so where are the updated impressions :(
Quote-Graphically, the game is a mixed bag because of the uneven and highly variable texture work. The models, however, look great and are highly detailed. The frame rate runs at a reasonable pace (30), with occasional hiccups and drops (~15-20). This might be because I am playing it on 1080p. I'll try 720p and see if it makes it run smoother.

hope your dad is okay :(
You're fully of shit, Borys. You know damn well that I was extremely hard on the PS3 version of CoD4 for its framerate skips. I had a hard time dealing with the performance of GTAIV, couldn't stand Heavenly Sword due to its nearly unplayable framerate and was even annoyed by the drops in stuff like Uncharted (which are extremely minor in comparison). Why would you think I'd simply excuse something due to the fact that it is a PS3 game?Quote-Graphically, the game is a mixed bag because of the uneven and highly variable texture work. The reason I tend to be pickier on the PC is simply because you can modify settings. I end up with an almost OCD-like situation of constantly fiddling with settings until I find something that delivers great visuals at a perfect framerate. It becomes frustrating and it's my own fault.Quote-Graphically, the game is a mixed bag because of the uneven and highly variable texture work. It doesn't really make a difference. There's always going to be a game that requires fiddling. Guys, get that PC gaming shit out of here. This thread has been derailed enough already. This isn't GAF.so there's more locales than what's been shown? thank god. I'm honestly hoping there's a bit more color to the game in other areas.
I played a lot more today. I don't want to much for anybody, but I am really glad that the game does not take place entirely in the Middle East. :hyper :D
Shouldn't it be "THE OFFICIAL CUTSCENE THREAD"?

hold on, i thought you said you ran all your PC games at 720p?...because I use Very High settings. At 1360x768 or 1280x720 (depending on the display I'm using), Crysis runs very well at extremely high settings. If I use just "High" it does run much faster, but it also looks much worse. There isn't a PC on the market that can run Crysis at the highest levels of detail while maintaining a solid 60 fps. Virtually every other game (the ones that aren't poorly coded) runs perfectly.
--why-- aren't you hitting 60fps for crysis?
I know it makes a difference. My point was that I'm not currently bothered by the performance of my current PC but I have complained in the past. The reason I state 60 fps is because I LOCK the framerate at 60 fps. I don't allow it to go higher. 60 Hz + v-sync on a CRT is the smoothest you'll get. The motion handling is fantastic. If I disable v-sync I can get framerates much higher than 80-95 fps in TF2, but it looks much worse than a solid v-sync'd 60 fps. Again, I'm VERY happy with my current PC performance and really have no complaints. It doesn't really make a difference. There's always going to be a game that requires fiddling. I can pretty much run everything on my PC at 60 fps at the moment except Crysis. The reason I tend to be pickier on the PC is simply because you can modify settings. Wow, you're being arrogant, now. It does make a difference. Hopping into the video and system settings for two seconds to max everything out isn't what I'd call fiddling. And your computer isn't that good if all you can churn out is 60fps. I get around 80-95FPS on TF2.
Will I be somewhat happy, or will I make a long and venomous rant thread on Evilbore about how fucked up it is?
hilarious lol spoiler that i just saw on a live stream of the game:Holy shit.spoiler (click to show/hide)after the giant robot battle, ocelot pretends that he's having a heart attack like liquid did, down to the "FOX... ...DIE!" thing from MGS1
then he laughs and runs around like a crazy old man and snake takes a hilarious pratfall from rex's mouth and he goes chasing after giggling old ocelot, who runs off just in time to jump onto a giant mountain sized submarine, Outer Heaven, (think Arsenal Gear, but bigger and bluer)...
...WITH MOUNTAIN RUSHMORE ON TOP OF IT, WITH BIG BOSS' HEAD INSTEAD OF WASHINGTON'S

and honestly, this is the best installation screen ever.
I got to play some. This game will appeal to Metal Gear Solid fans, but it's not that fun or anything.

