The response has been shitty here and at the old place since the very beginning, because far too many people care more about satisfying their own ego than they do about the truth.

Johnny countered her abuse claims with his own from the very beginning. Her claims were disputed by police from the very beginning. And from the very beginning she was the only one with a documented history of abuse. That should have been enough to give people pause, before rendering their judgment.

I have trouble identifying with the concept of just removing yourself from the context of somebody's bad behavior. It brings up a few different scenarios but the most meaningful ones to me are workplace tension. I think this is the most stressful environment to struggle with someone's negative or oppressive presence because you are obligated to spend time with them. Often there is a power disparity at play as well, which the article briefly acknowledges, but I don't really consider its advice realistic at all.

A lot of people don't have the luxury of making waves in a professional environment. A lot of people's lives would collapse underneath them if they were even briefly unemployed, so doing anything that puts your job at risk is not an option. It gives lip service to a couple different problem solving methods (speak to the person privately or tell their boss) but this sort of thing is better geared toward addressing incidents rather than pattern of behavior or ideological offenses.

My wife has had problems in her department for the last couple of years. They make racist, sexist, and homophobic comments all the time. She has a lot of anxiety about being associated with them and this behavior. It is ideology she finds depressing and threatening. It's an extremely uncomfortable environment for her to work in but due to the power dynamics at the company they are not people she can complain about. They are people who have been here for a long time - some of them decades - who are very comfortable at work and assume everyone around them thinks just like them. So they are brusk, mean, prejudiced, and self-indulgent. But she cannot afford to quit her job so she's just aggressively pursued other positions in the company to get out. She has finally gotten another job, but only after her fourth attempt. It took a long time.

Her strategies for coping, which she developed out of necessity, were:
-Leave the room or shared space whenever possible. If everyone is standing around someone's desk and an uncomfortable dialog begins, she leaves.
-She makes short verbal rejections of the commentary like "I don't want anything to do with this" or "that's a horrible thing to say."
-She has to be mindful that she is not responsible for other people's behavior and she is not to blame for things the people around her say and do.
-She tries to make her own opinions and kindness known to others as a point of contrast to the rest of her department.

But I guess when I read the article I don't get the feeling that it's about this sort of tension or behavior. It uses words like oppression but it doesn't seem to acknowledge the reality of being oppressed and that kind of "assholery." It defines these kinds of people as "someone who leaves us feeling demeaned, de-energized, disrespected, and/or oppressed. In other words, someone who makes you feel like dirt." But it feels like the majority of its commentary only applies if the person's behavior can be described as "being a jerk."

Which is, honestly, easy to deal with. I don't think many people struggle with navigating social or professional environments when somebody is a jerk. Someone being a jerk doesn't leave me demeaned or disrespected or oppressed. These are feelings I associate with prejudice and exploitation. Nothing in this article suggests to me these coping mechanisms are especially helpful in dealing with these kinds of people. The best advice buried in here is to "not give a shit." I don't know if I need a whole article, let alone a whole book, to tell my and my family to grow a thicker skin.

In short, this seems useless and needlessly vulgar to me. 🤷‍♂️

You know how everyone likes to laugh (or be disgusted) at Xenoblade 2 character design?  Hope you didn't watch the superbowl half time show, this could almost be DLC for the game.  Everything has to keep getting racier and racier I guess (don't forget the twerk off).   At least she has human proportions I suppose, unlike Xenoblade 2.

I think it certainly doesn't help the situation imo when one of the most watched television shows does something like that.  I'm sure people look at that and use it as a bar in some way as what's acceptable.  But it's not just the superbowl, you see that kind of in a lot of prime time media, especially anything to do with modern concerts.

Perhaps the setting matters more than I'm giving it credit for too.  Having a random playable character looking like that going in to battle is a million times worse than having someone who's putting on a show do it, maybe it's not even really an issue in a performance and I'm reading too much in to it?  It's certainly more cringeworthy in a game setting than in that concert, the concert seems more acceptable.
