We spent several hours playing through the solo guitar part of Rock Bands career mode, getting about a third of the way through it. Players who are pretty good at Guitar Hero will notice one thing almost immediatelythe lead guitar sections are considerably easier than those in Guitar Hero games. While the first few song tiers are obviously geared toward getting players situated with the game, even the songs that appeared much later on posed little challenge. Were far from guitar godsthough were pretty goodand even on the expert difficulty we cruised through songs, getting four- and five-star ratings on the first try. We only hit one point where we had to enter power mode, and we probably could have squeaked by without it.
With that out of the way, heres the important partwhich cannot be stressed enoughRock Band is not Guitar Hero. If you plan on getting Rock Band just for the solo guitar parts, youll probably be a little disappointed on the outset. Thats because the song selection caters to the four different instruments. Guitar Hero has trained a lot of players into thinking that guitars are the only instrument in the mix, and that if your fingers arent twisted into pretzels by the end of a song somethings wrong. In Rock Band, some of the guitar parts are going to be kind of boring. Thats because the bass player is grooving along, taking the spotlight. Other parts might focus on tricky drum sections or showing off the vocalists chops.
One thing Rock Band has going for it is Harmonixs ambitious download strategy. While the current song list contained on disc is geared toward band-oriented gameplay, the company has plans to release songs and entire albums directed toward guitar parts. So shredders who feel like their best licks are going unused in the standard career path can take consolation knowing thatif Harmonix delivers on their promisestheyll be able to show off their moves in earnest eventually. In the meantime, the song selections and guitar gameplay are a great counterpart to Guitar Heros digit-spraining action. And even if you dont get blisters after a gig, youll still feel like a rock star
what's the difference between the ps2 and ps3/360 version besides the price and the 360's wired guitar?
downloadable songs? nice.
have they said which ones, or is that unkown at this point?

Harmonix art director Ryan Lesser has told GamesIndustry.biz that the company is doing everything it can to ensure forthcoming title Rock Band is affordable for consumers.
"I think when it's just rumour and no one has anything tangible to hold on to, people can be afraid - but the fact is we're very conscious of it, and we're doing our best to make it awesome and affordable."
Lesser dismissed rumours that the game will cost between USD 150 - 200, which emerged after a forum poster claimed to have taken part of a focus group for Rock Band.
"Seeing as one of my specific orders was. 'Don't let anyone know anything about pricing,' I can't imagine that was true," he said. "Because of a lot of reasons that I can't talk about, but we're far from releasing prices at this point. So I wouldn't take any of that stuff too seriously."
The Guitar Hero II guitar works with Rock Band though, right?
I've seen people play this game in public twice:
1. E for All
2. Campus Tour
It has to be one of the most embarrassing things to watch people do.
For the two pre-release people that had issues with their guitar - I'd wait until Tuesday before sending your guitars back. I believe there may be a title update on day 1 that makes things happy for you again. Such is the life of retailers breaking street date and making life hard for us.

Also, be happy you didn't buy GH3 on the PS3. Apparently the Les Paul doesn't work with Rock Band on PS3.
I highly doubt Best Buy is getting 156 units of the bundles, because it's a logistic impossibility.
First off, there aren't that many bundles out there. EA has scrapped together all they could to put as much hardware out there day one and even then, they've stated they'll be unlikely to meet demand. Best Buy will get more units than most retailers and I've implored folks to go there first to attain them, but it's going to be more like a 2:1 ratio and not a 25:1 ratio.
Second, as someone who has 20 or so total bundles sitting in my backroom (for PS3 and Xbox 360), those things are huge, and even a megastore like Best Buy would have difficulties backstocking 156 units. It'd take up a quarter of their stockroom!
The guitar is a bit different from the RO models, but it's growing on me. The buttons are far and away better. The strum bar is much more "strummy" and less "clicky." I find that if I just casually whack it with my fingertips, I do fine. If I hold it between my thumb and forefinger (like I do the GH guitar) I tend to miss notes more often.
So the 360 bundle has no wireless guitar and the PS3 version has framedrops? Kinda hard to make a decision for someone that doesn't care about achievements.
do the frame drops affect gameplay at all? i'd hate for it to fuck with my timing.
Wow, the presentation on this eclipses Guitar Hero. I just did "Maps" - what a shitty ass song.
Mine is still unopened. I promised myself I wouldn't crack it open until I got off my ass and finished all this housework :-\

Your strength is not to be denied! :bow
Yea, I'm really surprised you bought it demi. Basically every review and person pointed to it not being a great single-player experience. I would think the GH series would suit you better. And good luck hoping they don't get more bundles out, because right now it doesn't seem all that hot. At least going by my Best Buy. :lol
Not even with the new ribbed anal squiggly remote sleeve?
playing music together is for feggits like the partridge family
Jon Bon was good in U-571
hahaha not really
Still haven't opened my RB. I may wait until tomorrow evening and see what the ratio of broken to unbroken strum bars is before I take that chance. If it's too high, then I may just take it back or sell it on ebay and rebuy whenever they fix their shitty hardware.