Got my PS3 MGS4 pack yesterday night, yeah I waited on line... there weren't too many people there, only 3 other people were picking up the console/game combo. One dude had a Ryo Hazuki shirt on, another guy had a Fox Hound tattoo... I also saw a lot of people with Metallica and Slayer shirts, what's with videogame nerds and 80's metal? I asked some of the other people what games I should get with my PS3 and they were all like "all the other games suck" :lolquite the opposite for me. There was this huge sony cigarillo there talking nonsense about the ps3.
So yeah, now I'm at work and it's pissing me off b/c I wanna be home so bad and playing... this day is gonna go by SOOOO SLOOOOOW!!!

he was talking about how all ps3 games have uncompressed audio and texture so he always gets multiplatform releases. so then i told him that most don't and most actually perform worse than their 360 counterparts and I brought up the fact that GTA 4 had a lower resolution than its 360 counterpart. He said "Yeah, but the PS3 renders the resolutions natively. Everyone knows that's better" omfg :'( I did discover that hardcore Sony fans seem to be faux gangster distinguished mentally-challenged fellows. Awesome.

It was weird, a lot of the people waiting outside were actually big SEGA fans (ironic considering what MGS2 did to the Dreamcast), and they were only interested in MGS4 and not in any other PS3 game. No real gangsta looking people there, nor was it high school emo kids like if it was a Nintendo launch, just old fashioned video game geeks. I was in good company.
First ten minutes definitely lacked a good bit of gameplay. Did Snake simply crawl under a truck and a cut-scene was activated? That was like five seconds of gameplay. Anyways, the section where Snake was heading North whilst evading the Metal Gears was pretty neat. I just can't stand these torturous cut-scenes anymore.Yeah, I was like what the fuck. But there's a good amount of gameplay after that

I saw a ton of people walking out of GS with MGS and a PS3. Probably more people doing that than just picking up the game. They sold out of PS3s.Six out of the seven in line at the wal-mart I went to were waiting on the bundles!
anyway...FUCKING WOW. Just. Everything. Wow. So worth the wait.

Can we equip the mask early on, and keep it on during cut scenes? Have you tried it? (The ninja mask)
And can we equip a young Snake mask or do we have to look at Grandpa all the time?
from these anecdotes, it may just be a system seller. The act install videos change every time. I started two games and the first had a gameshow clip which was hilarious and the second had a Praying Mantis commercial. The second time I started it was a documentary on different octopus species
Aside from being completely floored by this game, that live action interview with David Hayter was so random...was that the Act 1 install? Reminded me of something out of a David Lynch movie...the interviewer really needed to be Isabella Rosselini.
and now i attached a shotgun to my m4. :lol
Bought an HDMI cable from Best Buy, gonna order one much cheaper off Newegg and then return this to Best Buy. Almost bought the Blade Runner blu-ray and was looking for PS3 game deals but Uncharted, Ratchet and Folklore were all 60 bucks. Still, I can't wait to get home!!!!!

temporal aa is the most disappointing part. that shit blows.
the best looking console game? i played the mgo beta and unless the textures have drastically improved or are completely different in mgs4 i doubt that claim is true.
plus temporal aa is flatout balls.
Edit: it's not the res i'm disappointed in. it's the type of aa they decided to use. it looked bad in dmc4 and mgo so i doubt it'll look much better in mgs4.
the textures aren't hot. the effects and models are seriously beyond what i've seen in other console games.

i would say Assassin's Creed but knowing you AA and your hate for Ubi, i dare not to.
but seriously, it's not about picking one game, there are many, many games with better graphics than MGS4, uncharted, gears, cod4, AC, lost planet...etc.
and i am talking about graphics not fucking artstyle or fucking cutscenes (which MGS4 excels at both no doubt.)

yes, because CLEARLY AC MAXED ON YOUR PC IS STILL NOT BETTER GRAPHICALLY EVEN WITH IT'S GORGEOUS ARTSTYLE.
and you are not? do i need to fucking remind you of haze?
take this shit elsewhere.seriously.
Here's the million dollar question. Can the cutscenes be paused in any way? I know you can skip 'em, but if I actually want to know what's going on am I going to have to hide somewhere all day to play it, for fear of interruption?press start.

