There's a great quote in that thread:

Journalism 101: "If someone says it's raining & another person says it's dry. It's not your job to quote them both. Your job is to look out the fucking window and find out which is true." (source unknown)

The moment the American press forgot this is when the American democracy failed.
So 1941-1987?

Was thinking about it last night and I feel (shosta confirm?) like she's being leaned on pretty heavily by the seedier groups on the strip... The casinos aren't mob run but I doubt their presence evaporated completely. I dunno. :thinking

Things are starting to tilt towards the scenario I feared...

My fear is by the time we get a vaccine it'll have mutated into something else and we'll start this whole thing all over again.

And my biggest fear is that keeps happening indefinitely. But I guess humans will just have to cope.

Kids 10 years from now "Whoah, you actually went outside for *most* of the day?? Not 30 mins?? What was that like?"

"Well back then we had these things called jobs that required us to leave the house."

"Whoooooaaaaahhhh"

The new normal for humanity might be enforced physical isolation for >90% of every day.

Looks like it's just a product of high testing because of the low death total (assuming the death total is real). 37 people tests per case compared to say 3:1 for France.

The US curves are weird. Normally deaths should be delayed by about 14-20 days, but both curves have been mostly linear for 3 weeks with the deaths only 3-4 days behind the infections curve.

Obviously there are many variables at play here like increased testing capabilities and numerous mostly independent outbreaks. Still most curves in european countries look kinda comparable, that's seems to be different here.

testing rate btw is almost the highest out of the provinces, so long as that persists this is shaping up to be among the best glimpses at the data

percents have dropped a bit as testing ramped up some more since last picture
mortality continues to ramp up significantly post 60, but that hospitalization number starts going up real fast real early

That latest number might have been politely suggested for political reasons. I thought the 100k-200k one was generous because there was no time window attached but that's probably where it will end up (or be close to) by the end of May.

We've been at an average of 2k deaths a day in April under shutdown, so yeah over 100k by the end of May is very possible.

At the beginning of the month I was anxious that people would be prone to thinking it was "fake news" after seeing the projections revised downwards several times and the final death toll being around 50k.

Turns out I didn't need to worry about that scenario. ha ha ha fuck

It's like we've seen a reverse from "yea this is serious and it's gonna be tough" to "actually this is just a PR issue now." I shouldn't be surprised but man, the fact that they still think they can "fake news" their way out of this is mind blowing. Every day, people get more scared. And while a lot of people are desperate and want to go back to work...our economy is based on consumerism, not businesses being open. If businesses are open and nobody is buying shit...the economy can't recover. If businesses aren't selling shit, they have to lay people off again. And worse yet, if we don't get this under control and get hit with a second wave, states will have to shut down again. There's a clear incentive here to get this right. Unless you're utterly incompetent and running scared...like the president and his supporters.

on the one hand he's astroturfing a nationwide campaign to reopen things, anyone actually protesting are the highly motivated crazies, a chunk of his voting base

so if he doesn't set the stage for things reopening those who are like muh constitewshun, muh rights are gonna be pissed

but if he does reopen, the economy won't recover and there will be a second wave anyway, hitting right around election time

Yeah, doesn't make me feel great this is in my backyard. I hear a good % of these people are coming from other cities though, so sorta my backyard, sorta not.

But I dunno if people get how insanely fucking hot it got here yesterday. Like bad combination of So Cal heat & Shelter at Home = lots of people without AC who aren't going to be miserable and will go somewhere like the beach to cool down. The summer is going to be soon in So CA and it's going to be really really bad for minimizing virus spread unfortunautely.

Plus we're gonna start getting those So Cal fires on top of this all.

We literally had like the coldest week in years in So Cal a couple weeks ago and now it's summer 94F. So Cal has no spring/fall anymore, it's winter and then it's summer.

With the heat wave, lack of AC across SoCal, and general exhaustion of being inside I really think it is going to be a losing battle to keep people from the beaches. Mind you they did a good job in Santa Monica and Venice where it is still not allowed, but with Ventura and OC reopening, you're just gonna get people from LA going there. And since LA hasn't had a single day without an increase... I expect numbers in those counties to start going up again.

Went for a run today. Alone mind you. I'm the dude that will shift from the sidewalk to the road (we talking side streets here, not busy streets) if I see I'll be passing someone. Keeping it classy. 6 feet and all that jazz.

Well I make it to a 4 way stop and I decide I'm going to rest for like 30 seconds. I'm heaving a little, catching my breath. Some white performative nitwit rolls down his window and barks at me, "you're not a professional runner. Go fuck yourself!"

I always wondered how you found this place Nin.
From what I remember I was chatting with a friend about the good ol' days of NeoGAF and that got me in a nostalgic mood to Google.
I remembered Opa Ages and The Bore and the likes from back in the day and thought, whatever I'll just sign up to whatever still seems active.
Although I admitted the place looked a bit dead it was more alive than other GAF offshoots known to me.
After all most of us moved on to Twitter only to disappear in the sands of time.

Then suddenly my account was approved weeks later (I had completely forgot about signing up) and I recognized some peeps from the 'old site'.
Just about 10 days later the goblin shower incident happened and the rest as they say is history.

Although I signed up on ResetEra I found this place much more to my liking so I posted here more frequently.
Got in just in time to watch Etoilet and Optimus destroy themselves.  :lol

I've also been unbanned from NeoGAF after years but I don't feel the need to go back.

I'm at little :comeon at the language of the tweet, several national offices of statistics have started releasing numbers and their assessment within the express framing of the pandemic weeks before the Financial Times "looked into" the "highly suspect" stats. All the more eye rolling the FT was explicit in their decision to use the "deaths in hospitals" for a number of countries even when other tallies were added by official authorities so they're obviously well aware of the difficulties of having real time, perfect statistics.