I thought it was genetic, just like I'm genetically superior to you at all music in all forms
Is your strum bar getting any worse, demi?
He has no 360 because he's a poor slaving single father of two, so the only time he gets to do anything fun is when he comes down to visit.
drinky you could paint the microphone pink and sing into it widemouth style
Also this game rules haters should back off before they get their FACES ROCKED OFF
Prole - yes, any usb mics work as well
professor didn't you just buy a snazzy new usb headset
you could be singing Mississippi Queen by Mountain right about now
you know what i mean
Also they made pretty much all the load screens trivia-style, like GH's bonus track loading screens. I prefer this. The DLC also had included trivia. Apparently Sting got that name by constantly wearing a yellow-and-black striped sweater?! crazed
if by "starlets" you mean that flaming poof jimmy stewart, then i agree. same goes for a pre-op kat hepburn.
GHIII was totally a decent warm up for this game
what DLC are you getting? I got the T. Rex song (Bang a Gong) and it's rad. I'm holding off til next week's Bowie pack for additional songs, I think though.
I'm taking this fake Rock Star thing to the limit
Work is suck. If it did not enable me to pay for rock band i would have no reason to be here
God it's been ages since I was dying to skip out on work and play a game! RB4LIFE :rock
Playing Knights of Cydonia in GH3 reminds me that if they announce Muse as Rock Band DLC, I will buy the game immediately.
A lot of the songs are so BORING to play - The Who's song in particular. There is this 3 minute gap of NOTHING. I'd imagine that's a solo for the bass player.
Eel -
If you find a duffel bag that works well, let me know.
Agreed on interface and guitar.
There's a button code to unlock all songs (disables saving though). GameFAQs
What's the big deal if the drums are dented?
Getting ready for some big ebay disappointment, probably.
Also, Bloodwake, purchased songs and song packs start appearing in set list as well.

As soon as I get the game, I am going to buy the Who pack and the Nevermind pack.

PS3 OWNERS DON'T GET DLC UNTIL THURSDAY!?!?!!
WHAT THE FUCK
man heroes is such an awesome song to play, i'm glad i bought it for the xbox 360

Is Bowie not on ps3?
I didn't actually buy Heroes because DLC is horrible, horrible horrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrible - I get rid of games so DLC becomes w0rthless
I picked up the Bowie pack earlier today on the Playstation Store. Moonage Daydream is still my favorite Bowie song, but those covers are actually pretty good. Heroes was a lot of fun.
I also beat easy mode and have moved on to medium difficulty. I've never played a guitar or Guitar Hero before, so I'm adjusting to adding in the blue button and relying on my pinky finger.

Bunch of DLC and Lego RB songs confirmed. :o
The Lego tracks can be exported into RB2?
I will now rent Lego RB and pay for the export key DLC.
Why are you guys so giddy about that? Were you actually worried about that not happening?

Even money says it will be a code in the game only when newly purchased, like the "20 Free Tracks" offered with RB2, and every subsequent Track Pack, e.g. AC/DC Live.
Freezepop - Science Genius Girl
No way Zeppelin would have a song on RB.
Songs from musical comedy Flight of the Conchords may be heading to Rock Band, assuming what comedy duo Bret McKenzie and Jermaine Clement said on The Emmys' red carpet wasn't a joke. Frankly, we can't tell.
"You know what? There's going to be three songs on Rock Band," McKenzie, sporting a moustache, told a suited interviewer (video on Kotaku).
"I'm serious," he added. "That's serious," echoed Clement, grinning slightly.
"What are they?" asked the interviewer. "Don't know," replied Clement, deadpan. "Yeah, don't know," echoed McKenzie.
And that was that.
Each episode of Flight of the Conchords features a song of some sort, whether it be a rap about robots, a ballad about the most beautiful girl in the room, or funky jive to let us know it's "Business Time". It's brilliant.
:hyper
:bow BUSINESS TIME :bow2
Downloading the Backspacer tracks for RB now. :-*Yeah, but if you play RB2 I believe there's no maximum fans, only a greatly reduced number of "new fans" if your total fans has already hit the max for the difficulty level at which you play. RB1, you're just out of luck.
I admit to playing it on easy because I just want to have fun with it, but why is my fanbase being capped at 260K? Is that the game nudging me to a higher difficulty?
Um, yeah. Stop sucking you loser. How is Easy fun? Ugh.I'm too lazy to look at your gamercard, but have you even played Rock Band? And if so, why are you such a killjoy? I'm having fun playing stuff. :maf