it'll pause them and the option to skip is actually in the pause menu. the first time i saw the x and l1 pop up i was afraid to press them because i didn't want to skip.
QuoteSo do you guys think MGS4 is worth $500? I'm kinda hesitating purchasing a PS3 next week now heh. $500 is a shit lot and could pay off one of my credit cards
well there are more games on the PS3 that are worth while.
But yeah, i'd drop the $500 on the debt first.
yes, because CLEARLY AC MAXED ON YOUR PC IS STILL NOT BETTER GRAPHICALLY EVEN WITH IT'S GORGEOUS ARTSTYLE.
The gameplay in the first few sections is weird. Seems like you could just Rambo it completely, but then stealth is encouraged. But why would you need stealth in the first place if the PMCs are just mindless soldiers? Although it's extremely fun from a gameplay standpoint, it also seems a bit arbitrary to have to use stealth.don't let me hurt you now.yes, because CLEARLY AC MAXED ON YOUR PC IS STILL NOT BETTER GRAPHICALLY EVEN WITH IT'S GORGEOUS ARTSTYLE.
yeah, I mean, I figured you didn't get it all, but this confirms it. only on the internet.
I'm loving this game. It feels way more fluid than previous games. The presentation is ace. Can't wait to sink in tomorrow night.spoiler (click to show/hide)Re: the Beasts cutscene. WOW.[close]
For everyone complaining about the overly long codecs, you can skip or fast foward the codec message. I find the Fast Foward function useful when Otacon is re explaining himself for the fith time within the same message.Yup yup. I've been using the tranq gun more and more. Too bad I pretty much ran out of ammo in
Also, I was using the M4 alot at first but I've reverted to using the Silenced Tranq Gun. It feels way more fullfilling to take on things more stealthily.
Stop spinning TVC and tear this bitch apart, be a good xfag now.
I'm a MGS taco as well and it's nice to see the gameplay is good.Stop spinning TVC and tear this bitch apart, be a good xfag now.
I'm something of an MG fanboy. Metal Gear was one of the first NES games I got as a tyke, and for the next decade I wished they'd make a sequel.
So far, I love the gameplay in this one, but the story is kinda ehhhh so far. Keep in mind I'm not very far in but. . .spoiler (click to show/hide)So far having blast from the past appearances by Naomi and Meryl feels very fanservicey. In both cases, there's really little to no reason why these specific characters had to come back, other than to give fan boners. It just felt, I dunno, forced. And the general "The Patriots are bad but Ocelot is AGAINST them but we have to kill Ocelot" storyline is so obvious. No matter how many layers of good/bad/war rhetoric it's rapped on, it's still not as "deep" as it presents itself as.
I'm early enough in that I reserve full rights to do a 180 on my opinion of the storyline, btw. For the record, I didn't like MGS3's, either. This, however, is the first MGS game since the original that is legitimately fun to play, so far. The first game was novel at the time, making it easy to see passed the clunky controls. In this, for the first time we can throw stealth to the shitter and go ape shit Rambo effectively.[close]

Anyone, in-game camera? Where is it?
hmm I think you can get a camera by using the mk2 during the briefing
it might be upstairs where sonny is or maybe behind the computer desk by otakons right
wait, stealth in the shitter? RAMBO TIME? color me interested.
wait, stealth in the shitter? RAMBO TIME? color me interested.
they got rid of every MGS3 aspect Ihatedwas not a fan of....
- eating crap every 25 seconds to stay alive.....
- switching camo outfits every 45 seconds to blend in.
If your trying to go stealth, its important to stay crouched down or lieing down. Make use of any weapons with a silencer. The Tranq gun is perfect simply because if another guard stumbles on the sleeping guard, they'll just nudge them awake. If the same guard came upon a "Dead" guard, well, they'll phone HQ and they'll go in Alert mode.Bluetsunami with the smackdown!
The beaut of this game is that there are so many different pathways to get to point A to point B. Make use of Night Vision even during the day, you 'll be able to see low air ducts that you can crawl through. I've even used tight alleyways (you have to press against a wall and go in sideways).
Make use of the Solid Eye too (more specifically, the radar). You can see your zone thats perceptable to the enemy. The higher your camo rating, the smaller that zone gets.
Wait, IGN actually gave this one a 10/10? That's sort of surprising. Is the review spoilery?
Does anyone know how the stress system works? The game barely explains it.
My initial concerns would that they would be extremely intrusive but you're very correct. Both this and NG2 have issues I've overlooked and forgiven because of the franchise name. If it were anything else, I'd be calling it out as you've said.
This makes me a dirty hypocrite. :bawl
After Act I, so far I am kind of "meh" about it. For reference, MGS1 and 2 are amongst my favorite games ever (both would make a top 10 list for me), but I thought MGS3 was incredibly disappointing. The problem with MGS4 so far for me is that its frankly been a little boring - something that a MGS game should never be. The graphics are ace, it runs well enough, the production values are great (aside from Hayter's ever worsening Snake portrayels), and the gameplay/controls, while taking some getting used to, are quite good. So it nails all those areas. But after the first act, its the plot/story that is letting me down. The middle east isnt exactly the most enthralling locale, either.
congrats wrika!
NOW ENJOY THE AWESOMENESS!

