Company wants employees to apply for a two week furlough, which feels like it came out of nowhere. I have to do the math but they’re saying we should receive 80% of our salary and it actually kinda scares me.

Today's worldmeter stats seem really good overall - deaths in most places seem like they are in decline (Canada excluded, but were are on a delay to most places).

The smell may be hell but the mist could leave you pissed.

Two Australian doctors are weighing in about the spread of the coronavirus “down under” — whether it can be spread through farts, that is.

During Friday’s episode of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s “Coronacast,” podcast, producer and host Dr. Norman Swan made a cautionary suggestion when it comes to particles of feces set adrift within a fart and the spread of COVID-19.

“No bare-bottom farting,” Swan advised about posterior pandemic panic, in a measured, mildly amused tone.

“Luckily, we wear a mask, which covers our farts all the time,” Swan said, referring to the protective aspects of pants, shorts, dresses, underwear and other garments. “I think that what we should do in terms of social distancing and being safe is that … you don’t fart close to other people, and that you don’t fart with your bottom bare.”

Meanwhile, Australian emergency physician Dr. Andy Tagg also floated the question via Twitter, asking, “So, can the bottom-based emissions of someone with coronavirus be silent and deadly?”

Tagg pondered whether flatulence itself is an “aerosol-generating procedure.” (His determination: yes.) A recent study, in fact, suggested a post-flush toilet plume could even be cause for concern when it comes to spreading the coronavirus via “aerosolized feces.” Plus, scientists have confirmed that fecal-oral transmission itself is an issue due to the presence of the virus in poop that is why health officials in Oregon and New York have even cautioned against oral contact with feces during sex.

Unfortunately, as Tagg observed, there is “not a great deal of research” available to come to a firm conclusion about the perils of passing COVID-19 while passing gas.

That’s all backed up by Dr. Aaron E. Glatt, a Mount Sinai South Nassau epidemiologist and professor of medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

“Studies have clearly shown that a significant percentage of COVID-19 patients do have GI [gastrointestinal] symptoms (alone, or in combination with respiratory or other general symptoms) at the time of illness presentation,” Glatt told The Post via email.

“However, there are no published data on whether flatulence alone presents any risk of transmission, although in a clothed person, it would be unlikely to be a significant route of transmission,” he said.

Where does that leave us? Tagg, co-founder of the medical education site Don’t Forget the Bubbles, suggests not throwing caution to the, um, wind. He instead proposes keeping your pants on and considering them part of your personal protection equipment, just in case.

“Perhaps SARS-CoV-2 can be spread [through] the power of parping — we need more evidence,” he tweeted, adding, “So remember to wear appropriate PPE at all times and stay safe!”

wait till America's heartland, Texas, and Florida swing wide open in two weeks

I agree with a video posted earlier in here though

they can shout that they've opened up all the want, but there isn't an on/off button for the economy

people have to go out and buy things, and if the majority don't, if they're just as worried and stay home, it's only going to be worse for the businesses who are now paying employees but seeing a fraction of business

58% of Americans are more worried about the virus than the economy

and that poll question is also not quite the same thing as asking, when restrictions are lifted are you immediately going to resume your life as before and put yourself and your loved ones at risk of death...some portion of people will give lip service to being more worried about the economy but when it comes down to it, given the choice they're not gonna risk it

widespread reporting of state reopening protests paint one picture but I'd question what percentage of people actually feel this way, we already know the whole reopen campaign is astroturfed and not a real US grassroots effort

when areas reopen you will see the curve un-flatten by some amount, but plenty of people will continue to operate under lockdown conditions

question is, is this good or bad for the election?

Trump is championing reopening, and if the highest number of deaths suddenly come as a result of reopening right around election time, does that push people who weren't gonna vote into getting him out of office

however what does a second wave do to the actual election/voting

old people vote Trump but maybe they'll all be too busy dying in hospitals

smart people don't vote Trump but smart people also social distance

just wonder how it will shake out

Georgia now up to 1,242 new cases today, which is sixth worst in the US today (Massachusetts numbers aren't up on https://www.worldometers.info/).

Yup, time to open up the gyms.

We're fucked, can't try and scare people as they are both tired of it and see the disconnect, can't not as people are dumb and won't even pause without. Hopefully it isn't as bad as expected and the distancing done thus far helps.

I honestly do believe it's time for less SKY IS FALLING reporting, it just plays into the fake news narrative. The only thing that will change anything are death numbers, and by the time it would change anything it would likely be late in the game.

USA aside, the numbers in Russia and Turkey aren't looking too good right now. They're both getting more daily cases than anybody else [other than USA and UK]. Brazil is continue to tick up, too, and they've got extremely limited testing.

Other countries further down the list to keep an eye on:

Saudia Arabia, Singapore, and Belarus. All three have percentage increases in daily new cases.

This is wrong and you're wrong. Tell the truth and never stop. The dead deserve at least that much.

I never said to stop telling the truth. That's actually what I want more of, and I think stuff like what the Boston Globe did where they printed 15 pages of obits is honestly the best way forward. I am really talking about all of the editorializing...the headlines are just dumb and shrill, if there are numbers let them do the talking.

The current state of cable news isn't helping anything. It really reminds me of the weather channel in disasters where there is not much actual news, just commentators freaking people out and looping whatever narrative.

surrender all hope and optimism

Maybe came off that way, but really am not fatalistic or anything? I am optimistic that we have avoided the worst-case scenario. I just wish people would like, wear masks.  :doge

thats one of the main issues i've been thinking about since this thing started. my pessimistic side tells me it's gonna be a bloodbaath for the dems cause like you said, they'll be the main ones taking this seriously and will be afraid to go out in large public spaces.

but we actually have one seemingly big data point that points to the opposite conclusion. the elections we had in WI had like around 200k more dems voting than reps. and that was with the worst voting fuckery in the country. maybe it's possible that despite the best efforts of trump, fox and their allies, lots of republicans are in fact, taking this as seriously as democrats, and contrary to what i thought, they may be just as, if not MORE frightened to go out and vote.

The most realistic scenario is that this all blows over by the summer with barely anymore deaths, and by November the rallies are of historical sizes packed into even smaller spaces as everyone is immune, and because all the voters spent their time in lockdown studying the issues and candidates they turnout at 95%.

https://www.wired.com/story/new-covid-19-antibody-study-results-are-in-are-they-right/

Quote
All of that might be moot if the testing devices used in both surveys turn out to be flawed. The results come amid widespread concerns about the accuracy of blood antibody tests—especially the rapid lateral flow tests like the ones used in this study. The Stanford preprint referred to a test from Premier Biotech, based in Minneapolis, but that company is only a distributor. The firm that makes the test, Hangzhou Biotest Biotech, was previously identified by NBC as among those recently banned from exporting Covid-19 tests because its product hasn’t been vetted by China’s equivalent of the FDA. A representative for Premier Biotech confirmed to WIRED that the same test was used by the Stanford and USC researchers. (On Monday, a USC spokesperson emailed WIRED a statement from Neeraj Sood, the lead researcher, acknowledging the test’s origins and noting they were exported legally, prior to the ban.)

At Stanford, the researchers performed their own validation of the tests and found only false negatives, not false positives. But, as a chorus of statisticians have noted (including one who concluded his analysis by demanding an apology from the researchers for wasting everyone’s time), even a low false positive rate would wipe out the significance of their results. Representatives for Stanford declined to make the researchers available for follow-up questions, including whether they planned to retest the positive individuals.