What's the difference between Band Hero and Guitar Hero? Are they taking the drums and vocals away from GH?
What's the difference between Band Hero and Guitar Hero? Are they taking the drums and vocals away from GH?
Band Hero is "family friendly" Guitar Hero. The tracklisting is much more pop-oriented.
The words "Lego Rock Band" make the pessimist in me conjure up images of plastic yellow midgets bipping and bopping to a setlist of Hannah Montana, Jonas Brothers, and Blink 182 in front of an audience of screaming tweens and a pile of dead parents who have blood running out of their ears. But given that the Lego brand of video games has a history of turning would-be gore and murder into family-friendly coins and hand-slapping without sabotaging any of the fun, I didn't need to worry.
Though Lego Rock Band sits well within the framework of its franchise by catering to kids - or more precisely, people with kids - it's careful not to dumb down the solid gameplay of Rock Band. The setlist does have corny pop songs like "Ghostbusters" by Ray Parker Jr, "So What" by Pink, "Kung Fu Fighting" by Carl Douglas, "In Too Deep" by Sum 41, and "Aliens Exist" by Blink 182, but it also chooses energetic and catchy tunes that have wider appeal like "Ruby" by Kaiser Chiefs, "Let's Dance" by David Bowie, "Walking on Sunshine" by Katrina and The Waves, and "Fire" by Jimi Hendrix.
As you might expect, a healthy portion of the 45-song setlist are guilty pleasures or songs that most of us will only sing if we have had somewhere between three to seven beers. (A case-in-point fill in the blank: I will sing "_______" before I sing Pink.) Since kids have short attention spans and probably won't understand the intricacies of Rush or Dream Theatre, the lack of hardcore rock songs is understandable. There's even a toggle for the short "radio edit" version of a track so that your hyperactive fourth-grader doesn't get bored by the sixth chorus of some song by The Police.
Any downloadable track for Rock Band that passes through a content filter can be imported into Lego Rock Band - you don't want little Timmy playing Nine Inch Nails next to grandpa on Easter. If you would rather play on Rock Band, you have the option to turn Lego Rock Band into what is essentially a 45-song track pack for a small licensing fee. As always, most pre-existing peripherals for Rock Band and Guitar Hero will be compatible, and thankfully, there doesn't seem to be any plans for a plastic guitar made out of brightly colored bricks (...oh, what have I done).
Several features have been introduced to make Lego Rock Band more accessible to children, notably the Lego credo of not being able to "die". Players who miss one too many notes won't fail out but instead lose all the studs (or points), the in-game currency, that they have earned in the song so far. But to be gentle, they can recover up to all of their lost studs if they hit the notes in the recovery phrases that follow. In addition to Super Easy mode where players only have to strum the notes at the right time (you can hold down any button), the option to automate the kick pedal for the drums has been added not just for kids with short legs, but for those with leg disabilities.
More substantial, the traditionally straightforward and staid World Tour mode has been sprinkled with Lego cheer in the shape of adorable avatars and cut-scenes. Ninja, pirate, wizard, a werewolf with a pegleg - your character can be outfitted from everything within the fantasy realm of rock awesomeness where unicorns with glam hair gallop to power chords and apocalyptic thunder... or something like that. Using studs, you can purchase new clothing, new furniture, and new vehicles to get to new venues (no word on whether you can be Iggy Pop's or David Bowie's in-game Lego avatars, but one can dream).
Among the revised World Tour setlists are Rock Power Challenges, story-based tests that have your band channel the power of rock to solve a problem or defeat a boss like, say, a giant, angry mollusk. These challenges are the one exception to the "no fail" rule, serving as a reminder to children that video games are supposed to be tough and unfair and everything frustratingly wonderful we have come to love about them.
Lego Rock Band doesn't seek to conquer the world of music games but to share this world with the people who will hopefully come to learn and appreciate its riches. Let them be children, let them have fun. Check out Lego Rock Band when it snaps into stores November 3, 2009.

Cool, doubt it will export if it didn't export in GHWT.
But I want to know what the fucking Talking Heads song is. I bet David Byrne in his fat suit is going to be the last lego celebrity.
Yes, Jimi Hendrix's estate didn't allow his songs to be exportable in GHWT to GH5. What makes us think that all of a sudden their going to allow RB to do it?
Cool, Jimi Hendrix in Lego Rock Band, perhaps you lack some reading comprehension.
Yes, Jimi Hendrix's estate didn't allow his songs to be exportable in GHWT to GH5. What makes us think that all of a sudden their going to allow RB to do it?
So you weren't implying that Rock Band tracks won't export because GH doesn't export, only the Jimi Hendrix song based on its behavior in a different game. Out of all those bolded sentences, you were referring to one song without mention and only mentioning a different game series. You're not nonsensical, just incoherent.
Who knows what contractual situation exists between the estate or label handling Hendrix' catalog, and the vying for those rights between MTV/EA/HMX and Activision? There may be exclusives, or even time-limited exclusives. Who knows why 3 songs couldn't be exported from RB1 to RB2? Do you? I don't.
Which is fucking sad because they used to be in Sony's pants and they made better games back then.
I thought Sony only allows updates on Fridays.

You have to pay a $10 export fee in addition to the $50 game, but ALL the songs export, even Hendrix. And the export is a one time use. Renters annihilated. :-\
You have to pay 60 to export it, in all. And, if you sell it after that, and lets say your HD fails or w/e and you need a new one? You have to buy the game and pay it again because it's only a one time use code.
I meant more if your gamertag is banned or w/e, you can't re-use it, you have to buy a whole brand new copy for the code.

The best thing about Lego Rock Band is that Hendrix DLC will eventually show up in the future.
L: RB has about ten songs I'd actually want to play. :-\ (insert Drinky comment about how that's ten more than Beatles: Rock Band)We will never be able to export Beatles tunes ever.
HMX, please make RB3. And allow me to export RB1, RB2, and Beatles Rock Band songs. Thanks.
If Guitar Hero Hendrix songs were $1.99 each, why would the Rock Band equivalent be $2.99? ???For the hell of it. I just went along that thought process because it seems like Lego Rock Band's export is expensive because of that song alone.

Harmonix and MTV Games owner Viacom has said sales of the Rock Band franchise are improving - though not at a pace that meets expectations.
Rock Band hit margins at the company's Media Networks group during its third quarter ended September, although Viacom said that it expects the franchise to finally break even or become "slightly profitable" in Q4 if sales are good through Christmas.
"The economics of our Rock Band franchise are improving, though not as quickly as we'd like," admitted Philippe Daumann, CEO of Viacom in a conference call to investors.
The next two months will be crucial for The Beatles: Rock Band in particular, said Viacom, as the company prepares to to pump more marketing dollars into the game during the busy Christmas sales period.
"We had a great launch of The Beatles product," said Daumann, but "obviously at this time of year we await the holiday season to begin as the month of November unfolds. We will start putting in more marketing dollars together with our retail partners behind that product."
"We just have to be cautious given that we are entering, over the next several weeks, a retail season that will depend on how consumers spend their money generally. So we have to be cautious about how it is unfolding. Meanwhile we continue to manage that business with a close eye on inventory levels and with a greater focus on software."
Industry watchers are split on the future of the music genre, with high-price entry points due to bundled hardware meaning most games become profitable at a slower rate than normal videogames.
Poor sales of Rock Band and rival Guitar Hero games were blamed for a lacklustre retail performance during September in the US, and the latest DJ Hero title from Activision – released last week – debuted in the UK charts at 20, after pre-order sales failed to meet expectations.
nobody's buying because they're sick of all the releases. HMX no different than Activision.