Mine is like a hair dryer, specially during cut scenes. I guess it's because it's in a semi closed space and MGS4 is really pushing the system. Seriously, this was going way beyond 360 absurd levels.

I'm assuming that post was copy pasted from a Mondain Xenosaga appreciation thread.

Wow. I am finally not alone! My PS3 is louder than my relatively quiet 360 90% of the time. Which seems so odd to me, as people always complain about how loud their 360's are, and praise how quiet their PS3's are. My 360 maintains a constant level of noise, which isnt really intrusive. My PS3 boots up quiet as death, but without fail, after its on for 10 minutes or so, the fans (or whatever makes all the noise) start kicking in and it gets really noisy. Neither my 360 nor PS3 are in even remotely closed spaces, and I position both upright.

You'll find out soon enough (in Act 2) but one thing I've noticed, when Snake is holding his back, that means hes having back pains. Relieve this by using a compressor. That'll drop the stress level down :p
The mask is like the face paint in MGS3, it allows for 90% Camo in certain conditions. I also faced the first boss, it was awesome.Hell yeah. I just kicked her ass and now I'm doing the tracking which seems tedious so I'm going to go get something to eat.
You know, it's times like this I honestly wish I had a PS3 for this one game. One of the face camos made me think of you, Crushed. :-*
can you start killing militia and join the PMCs?
You can put them to sleep though!can you start killing militia and join the PMCs?
The PMCs will always be your enemy and its in your best inerest to befriend the militias since you'll be behind and in front of enemy lines with them (thus making sneaking even easier). If you kill militia, then they become your enemy too.
Alright, I bought the MGS trilogy and I'm not sure which game to start with. My two buddies say play 3-1-2. Is that the way to do it for the best experience?

Which one? I know there's quite a few.
I'm really enjoying the stealth stuff in mgs4. It just works in this one. I'm still at act1, the game feels REALLY linear, I don't think i'll play it again tho.
It's fun but eh, its a one-time-only experience.
holy fuck you guys are all being huge bleeding cunts in this thread.sales faggotry isn't really welcome in ANY thread on this gaming forum outside of the one designated NPD thread a month (still shouldn't exist) and I don't mind people discussing the graphics, but if you want it to turn into a shitslingingfest, go somewhere else. keep it OUT of the gameplay discussion. you can come in here and dog on the gameplay all you fucking want... because it's a gameplay thread!

i mean, i had no intention of spending every post in here complaining (just finished act 1 and the game is great so far) but the whole "post the way i want you to!" rubs me the wrong fucking way.
I just finished act 1.
I really have to say this game collectively shits on every other narrative, character, and cinematic endeavor brought to a video game.
In the span of 15 min I would experience excitement, feel tears welling up, and be laughing out loud. I mean its ridiculous, no game has ever had me this captivated with every single thing going on. I honestly believe in the relationships established and my god when has a intro and game over screen ever given you fricken chills before.
Another thing the character modeling, the faces and detail is just staggering and I dont think anything touches it right now not even Uncharted.
Metal Gear Solid 4 stands head and shoulders over the entire industry. It transcends the medium in damn near every way: in interactivity, in storytelling, and in cinematic and aural presentation. Kojima and Konami have raised the bar entirely and I doubt anyone else in the field will come close to it any time soon.
Having just finished it, I have never been so blown away or emotionally moved quite like this. Everything that has come before it in this generation pales in comparison.
You'd be saying the same if you were playing it, Crushed. You mgs fanboy you.

