Leaving microstate's aside, Sweden death per per population is now only behind the 6 hardest hit european countries. But in contrast to those countries the daily death numbers are seemingly still on the rise, while daily new infection numbers still seem to be limited by testing or are moving horizontally since three weeks. While the comparison isn't entirely fair (there are obviously regions in europe and the rest of the world that are off much worse) that's not looking good for now.

Still, we probably only can really judge the swedish approach when this whole thing is over. Compliance with strict measures seems to decrease rapidly in countries that have a lockdown in place after some time, especially as soon new infections decrease and some of the restrictions are lifted. I imagine lots of countries will get problems, maybe especially those that got lucky so far. So in the long term maybe the more self-responsible approach of sweden might still pay off.

Sweden‘s population density is also quite low, so to extrapolate their data is not really possible.

Second day without any new infection in my town.  :rejoice

My district had 8 more overall, but is still doing pretty well. Hospitals are planning to get some surgeries in that got postponed due the virus.
The extra diagnostic place they build within one school also got closed since there was no demand.

Mandatory masks from next week. Gonna be interesting sitting at the barber with a mask on  :doge

Well, this should benefit Sweden, at least in the shortrun. For now I suppose it's mainly Stockholm that is affected.

Those country comparisons are never entirely "fair", but sweden's approach is so different that it worth a look.

Sweden is somewhat unique in terms of human geography but you should be able to compare to Norway and Denmark if you do a comparison at city-levels no?.

Sweden, Norway, and Finland have the lowest population densities in Europe (excluding Iceland). Denmark is above average. That said, most of the populations in those countries live in urban areas, and have some of the highest rates of urbanization in Europe.

Deaths per million
Sweden: 192
Norway: 34
Finland: 27

Bonus:
Denmark: 66
Iceland: 29

"Boy, I sure do love living in Canada which is way better than our Southern neighbor at social welfare!"

(Image removed from quote.)

The difference is, I'm pretty sure the government underestimated the number of people who would not be covered by CERB, rather than willful neglect and I'd expect this to be rectified and post-dated now that it become a known issue (people were really just figuring out the details last week, and I just heard of the 1/3 not being covered about Friday).  Also, the people making up this group seem to be long-term unemployed and students.  Not saying that they are not in critical need of income but my guess is they are in less need than people who have an unexpected loss of income because of this.

from today https://www.ctvnews.ca/health/coronavirus/trudeau-says-help-coming-for-students-unable-to-find-summer-jobs-1.4883310

https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/cerb-covid19-benefits-trudeau-1.5523052

https://www.ctvnews.ca/health/coronavirus/pm-trudeau-updates-wage-subsidy-and-aid-for-students-will-attend-cabinet-in-person-1.4887926

Quote
The government has also announced temporary changes to the Canada Summer Jobs program. Now, employers who hire summer students can apply for a subsidy of up to 100 per cent to cover the cost, helping create up to 70,000 jobs for Canadians between the ages of 15 and 30.

The time frame for the job placements are also being extended until the winter, given some jobs will “start later than usual,” Trudeau said. The student hires can also be employed part-time, given many businesses have had to scale back their operations.

CERB (which requires zero income at the moment).

From the PMs speech today: CERB is being expanded to some lost income but not zero (people making less than 1000$ a month).  Essential workers are getting top-ups.  Also, people who run out of EI, and seasonal workers will get something.   Also something about artists, copy-right and CERB which I didn't follow.

Trudeau announces $9B in financial aid for students struggling because of pandemic

Students will be eligible for $1,250 a month from May through August. That sum can go up to $1,750 if the student is taking care of someone or has a disability.

The benefit is available also to students who have jobs but are making less than $1,000 a month.

Trudeau also said students who volunteer for the fight against COVID-19 over the summer will be paid between $1,000 and $5,000, depending on the hours they work.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/trudeau-students-financial-aid-1.5540814

So a lot of the holes in CERB have been patched now.

Well, singular superspreading events, actions of surrounding countries, general age structure, age structure of people being affected at first, health system, time of first major outbreak compared to other countries, "public behaviour", etc. all have a potentially big impact. We probably won't ever be able to perfectly separate political actions from structural factors.