Yeah, I love that.

I don't think Harmonix deemed Suck My Kiss to be appropriate for the younger crowd. :lolIf I want to play Hair of the Dog in Lego Rock Band I should be able to. They could have included an "Adult" mode.
The DLC isn't rated, at all. They gave up doing that. (It would cost thousands per song to do)What's funny is that Lego Rock Band has a warning stating specifically that DLC is not rated. :teehee
Hey archie, how those bitter tears taste? :lol

green day kinda sucks, but I think their songs would be fun to play in RB. not $60 good, but good. everyone knows most of them, and the separations are pretty meaty.I think EA Marketing had a big meeting with Harmonix, showed them the sales of the DLC charted against the sales of full-priced new titles, particularly waving their laser pointers at the Guitar Hero series and purchasers of Beatles RB who aren't particularly Beatles' fans. Then they shrugged and pretended to let HMX come to their own conclusions... VIOLA! Green Day Rock Band.
would buy for $20.
Has anybody else bought Rubber Soul? It's my favourite album but I'm pretty poor atm and most of my friends arent here for the holidays (which other than drums/singing is the only way I can still enjoy the game). Peppers seemed a little half-assed :-\
"Thank you. How does one acquire it? Is it a code from a promotion, or just available off the Marketplace? I didn't see anything there yet.
Was it my imagination, or did someone mention upcoming free DLC for Rock Band in another thread? I can't find anything about it on the wikipeja."
It was one adver-dlc of a coldplay knock off group. Can't rememebr the name.

It should be available for download in the Music Store unless they took it down.
Ringo songs are utterly fun to sing. What's up with that?

Honestly, it's not worth it since half of the songs are just in the budokan arena.
Honestly, it's not worth it since half of the songs are just in the budokan arena.
How do you confuse Shea Stadium for the Budokan arena?
Plus they would've played Rubber Soul songs in Budokan not shea stadium anyways, so it's not my fault the incompetants at HMX fucked that up.Budokan Hall (Nippon Budokan Hall) in 1966
not the complete shea stadium setlist, fuck why can't I edit.Because you're a careless poster with little respect for the verbal diarrhea you inflict on every other member of the board. At this point I'm playing a game with myself to see if I can hold out from shitbinning your posts until you get banned again.
Isn't that just the label for their storefront? Since it's all cross game compatible?
While it's nice to get thrown some DLC of Psychedelic Furs and Roy Orbison, if there was a way to get more White Zombie and Rob Zombie, I'd pay the full price for a disc-based title and be stoked to get some more Achievement points for it to boot.
I guess the key is that if an artist is famous enough and their body of work is large enough, it can support a full retail product. Which leads me to wondering why there isn't a full Rolling Stones Guitar Hero (too old? they've got other tracks. licensing fee prohibitive? anyway, I'd buy it), or why there isn't a U2 Rock Band. For now I'll just be happy that there isn't a Jay Z or Fiddy Rock Band/Band Hero title where all the vocals are "Talky Parts."
It's also surprising that Activision hasn't gone out on a limb to do a Led Zeppelin Guitar Hero with a talented cover band aping the legendary licks. Isn't the issue there the handling of the master tapes?
EB Endess Setlist, lets do this
It's been downhill since the Queen pack. :(
It sporadically gets good and bad. I mean, for a while there they were rocking some awesome DLC so it's about time they release some popcountry or some other bullshit I don't give two fucks about.Look at the gap of time between the last two Nirvana and Foo Fighter packs. It's like they're rushing out sure sellers instead of keeping up surprises.
PS: Since queen, there's been a White Stripes pack, the Nirvana songs everyone knows from Nevermind, a Them Crooked Vultures song (which I still haven't downloaded, stupid me). Plus, I will probably download Simon and Garfunkel for the fuck of it.
Stroke 9
As long as I get all the Sub Pop stuff (Postal Service, Shins, Conchords, Sleater Kinney), I'll be happy.I am -so- looking forward to The Postal Service. :hyper
RBN is gonna be awesome.

I like how they charted the sax to vocals. :lol
I don't care what people say. Off-instrument charting makes the games more fun.
I think you're missing how it's the last half of the exclusives off of Country Track Pack disc. Not a single new song this week.Ah. Yeah, I have no interest in country of the last 30 years, so I noticed The Gambler and just, er, stood pat, so to speak.
This Christmas-break lag fucking sucks. It better get good soon. They're out of lazy updates.

It is a given that all the Harmonix band games will import, but I still think it is a waste of time and resources. One thing I liked about RB was that they didn't spam games every 6 weeks and made nearly everything DLC. Lego and Green Day have shaken my faith in them.Meh, Lego Rock Band is a track pack, just a bit too expensive but with 1000 'cheev points. :hyper
I was alright with Lego Rock Band, I viewed it as the yearly iteration of Rock Band. Plus, it was a bunch of fun songs that I imported into the main game.

But all your songs can't be imported into LRB because Harmonix is run by distinguished mentally-challenged monkeys now.

At least add 107.7 The End and C89.5. It would broaden your taste.
But how long will that sate the thirst of the metalhead? A week? A month at most before they bitch some more.