I really don't understand Liquid Snake's plan. He wants to build a island where soldiers can be soldiers or something. What's the point of this? Act 1 was pretty weak. If you enjoyed the story or whatever from the previous 3, its worth playing up to act IV before finally bailing on it. The gameplay changes quite a bit then.
It's funny but, after finishing MGS4 i'm super pumped for Star Wars force unleashed. Because that's another one that, looking at recent trailers, including the story one, it promises to be big.Yeah and I'm down with that. :-*
And for those who finished MGS4, doesn't it feel to you that they are positioning him, lover boy as the successor to Solid Snake? I swear, i had this feeling from the start that he would carry on the series.
Yeah, who doesn't want to play Metal Gear Shits. Maybe his codename can be Brown Snake.

I've been playing this for a bit and I've got to ask: this is really worthy of perfect scores?
This generation sucks for any kind of objective reviews.

So because it has a vocal fanbase, it deserves perfect/high scores? Good production values don't make a game. This getting such high scores from the press is just as infuriating as Grand Theft Auto IV, to me personally. Like, it's not as bad as GTAIV is, but still.
Finished. All and all its a A-. I'm satisfied on the whole with it and but it's not favorite in the series. Why is 3 your least favorite MGS game?
1>2>4>3
I would have preferred even more MGS2 wackiness, going even further "out there", than this attempt to stitch everything together and throw in every last character in there, whether they need to be or not (like honestly, why even bring Rose, Mei Ling, Eva, etc. into this?).

So curiosity got the better of me and I'm playing MGS4 for some unknown reason and I'm getting just as pissed off with this game as I had with the previous ones. Dumb story, wonky controls, boring gameplay....ugh. God damnit, I must be fucking distinguished mentally-challenged - I knew I hated MGS yet here I am playing this bullshit.
If I hear another character spout off about "the military economy" one more time Wayne Brady is gonna have to choke a bitch.

I don' think it's deserving of a perfect score, but the fanbase is very vocal and the game has tons of fanservice. Production values are also beyond anything I've seen.
wonky controls, boring gameplay....ugh.
how is it not? I've only played the MGO beta and the controls were a pain in the ass. I've found previous MGS games to be on the fiddly side too.
So, I haven't seen a ton of Japanese movies (other than the odd animated feature), so this is purely based on my experience with game cinematics, but do the Japanese simply have a vastly different ideals regarding proper emphasis and good pacing is? From playing the previous Metal Gear games with their drawn out cut-scenes filled with excruciating technical talk to the recent Twilight Princess with its horrible pacing and odd emphasis, I'm starting to wonder if it's really just a cultural barrier here. DCharlie?
So far ACT2 feels like Rambo4: The Game. I'm finding m60 and other huge weapons and i'm showering ennemies with bullets. I used "stealth" maybe once to take down those snipers on a hill, then used mortars on the base. Act1 was all about stealth, act2 is all action, except for the beginning of the act with the camps and the prisoners.
It's getting a bit lame; also what the fuck, I wanted to show a previous save to a friend who was here this morning, and the fuckign thing wanted to re-install act1. This is really lame.
I'll be honest, I have NO idea why they went the install road and couldnt have some sort of dynamic seamless loading here; because frankly.. the graphics are great, but having this awkward 3 minutes install between acts makes me wonder what the hell they are installing, and is bluray really that slow.

Good lord though, I find myself saying this after each MGS game gets released: best character models/animation EVAR.
It's not wonky at all, and anyone who says that is full of shit basically. Say what you want about the game, the controls are good, really good.
Why Kojima continuously builds upon this broken control scheme is beyond me. Just throw it away and take a lesson from other games like Thief or Splinter CellUh, I think that's what MGS4 is doing.

