Don't know why people don't like IBO Season 2. Thought it was pretty good. Sure, some of the new characters are lame and the show forget's them, but as a whole it was awesome. Mostly because it doesn't act like a sequel, just more of the story. The problem with things like 00 S2 and R2 beyond just being bad is they feel like a reestart for new viewers. They've got to rebuild the status quo and get back to the conflict and have new kind of pointless new characters. I did'nt really think IBO suffered from that, beyond not knowing what to do with the new characters beyond sideline them anyway.

Best Gundam is 0080.:snob

Sticks the landing of the series core message more than any Gundam, classic heartbreaking Tomino story, and only 6 episodes.

I know it's corny but every time I see someone on facebook named Evangeline I reply to their comment and type,"zankoku na tenshi no youni shounen na shin wa ni nare" and unless they're an anime fan it always goes over their head.

I watched the first two episodes.
Can't argue with the animation, really great.

I'm watching it dubbed though, and the dialogue, and i don't know if it's just the new translation or not, feels like it got a pass through Google Translate with a scrambled thesaurus thrown in.
Really fucking odd word choices and sentence structures, even in mundane conversations, to the point of being distracting.

Going by the internet's reactions, i assume the English dub in on the same level of "quality".

Yeah as i mentioned the odd phrase structure isn't an exclusive of the (new) English version.
I wonder if the other languages are based on it though, like a game of telephone.

Although to an extent, anime often struggles with adapting to other languages in a natural, flowing manner.

Apparently, a few years back Funimation took some liberties with 3.0's translation and Khara was pretty peeved when they found out about it, they sent in their own people to change it. And that's what happened here, they wanted the translation done a very specific way and they made sure they got it.

Maybe the new dub just makes Shinji sound older, and thus hotter, or maybe I don't have a headache this time around, but after 13 episodes it is definitely my favorite show.

I think the opposite should be written tbh. Hating Eva seemed pretty cool for a long time, and then it was dying down and GL came out and fair or not people made comparisons and the backlash kinda got reignited again.

And recently of course "Literally everyone hates 3.0. If you like it, you're wrong." :doge

I've seen far more people needing to defend Eva than vice versa. Like, it's pretty easy to pick on the series. There's a lot of goofy and batshit stuff that is laughable out of context, and oh yeah who doesn't love a good "GET BACK IN THE ROBOT SHINJI!!!" meme reference.

FTR the people complaining about the new dub are insane.  It's light years better than the amateurish ADV one and the Funimation one that emulated it.  There were numerous errors and gaffes in the original which are all corrected in this one, and they absolutely nail the tone in the intense and melancholic scenes (versus "yelling all the time" which was the only tone the ADV dub was able to pull off).

Recommended to give it a whirl.

You are VERY young.

Between 1998 and maybe 2003 Eva was considered THE anime not named DBZ and Sailor Moon.. THE anime. It was ADV - *the* American anime company's - bread and butter. Emphasis on *the*.

We were told this was the greatest anime of all time. For a period of like 5-6 years.

It ended with a dude be told congratulations repeatedly because the creator had a nervous breakdown.

"Easy to pick on Eva"? You weren't there. This show stuck with people, for better or for worse. Why? Because modern anime begins and ends with Evangelion. There's pre-Eva and post-Eva. It is *the* major shift.

I'll just paste what I wrote on a friends facebook post when were chatting about Eva the other day.

Quote
Evangelion is a classic example of something I like but don’t exactly love. I recall for nearly half a decade it was regarded the best anime ever and I ended up getting an ending where people surround the main character offering congratulations. I like the character drama, the brokenness of their personalities, and the the mecha action but it remains in my eyes the most overrated anime of all time. Evangelion still musters strong emotions even years later it seems.

On a personal note, I attribute Evangelion with the sharp decline in Japanese storytelling after its release. Where writers were obsessed with throwing in random Latin words they thought were deep and cryptic mythos similar to Eva. They started to drift from classic storytelling and more into thinking that the more “deep” a story is (and by depth they meant a lot of confusing, esoteric elements that may or may not hold relevance to the main story) to be better than something well told.

All though it remains my favorite Final Fantasy, FFVIII is an example of post-Evangelion “isn’t this deep?” fuckery. Or, as much as I love it, Xenogears. Compare FFVI’s near perfect storytelling to FFVII and VIII’s more convoluted approach and ask which one is better. You can tell they are clearly inspired by Evangelion even if it’s just bits and pieces.

Ergo, Evangelion ruined Japanese storytelling.

Despite my criticism I still like Evangelion. My critique sounds harsh, and it is, but it’s hard to separate how I like Eva and how I feel about its legacy.

Easy to pick on Eva? lol.