Playing RB2 for the first time after a year is depressing. :-\ @ failing songs I used to gold star.I hear you. I normally sing, but I do OK at guitar/bass if I practice at all. Recently I picked up the guitar controller for the first time in a couple months. Just... embarrassing.
I haven't played RB2 since Christmas Day, and this DLC isn't inspiring me to. I don't really need ANOTHER Megadeth album, sorry but I don't.
# Songs by soul great Otis Redding are coming to Rock Band next week. Original master recordings of “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay,” “Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa (Sad Song),” “I’m Sick Y’all,” “I’ve Got Dreams to Remember” and “Love Man” will be available as a track pack or individual songs for Xbox 360 and PS3, and individual tracks for Wii.
All You Need Is Love is coming out next week*

I still don't have Beatles. But I managed to snag two of the albums DLC for free through their Twitter. You are a mean man.

Ah, I wondered what the update was for today.
So sorry for being a short bus candidate, but this is the one that requires XNA/Creator's Club membership, and the membership in RBN, right? And normal peeps /may/ eventually see the popular stuff trickle out from it?
I'm still miffed that their system sucks so much for non-360 owners. nice "network," jackasses
Next week's DLC:

RBN is out right now for the normals (aka you can buy songs), but I don't know if it is available in Japan. You should be able to use an American account to buy songs if it isn't available in your region.
I'm with Patel on this.
Every other developer this gen has said, "MS sucks for user-created online. That's why we can't have user-level sharing". Yet RBN which is all about user content is ONLY on the X360.
Either MS money-hatted this, or more likely the programming team at Harmonix sucks. The PS3 versions of RB might sell less, but they still sell a lot and definitely enough to support RBN.
EA to distribute Rock Band 3
After initial doubts about its involvement in future releases, Harmonix has confirmed that Electronic Arts is due to distribute MTV and Viacom's Rock Band 3 this Christmas.
Earlier in the year Viacom had said that it was still in negotiations over a future distribution deal for its Rock Band series, after slower than expected sales hit the franchise and its big Beatles tie-in failed to meet expectations.
"Harmonix is developing Rock Band 3 for worldwide release this holiday season," announced Harmonix on the game's official Facebook page. "The game, which will be published by MTV Games and distributed by Electronic Arts, will innovate and revolutionise the music genre once again, just as Harmonix did with the original Rock Band, Rock Band 2 and The Beatles: Rock Band."
Electronic Arts had said that it intended to release less third-party titles through its EA Partners business due to low margins, although along with a new Rock Band deal it has just signed up digital titles from Hothead and Klei, and 38 Studios' RPG Project Mercury.
The music genre as a whole slumped in 2009, prompting Viacom to admit it would be more selective with the content it releases for future Rock Band games.
Both the Rock Band and the rival Guitar Hero series' are now focusing on selling digital downloads for the games, rather than new iterations of the expensive plastic peripherals that accompany the titles.
Green Day Rock Band info:
Comes out June 8
$60 with a $10 export fee
47 songs
The Green Day DLC works with the game and takes advantage of vocal harmonies (this gives me very high hopes for current DLC supporting harmonies in Rock Band 3)
Will (hopefully) flop
U2 wants their own game but released a statement they want it done like the Beatles, so you can guarantee Harmonix is chasing that. (They've had their music in Singstar and such, so they're not averse to all music games)

Bulls on Parade, Hair of the Dog, Rust in Peace, Nirvana, old Alice in Chains, maybe some Paul McCartney, Tom Petty. Queen Pack obviously, if you don't have that.
I don't know what else other people would consider "must have" since I mainly just like the 80's pop stuff that are easy to sing along to.
So what? There's a market for that, especially for how popular the game is. Christian music is one of the most successful avenues in music today, whether you like it or not.But they marketed it as just regular rock. They didn't use the word Christian at all. Like they're scared of it. They can't man up and just accept it.
It'll get back to the usual next week.

I will buy a few. Glad to see them finally coming. I'm still wondering the details on this. Mainly WHY it's 5 a week and why it's not just regular DLC, preventing the Wii from getting it.
Hi Guys:
I just wanted to take a quick second to clarify how RBN tracks will be rolling out on the PS3. As HMXHenry just confirmed, we'll be launching 5 great tracks tomorrow from the RBN catalog in the PS3 RBN store. These tracks are awesome. Get excited.
Because of the way submissions work on PS3, we will only be able to release songs when we update the normal Rock Band DLC store (currently Thursdays). Furthermore, because of the way the submissions process works, we're currently capped at 5 songs per week. We're working hard to expand the number of songs we'll be able to do each week, but for now you can expect 5 songs a week, every week, plus your normal DLC releases.
We're using a few different criteria to pick these select tracks. The best selling tracks play into it, but we're also balancing that information with songs that we know are in demand from the core Rock Band users. Keep being (politely) vocal about what songs you want to bring over! We have a long lead time for submissions, but we'll continue to tweak what we bring over based on what we're hearing from you!
To be clear, the reason that we can update in real-time on Xbox 360 is because Rock Band Network on Xbox 360 is built on the XNA infrastructure that allows users to submit their own content, with the sales and distribution of those tracks managed by the XNA backend. That infrastructure doesn't exist on other platforms. We're looking into ways to bring as much stuff over as possible, but there are practical realities that aren't in our immediate control. We hope you understand.
I can only ask you to believe us when we say that we're limited in what we can currently do, but we want to bring as much music to you as possible. We're working on it and we hope you enjoy the songs we do bring in the meantime. We want your feedback, especially if the discussion is civil and informed.
Otherwise, Rock On!