Quote from: Kranz FafkaIt's not wonky at all, and anyone who says that is full of shit basically. Say what you want about the game, the controls are good, really good.
They're better than the previous MGS games but only marginally so. It's still needlessly complicated with button presses along with pushing the stick in a certain direction to perform the most mundane tasks. And if your cover is ever blown and you need to fight, the game doesn't make feel like you're some super badass actually capable of taking care of business, it's more like an ice skating distinguished mentally-challenged fellow that's crawling backwards looking for a dumpster to hide in. Why Kojima continuously builds upon this broken control scheme is beyond me. Just throw it away and take a lesson from other games like Thief or Splinter Cell hell and why not Uncharted why you're at it. I can't begin to tell you how much more enjoyable this series would be for me and many others if they just fixed the fucking controls.
Controls are clunky. Only MGSfags disagree.I suppose even gods like Draft must be wrong at times. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v233/MastahCrushed/Emote/worshipoot.gif)
Controls are clunky. Only MGSfags disagree.
It's still got the same issue the series has had since 2 with the whole crouching/laying down/rolling/standing up mechanic all being tied to the same button. You can't roll into a crouch, you can't stand up while crouch running without doing a roll, you get knocked over by a bomb and you hammer on buttons to get up and then you DO get up and immediately lay down again. For a game that makes you crouch and lay down as often as MGS does, it would be nice if the inputs were more intuitive.
Wow, you managed to find some of those really hilariously little flaws hun? You can't stand up while crouch running, omfg....and you get laid down again, huh why exactly? Never happened to me. And you can shoot from the ground, so next time instead of wanting to get up like nothing's happening, maybe pull out your gun and shoot the motherfucker? For someone that manages to fight his way through NG 2 problems, i would've expected a bit more from you.
I'm also really confused by the wall hug mechanic, especially against low cover. Sometimes he wall hugs a waist high rock but DOESN'T crouch? So in essence I just stand there getting shot until I hit X.
Oh man, that just breaks the game. Never happened to me either.
The real, pervasive issue with MGS controls is that there's so much stuff to do that eventually you're working with input mechanics that are like, "OK, click L3, then swivel it once in a circle. No, counterclockwise. OK now hold R1, press R2 gently, and click L3 again." I put up with it because eventually you do run out of buttons and I can appreciate a man who's ambitious enough to not cut out gameplay mechanics for the sake of people who are missing fingers.
Really? When do those things happen? I fail to remember having to do all those button combos to do these "tasks". Get new material, or specify.
MGS4's controls are more intuitive than previous entries but still have some faults.
As for my funny example, I always go back to The Boss fight in MGS3. There are moments, sneaking through the flowers, popping your head up, readying a weapon, firing that weapon, where you are pressing no less than 5 buttons simultaneously, and that doesn't include using the analog sticks to aim or move.
Yes, it clearly is making you pissed.
Aside from the aiming, I don't see what's so different from MGS3.
Another thing that I'm starting to struggle with- can't sidle basically anything? Seems like a cliff or wall has to be about knee height for Snake to be able to vault it. Am I just hitting the wrong buttons? Or is it because he's old?
Slitting throats is so satisfying.
Prole, what was the last MGS game you played?
Okay this game was good.
How good?
So good I'm willing to overlook the ending to fucking MGS2.
That good!

