Also, excessive US deaths are going to be seen as fake news.

But that's how this thing is going to play out. We're going to keep making mistakes, learn from it and then adjust according to that.  There is no "one size fits all" plan that makes sense for a country of people. It has hit us all differently and in varying degrees of severity. Some states might have to re-close certain businesses and demand masks for everyone, others won't.

So, the "big picture numbers" are always going to look bad because as these "hot spots" keep shifting around the country you're going to have the steady drip of new cases/deaths. You're already seeing that now as places like Texas and Arizona are the hot spots and places in the Midwest/East coast are in decline.

We won't see states wanting to re-close until it hits NY levels of bad and by that time you have that, it's months of 1K+ deaths just coming from a single state.

The IFR estimate for the flu is 0.01% (instead of 0.1%) using seroprevalence studies and official death counts. This same methodology used for COVID-19 usually gets an estimate IFR of 1%. See my post here: http://www.thebore.com/forum/index.php?topic=46908.msg2872322#msg2872322

Even if absurdly low IFR estimates are used, COVID-19 is 18 times deadlier than the flu.

As if Orange County CA can't get any worse. We still going to be in the middle of VERY BAD RONA TIMES in mid-July.

Disney re-opening made sense in Shanghai where Covid is under control and people will follow protocol like masks. It's going to be a total clusterfuck of covid super spreading in the USA.

I find it concerning that Huntsman had to take two tests to confirm what he knew he had.  Why doesn’t it catch someone with full blown symptoms right out the gate?

Sounds like the first negative test was sent to Huntsman by mistake. The 2nd one was actually his.

Edit:

Never mind, somebody messed with it.

This guy figured it out ...

Quote
During a hearing on whether to declare racism a public health crisis in Ohio, a Republican state senator referred to “the colored population” and questioned whether they get COVID-19 more often because they do not wash their hands as much.

During a discussion with Angela Dawson, director of the Ohio Commission on Minority Health, Sen. Steve Huffman, a doctor from Tipp City north of Dayton, said, “I understand that African Americans have a higher incidence of prior conditions and that makes them more susceptible to COVID, but does not make them more susceptible just to get COVID.

“We know it’s twice as often, correct? Could it just be that African Americans – the colored population — do not wash their hands as well as other groups? Or wear a mask? Or do not socially distance themselves? Could that just be maybe the explanation of why there’s a higher incidence?”

To get tickets to the Trump rally, you have to sign a waiver that you're potentially exposing yourself to COVID 19 and the venue/Trump admin aren't responsible

Makes sense. Trump has already abdicated responsibility for COVID-19.

Just got off an hour call with my dad and was a big fucking fight. He's bringing all our employees back to work (IN ORANGE COUNTY) on Monday.

The reason is because the system we've been using has been 2 people at the office like 30 feet apart doing in-house necessary stuff, while the other 2 people work from home because they have kids and stuff.

Well basically the 2 people working at the office have gotten in such a bad pissy mood because they think it's so unfair that they have to work real work while the other 2 at home are barely working and just hanging out at home. One of the 2 people at work is taking vacation time in 2 weeks leaving the other all alone and they claim they're overwhelmed and it's very unfair and the people at home need to work at the office.

Note we're paying hazard pay to the people at the office to try to balance that, but apparently the growing resentment between our employees has gotten too much so after one of the employees at work went off on my dad, he backed off and agreed to call the other 2 at home employees in starting monday.

We've put up plexiglass along everyone's stations on 3 of the 4 sides, kept every station at least 10 feet apart and implemented policies like masks required and disinfect shared areas like the copy machine and files, etc...

But I just feel no matter how much protection we put in place, bringing more and more people into the work environment who are out and about in their own lives and live with families who do the same is just making it a matter of time before covid goes around the office. And it's a family matter because my parents both work there and are in their 70s.

Anyhow I basically got told stfu and too bad and got a lot of flak because I'm not there since I'm working from home so I have no right to say anything because I have no idea of what the day to day is and don't participate in it. I get guilt tripped a lot because of stuff like that but it doesn't change my opinions.

So that's how I spent my evening.

I've already cut off my social friends because they're crazy and the day Disneyland is opening they've already been making reservations and meetup events for disneyland, california adventure, etc... they planned a vegas trip for August, etc...I just can't deal with interacting with them anymore and I don't want to fight them about their bad ideas so I've just cut them all off. So I'm back to having like 3 friends and my mom as my only social circle.

Maybe I'm overly paranoid, but it just seems like it makes sense that when things are getting worse and worse with Covid in my area that erring on the side of over-precaution is better.

idk I'm just so angry and unhappy and anxious. If we all make it through Covid I'll have to basically rebuild and repair a lot of my life.

Most recent chart here, to compare with.

(Image removed from quote.)

Another chart update, cases have slowed and resolved by a large margin. Whether that stays the case hinges on the people.
Testing pretty damn thorough.

Under 60's fatality rate, under 0.2 percent. Bit worse than a bad flu season.
Over 60s, oh boy, oh boy oh boy. No accounting for comorbidities either.

Gee, respiratory droplet vector, what if everyone slapped covering in front of their pie hole. Surely the massive reduction in inhaled droplets would correspond to significantly reduced transmission rates.

---

BuzzFeed article so take with a grain of salt, but things are looking pretty, pretty pretty good bad:

https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/tomgara/economy-recession-coronavirus

Quote from: Buzzfeed
On July 31, the $600 federal unemployment payments going to unemployed people every week will end, and there’s no sign they’ll be replaced with anything nearly as generous. In fact, many Republicans want to replace them with nothing at all — and there’s also little sign that another round of one-time stimulus checks will get mailed out. So income for tens of millions of households is likely to nose-dive in August.

[...]

Few seriously expect the US economy to recover as fast as those bills come due; the federal government’s own projections expect unemployment will remain frighteningly high well into next year, even as people return to work as the lockdowns are lifted. Many companies will only rehire workers as quickly as consumer demand returns, and in labor-heavy industries, such as restaurants, entertainment, and travel, nobody expects things to go back to normal anytime soon.