Development of Rock Band 3 began immediately after the September 2008 release of Rock Band 2, says project director Daniel Sussman at Cambridge, Mass.-based Harmonix.
As work continued, the music category's slide in sales made the design team deepen their focus. "We saw a kind of staleness in terms of game-play innovation," Sussman says. "Really, the main focus of Rock Band 3 development was finding new ways to experience the music and actually doubling down, if you will, on our investment in compelling game play.
"We are adding a new instrument (a 25-key, fully functioning MIDI keyboard) and we're adding a whole new mode, which is designed basically to answer that staleness factor."
The result, he says, is "an experience that is both accessible to players who are just getting into this thing, and builds something for the hard-core player who is maybe a little bored with where music games are."
Sussman and several key members of the Rock Band team (Harmonix senior designers Sylvain Dubrofsky and Dan Teasdale, and public relations gurus John Drake of Harmonix and Jeff Castaneda of MTV Games; you can see them all playing the game in the accompanying video) recently demonstrated Rock Band 3 for USA TODAY's Game Hunters and offered a test drive of the new keyboard controller, as well as the game's new authentic Pro mode aimed at helping players develop skills usable on real instruments.
"Everybody who wants to keep playing on the instruments they already have, we have enhanced new features and new gameplay for you," Dubrofsky says. "It's up to you to decide where you take this."
More on the advances for Rock Band 3 (due for the holidays for PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and Nintendo DS):
•Better story. Design your own characters and session musicians from improved character models and watch their story unfold throughout the game. Your band members are seen getting into the van to go to a show, and practicing as well as performing. They even appear as you choose songs to play. "It is a really cool way to make sure you are always in the narrative no matter which mode you are in," Teasdale says. "The entire game is essentially one story of your band."
Everything you do earns achievements in the goal-based career mode. "Previously our career modes weren't really about getting better as a Rock Band player, it was about investing time," Teasdale says. "We developed this entirely new career mode based around unlocking achievement-like goals to show your progression through the game, and also give you incentives to get better.
"We have hundreds and hundreds of these goals across instruments and gameplay modes and across (downloadable content). It is a really great way to finish Rock Band in your way, based on your skill, and not on some predetermined path of songs."
•More fluid gameplay. Players can jump in or out of songs without interrupting a song already in progress. They can also change instruments or difficulty settings during a song without pausing. "It's a really cool way to get rid of that friction that players have when they are in a party situation," Teasdale says.
Another party-friendly mode, "road challenges," is described by Teasdale as "taking Rock Band 1 and 2's band world tour (mode) and merging it with Mario Party. We tried to find a way to get the core experience people had playing the band world tour and the things they really enjoyed, like getting the van or getting random set lists, and putting that into a setting that you can finish in an evening instead of a week. So now we have all these tours which are actually you going on a tour of the East Coast or touring across the world, and you are finishing that in three hours or whatever time you think you have to play."
•Revamped song-filtering system. With the Rock Band library expected to grow to about 2,000 songs by year's end, it has grown too big for simply scrolling. With the new system, "you can say, 'only show me songs in Rock Band 3' or 'only songs under three minutes' or 'Eighties metal songs from my (downloadable) collection,' " Teasdale says. "It's a really cool way to take your full library down to a manageable list of songs."
Not to be forgotten, the keyboards' addition — along with carrying over the three-part harmonies from The Beatles: Rock Band and new Green Day: Rock Band games — means that "you can play as a seven -player band," Teasdale says, "which is an amazing experience."
•Rock Band Pro. This new music learning mode lets players develop real-world music-playing fundamentals for keyboards, guitars and drums. More realistic music notations replace the standard color-coded notes during gameplay. For guitar, numbers flow down the screen along six guitar strings, telling you where to place your hands on the neck and when to strum.
Two new guitar controllers in the works have actual strings where you strum; one is a full-sized, fully functional six-string Squier Stratocaster from Fender. "It can tell where your fingers are based on technology in the neck and the bridge of the guitar. No buttons," Drake says. "While you're playing it, it feels exactly like playing a real guitar," because that's what you're doing.
The other is a Fender Mustang Pro controller from accessory maker Mad Catz with a field of buttons in each fret. As your fingers compress the smaller non-colored buttons on that guitar's neck, your finger positions are represented in the game's display. "You can go from plucking single notes to power chords and bar chords, we have crazy stuff like tapping and slides," Dubrofsky says. "If you ever had any aspirations of connecting with the music in a deeper way ... you are really going to like Rock Band 3."
For drums, three new cymbals are added to the standard four drum pads, and you are forced to play the correct cymbal at the right time. "It really immerses you more. You feel more like a drummer," Dubrofsky says. "It's not only for expert levels. You can come in on easy and actually play Pro drums. We have all the different levels established. It's actually really fun. You are playing up on the high hat or down on the snare, and it feels more like a kit than ever before."
On keyboards, Sussman says, "we're actually utilizing the full two-octave range that the keyboard controller has. Everything that you are playing, whether you are playing on easy or expert, is accurate musical information. The track looks like a real keyboard track, and you are playing notes on the keyboard that if you were to step away from the game and were to play on a real piano, they would be the right notes."
Pro players can use the mode for private practice or incorporate it while others play the game's standard arcade modes. "You can be an expert keys-player playing with an all easy band, no problem," Drake says.
Rock Band 3, which adds keyboards to the music game setup, will feature keyboard parts in most of the planned 83 songs on the game disc when it hits stores this holiday shopping season.
"There's this whole other world of music where keyboards plays a prominent role that has been largely neglected (in Rock Band games) because of instrumentation," says Harmonix CEO and co-founder Alex Rigopulos. "The introduction of keyboards ... gives us access to a new world of content."
See our full coverage including a video of the Harmonix developers playing the game here.

