (compared to my reference point of the Rebuild movies) and pretty bad direction in parts. Maybe the dub improved after the first ep though.

They apparently redubbed it.  I'm curious, but this seems unnecessary on its face, the original dub was one of the better dubs.

That explains why the Japanese audio is labeled "original" but none of the others are.

I might watch it if the dub is good. The newer shows ok Hulu and Netflix have great dubs, but some shows are just unwatchable because the dubs suck so bad.

Like Gundam Unicorn   :-X :yuck

But that new Ultraman show and the fun for season 2 of attack on titan are great.

“Anno knew a guy from King Records named Otsuki, and as the story goes, the two were out drinking one day when Otsuki suggested to Anno that they work on an anime television project together. Anno agreed on the spot, came back to the office and promptly announced it to everyone. Nobody even batted an eyelash. We just accepted it without further thought.”

That’s an odd statement considering those who love evangelion seem to have also made up their minds. Or are they on the fence about it.

Real talk, evangelion is fine. I like it. don’t understand why anyone could be defensive of evsngelion of all things in 2019. It was one of the hyped up anime series of all time between its release to at least mid 2000’s  and people will have opinions about it.

I mean what’s there to talk about? It’s an evsngleion thread in 2019. And I don’t really see anyone who loves the show contributing anything to the thread besides memes. :yeshrug

In any case I haven’t seen Evangelion since EoE. I haven’t seen any of the 2.0 shit. What’s the point of it and why are they taking so long finishing it? I remember Eva fans talking about that shit ten years ago. Today they’re still talking about it. Is it delayed due to Gainax’s financial situation?

Gainax didn't make any of the Rebuild movies, that was all Studio Khara [which ones the rights to Eva through its founder, Hideki Anno]. Gainax is pretty much dead and has been for a nearly a decade.

Brain-drain killed them. Anno left and took people with him to form Khara, Imaishi left and took people with him to form Trigger. They've barely got anybody left to make the kinds of shows that they used to.