I doubt that sweden suddenly ends up looking better (in the short term) if you take urbanization into account; Finland and Norway should be comparable when it comes to urbanization.

Just a little fyi for some american friends:

Norway and Sweden are prob very lucky as people went skiing in their own country in feb/march and not in Italy and Austria like Danes and Dutchies did. Thus low initial numbers.

Denmark did a good job containment. Holland is doing ok for how densly populated it is.

Sweden was lucky to start off with but their shit response has mafe them a laughing stock imho.

All that socialism in Sweden has been exposed as fair weather lip service. When it came down to the nitty gritty they chose money and personal freedom over collective health and people's lifes.

Northern frauds imho.

Ehhhh, what else can he say? The state probably doesn't have the funds to send money to everyone and the federal government isn't doing anything.

I mean it's not terrible advice. For people that were making close to min wage (retail, etc...) and were living paycheck to paycheck, delivery jobs right now are paying way more than that and are hiring in mass because people are needed to make deliveries.

I don't know, California just offered a state fund for people who aren't able to access the federal unemployment for various reasons (undocumented, in process of getting their green card, married to a person who isn't a U.S. citizen). I think it's fine criticizing a leader when they're not leading.

Edit: Coumo, just this month pushed a budget that cut medicare rates to hospitals in a middle of a pandemic. IMO, dude doesn't have the best interests of his people at heart because he's afraid of asking rich people more of their money.

Ehhhh, what else can he say?

"We hear you, we're looking into deferment of loans/etc." various other ways of reassuring a panicked public base instead of "lol just get a job and risk your life lol."

It's the same out-of-touch tone-deafness that Nancy Antoinette did with her $23,000 fridges full of $60 tubs of ice-cream to a base that makes 5% of that shit.

Somebody pointed out, I forgot who, noted that the current crop of Democratic governors are fairly young and are getting on the job training on what to do in a national emergency due to coronavirus. So it's actually important to note and see who's doing well, etc. Because in 2024, these people are going to run for the Democratic ticket. Same said for the Republican governors who is handling this well or poorly.

Ministers, we know you recognize that the layering of eachfix to the CERB, while vital and welcome, means delays in getting the most needed help to the people who are already most vulnerable to economic and therefore health insecurity. In the short term, our focus must be on ensuring the CERB is available for all who need it. When this immediate emergency has abated, we urge you to work with Parliamentarians and others to use the lessons from the CERB experience and the entire COVID-19 crisis to craft social and economic reforms and develop apositive legacy forall Canadians

Control group? LOL@ There were plenty of regions that had the coronavirus without social distancing in place yet, and the R0 is estimated to be between 2 and 6 (the Spanish flu was between 1.4 and 2.8). With stringent social distancing, a lot of countries have reduced the R0 to 1 or below.

IIRC the Strip is south of Las Vegas proper in Paradise so she doesn't have any control over the most important casinos.

A vaccine takes longer than people think. It won't be a year it could be 4 years.
In fact, when you have the vaccine you'd still have to wait out the 'Corona season' to see if it actually works.  :doge

Anyhow, our minister of health send a letter to parliament today.

Apparently the testing is not going well and only half of testing capacity is used. Because there's a strict bureaucracy that decides who gets tested or not.
So healthcare workers or people working in care homes don't get tested.

This is how the process works:
- A healthcare worker wants to get tested but they can't request a test themselves, this must be done by their manager
- The manager asks a doctor to assess if a test is needed or not
- The doctor sends a recommendation if a test is necessary to management
- Management decides if a test is necessary or not based on that recommendation

Workers are of course afraid to say they're sick (do I get fired?) nor do they know if they have to pay for the test themselves or not like for any other healthcare service (they don't have to but they don't know that).

The government is going to develop an "IT System" to improve this process.
Along with their contact tracing App, which after 7 vendors failed to present a viable plan will be built under the guidance of the health minister himself.

They learned a lot from the "Appathon" and finally have a clear objective. In 4 weeks they will present a plan and assess if they will go ahead to develop the App or not.
 :crowdlaff :girlaff

Also some cost cutting plans were leaked. Apparently none of that is necessary yadayada but it included mostly cuts in healthcare and education  :dead
Luckily our government just passed another 5 billion spending plan to reduce CO2.  :awesome