About the game, Rigopulos says, "if you are a really casual player, you just like to play at parties or whatnot, we are offering a bunch of great new seamless party play. If you are looking for something new, of course we are adding the vocal harmonies and the keyboards, which lets up to seven people play together and is a helluva lot of fun in a social party context.
"If you are someone who is looking for a deeper challenge either because you are an expert player looking for the next level of challenge or because you actually have musical aspirations, there is the Pro game play (mode), which is really going to start to close the gap between simulated music and real musicmaking."
Readers, jazzed about Rock Band 3 for the keyboards or new Pro mode?
Looks hooooot. Love how they're doing keyboard. How it shifts to the left and right.
Also interested in the high end guitar. They're probably gonna reveal that at E3.
Hopefully they have it all in a bundle. I think RB3 is a good time for me to refresh all my hardware (still have RB1 drums)
...but I bet it's gonna be expeeeeensive.
Drums are already too hard for me. Adding new targets to hit is not exciting for me. Hell, I want them to add SUPER-EASY mode like in Lego Rock Band, where the kick pedal is automatic.

I can do drums on hard but it is still a bit of a struggle for me only because of the foot pedal. Keyboard shouldn't be too hard to pick up assuming I don't need to be doing things with my feet.

Oh man.
The keyboard and game is a confirmed bundle?
Nah. Just the guitar. There are a new set of symbols (that will hopefully work this time) that will retail for $40.
And yeah this game is going to be fucking expensive, but I'm still going to buy it all. :'(
How do the Cymbals work, do they attach to existing drum sets? I have the Rock Band 1 drums so I'm wondering how this is all going to work.
Also, $150 for just the guitar is fucking crazy. I hope MTV markets Rock Band 3 and the pro mode correctly. Otherwise I see a lot of kinda real guitars sitting on shelves for many months.

Next week is Miley Cyrus DLC. Good jon, Harmonix. :lolspoiler (click to show/hide)It doesn't even have Party in the USA, fail.[close]
I thought it was 2000 by the end of the year. Regardless, I hope they are holding the good stuff for post RB3. :P
Posted in another thread, but it fits here too:

They say they'll have 2000 songs by the time RB3 comes out. Currently at 1600+. So that'll be 400 songs of fail.I'm pretty sure they know what their final song format is. I'm guessing that each track will be, or has already been, shipping with the additional gameplay information for RB3 compatibility.
Raffi and Barney DLC next month.
Nickelback? I'll admit to liking their songs. You can mock me now.
I just like "Rockstar" and "Animals".Nickelback? I'll admit to liking their songs. You can mock me now.
I wasn't aware that they had more than one song. I thought they just recycled it:

But there's a whole album of RHCP and several singles on DLC, why would they take away Dani California and Give It Away? I remember a lot of people were certain Train Kept a Rollin' wouldn't export from the first game, but it still did, even after GH Aerosmith. Meh, whatever, we'll find out pretty soon, I guess.
Well, if they can license DLC to be usage with any future RB title, then they need to license disc-based songs to work with any future title as well.
Songs not exporting
ACDC, Journey, Metallica, RHCP, Soundgarden and all HMX songs.

Good jon not being able to relicense in house songs, Harmonix. :dur

didnt they do Visions? fuck HMX music
I agree with you that it's silly they can't get their own employees' bands to agree to bundle with the rest of the songs covered by the export feature, but there's likely something more to it than "Golly, the VP of HMX was really surprised when the employees didn't agree to have their work featured for free."QuoteSongs not exporting

Well, dude, you're seriously oversimplifying the usage scenario of a very, very complicated area of copyright law. It's not just a matter of what the artists want or what's good for the fans, or even what the game developer or publisher can afford to pay; making deals with the labels is like dealing with Satan or a nasty dragon. You can be sure of only a few things: it's not collaborative; they don't care about you, long-term viability, or growth; you're getting the short end of the deal.
Hey guess what; some of your DLC isn't going to work anymore!
Such as Heir Kommit Alex by some german distinguished effete fellows and also Rock N Roll Star by Oasis!
Harmonix, the new Neversoft?
Yeah, nearly certainly so.
My wife put her childhood/adolescent piano lessons to good use and kicked ass at the keys last night.
That's terrible; there's no indication that that is tapped and not actually strummed, wtf.
BTW, there's a few songs that don't work now from RB1:Dear Activision,
Dani California
Black Hole Sun
which means we will probably lose
Spoonman
Give it Away
I really don't understand why you guys are putting me on ignore for saying that the chart for that song is incorrect ???
...And sadly, I'll probably be on vibrating pre-order wait for Guitar Hero: Red Hot Chili Peppers whenever it is announced.BTW, there's a few songs that don't work now from RB1:Dear Activision,

I don't have you on Ignore yet, darling. I will say that you're being pretty bullheaded in this thread, after your antics in SA forums' RB thread apparently got you suspended there.
You're always free to make your own choices, voice things however you want, but if it's eliciting a negative reaction in the conversation's other participants, you can choose to charge on ahead and damn the consequences, or you can reconsider your tone and approach from a different angle.
I'm aware of the "Pro" mode in Rock Band, and I've seen it referred to as practically (n.b. not "literally") teaching players how to play the song, and that the controller for it can also be used as a real guitar. I believe the goal is to bring it closer to the experience of actually playing the instrument, just as the drum kit is practically the same as a real drum kit.
None of that flies in the face of what I stated earlier: RB allows me to be in a pretend band. This new controller and the new mode will get me closer to that feeling, sure. I might even learn some, er, fingering positions from playing on Pro. But I don't expect it to turn me into a guitarist.
She also wants actual notes instead of keys on the screen, but Harmonix ain't doing that.
theres a 3 pack of free Doors DLC, you have to go into the music store and get it before tonight.
Make sure you look for them in the in-game music store, they don't show up in the normal PS3/360 store.
I do. I'm still hoping it's not raped and dead in a gutter somewhere.
GH5, GH:VH, Band Hero, Warrior
Beatles, Lego, Green Day, RB3, Country Track Pack, Metal Track Pack
so, I'm thinking of picking up LEGO Rock Band just to get some more tracks ... you can get a new copy of the game + export key for about $25 total.
chrono, I think you picked it up - any thoughts on the overall track list (or anyone else for that matter)? There's at least a dozen tracks I know I want, so I figure cost-wise it's a wash vs. regular DLC.

It's a decent set of tracks; some are really fun. Some you'll wish had keyboard support. If there are a dozen you want, you're in good shape.
The game will be hard to tolerate if you're into RB3 solidly. RB3 has masked their loadtimes so gracefully, and Lego Rock Band takes all the crap from RB2 and magnifies it with unnecessary trips to the Lego base station and the Garage. :maf
Guess who's a Hall of Famer (http://www.rockband.com/users/jackfrost2012). :smugspoiler (click to show/hide)The judges would also have accepted "not chronovore" as an answer. ;)[close]
I think the game just knows about that extra little bit of effort you put in to rock Maps just a little bit harder.

There's been several 1600 point track packs. And then the AC/DC retail one was $40. :(
Edge of Seventeen this week. :rock
Had a party tonight, Rock Band 3 was trotted out. Couldn't figure out how to get ALL the parts going, for 7 players total, but we did get 3 vocalists, 1 guitar player, 1 keyboard-er, and 1 drummer all going at once. FINALLY unlocked the "Bohemian As It Was Meant to Be" Challenge met.
That actually sounds about right. The system only has four slots for registering controllers, as displayed on the Ring of Light™ -- so I suspect drums + keyboard + bass + guitar are your four.
Coincidentally, a loading menu hint popped up saying that you can "disconnect the vocalist's controller to play with the full seven players," but since I'm mainly trying to score vocals, it's not ideal.
a bunch of modders have been updating the GHWT songs for RB3 format, meaning, proper pro drums, correct charts that aren't buggy, lip syncing, good lighitng and animation. It's amazing and really really well done.

theres the list of songs done so far and the planned ones. Really easy to install custom songs into RB3 on a non hacked console. All you need is a USB stick and follow these instructions:
1. Copy Rock Band 3 Song Cache to Memory Stick
2. Download the custom from that spreadsheet
3. Download USBXTAFGUI
4. Drag and drop the song into the folder where Rock Band 3 Song Cache is
you're done.
I don't think I'd mess with it, just from a fear of "you hacked your save data so you are bannz0red" standpoint.
Hey Chrono, did you buy the Def Leppard DLC pack? I've got a free 360 code for you if you don't already have it. I won it via Harmonix's FB giveaway.

Really?! No F-F-F-Foolin'?! That's very cool of you! I don't have it yet, and was waffling on it. Thanks! PM or email me!

This is where we will post whenever there is news. I was spurred to make this thread because I just saw
"Black Hole Sun" - Soundgarden
(snip)
I can't believe how many hours we have sunk into this game, and how much fun it still is.
We've witnessed some of the power-ups and know several of the tracks that will be available in Harmonix's upcoming beat-match title, Rock Band Blitz. Now we can share with you a few more confirmed tunes as well as the release date and price.
In additon to songs from artists such as Iron Maiden, Living Color, and P!nk, Rock Band Blitz will also feature the following tracks:QuoteAvenged Sevenfold – “So Far Away”Rock Band Blitz, and its 25-song setlist that may be imported to Rock Band 3, will be available on Xbox LIVE Arcade on August 29th for 1200 MSP.
Fun. ft. Janelle Monáe – “We Are Young”
Kool & The Gang – “Jungle Boogie”
My Chemical Romance – “Sing”
Blitz's setlist is meh, but at least it's only $15. I wonder if they're going to stick us with a $10 export fee.
i may have to buy an xbox now.
fuck
Moreover, since I'm on PS4 this generation, I'm wondering if there will be any way to get my DLC from 360 onto it. Theoretically it's all just licenses which could be tracked on their server, but realistically I'm pretty sure I'm screwed.
Verrey is quick to point out, though, that the only way to guarantee you'll get a plastic drum set when the game launches for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on Oct. 4 is by pre-ordering the game. He's almost apologetic. He says he knows gamers are rightly skeptical of preorder come-ons, and he understands why people would choose not to. But these instruments are costly to manufacture, and the best way for Mad Catz to figure out how many to make is to look at pre-orders.:holeup
They're pricey, though. The game, a guitar controller, a drum controller and a microphone will set you back $249.99. That's nearly as much as the consoles you'll play them on.
Who else picked up Rock Band 4? Chrono, you have a copy heading to Osaka?I went PS4 for this generation, so my 360 instruments won't work. Nor will my DLC. So I'll be purchasing once I get an XBOne sometime next year. :'(
Played two songs last night. It's pretty much Rock Band. And that makes me happy.