wow, you guys weren't kidding about hayter's voiceThe entire intro with campbell sounds horrible. Its a little better later on.
what happened to him :-\
i always imagined the colonel as a black man, seeing him all old and white with the same voice is umm...not good lol.Guh? He's been clearly an old white man in Metal Gear 2, MGS1, Ghost Babel, MGS2, Twin Snakes, and Portable Ops (okay, he's a young white dude in that one).
act 1 is done.
some negative xfaggy impressions:
what's up with the loading between zones? isn't 8min of installing and 3 minute between each act enough? This is one of the biggest problems with the game, the loading between areas allows for cheap evades.
and the weak textures really hurt the nice looking cutscenes, and about the gameplay, tbh at the end i just rushed through to see more of the story, not good at stealth and i really wanna see more lol. Weak textures? I think that MGS4 in gameplay doesn't have exactly godly graphics, and isn't showing us anything we haven't seen before, but during cut scenes i think the graphics are amazing, i don't notice the weak textures at all.
btw, the palm trees near the end were pretty impressive.
edit: is this the first game with realtime cutscenes to gameplay transition? i am impressed, more impressive than the fmv to gameplay in lost odyssey due to no loading. I don't think so, i believe it has been done before, i just can't pinpoint the game. Assassins Creed did it i believe?
I'm still very much enjoying the game, but I agree that he just went a bit too far with Act 3. Act 1 and 2 were filled with excellent gameplay sequences (especially Act 2). Those areas truly offered some of the best stealth action gameplay I've ever experienced. While still very different, I was reminded of Deus Ex or Thief in that the levels were still linear, but open ended enough that it actually feels as if you can do things very differently each time (I know it's quite possible after watching a friend tackle those same segments).
Act 3 wasn't necessarily bad at all, but the cutscene to gameplay ratio just went out the window. If they want to throw around such lengthy scenes, it should be reserved for the ending segments of the game. The scenes were fun to watch, but they really needed some trimming. I hate to say this, but one missed opportunity for gameplay occured near the end of Act 3 following a boss fight. You enter a place in a cutscene with the intention of making your way to another point and they simply filled that in with a cinematic when they should have allowed you to move through the area yourself.
In a way, it reminds me of what happened with Crysis once you reached the alien structure. The focus of the game completely shifted at that point and everything you did during the first half of the game is basically dropped in favor of a more cinematic experience.
Thank God someone agrees about the Act 3 opening. In fact, I got there Friday night and I picked it up Saturday morning after thinking "Goddamn, Act 2 was so fucking awesome" and following that resistance asshole was so fucking boring that I didn't even work to get past it all weekend. I failed a few times because he's a fucking pansy that gets scared when I help him and runs away and I end up losing him and I hate looking for him. I'll push through tonight, but fuck, that's a terrible sequence. My first "are you fucking kidding me?" of the game. And I was looking at fucking footstep shapes in Act 2 for fucks sake!
Laughing Octopus is fucking hot.Give her a haircut and she'd be the spitting image of her in-game character.
picked this up. tvc's graphics talk in im got me all hyped. as i told him, i play a bazillion jappy rpgs with distinguished mentally-challenged stories for the graphics and the mechanics; playing one more game with a distinguished mentally-challenged story ain't gonna hurt me.
Yeah, I wasn't too fond of the gameplay at the start of Act 3 either. I think the last portion was probably the best as it actually had some challenge. The whole idea needed work. I aprpeciated the atmosphere, but it just went on too long.I'm still very much enjoying the game, but I agree that he just went a bit too far with Act 3. I had a bigger issue with the actual "gameplay" in Act 3 than I did with the ammount and length of the cutscenes. The first section in the streets following the resistance member was freakin' awful. I wouldn't have minded a little of that but it went entirely too long. Way too boring and completely out of place. But I agree with you about the end of the Act. As awesome as that bike scene was, it doesn't exactly make up for the fact that you're just mearly a spectator to a 30+ minute cinema on the river. They should've handed off control at some point and let us play some of that....any of it. Hell, I would've given Meryl CPR just to be able to do something.

I think its the best looking game this gen so far.
During cut scenes yes. During gameplay, it's not impressive at all.
Yeah, it still is.
I'd say that this is the best looking game of the generation so far. Sure it just looks alright during actual gameplay but holy mother of god does it look insane during the cutscenes and some of the major set piece action sequences. Unbelievably impressive stuff to the point where I'm not really sure if the 360 could ever match it. It's the first PS3 game where I can actually see this supposed extra horsepower we've been reading about for the past several years.
I know I was bitching about how ugly MGS4 was before it came out but I gotta admit I was wrong. In my defense though, those screenshots they released weren't all that hot. :p
I beat the game yesterday. The ending felt WAY too long but it was sweet nonetheless. Also, omfg at some of the weapons you get near endgame. You gun nuts will be swooning.
I'm playing through it again. Trying to do super low alert run for some secret stuff.
This game was very enjoyable to play, its too bad about the later acts kind of being more about running and gunning instead of stealth.

I also love how he justspoiler (click to show/hide)Totally cast aside the famous mindfuck final lines of MGS2, where it's revealed that the 12 Patriots died over a hundred years ago.
Then in MGS4, Snake just says to Campbell, "WELP ALL THAT WAS BOGUS INFO FROM ARSENAL'S AI"
And then the number gets cut in half for no reason, despite the fact that even the President said there were twelve head members, not just the AI.
What about The Philosophers? We KNOW that they were around for decades before even World War 2, that they were all dead, and their American branch eventually (sorta) became The Patriots. Why not just state that it was twelve of those guys, and now the Patriots are just the AIs or something? Why use a bunch of characters that have no reason to form a conspiracy like that?
-Zero? Since when the fuck did he have a "lust for power"!?
-SIGINT and the DARPA Chief? "Ror, can't havu TWO burakku chalacters in za same univelse, ZEY MUSTU BE ZA SAME PALSON"
-Para-Medic as Dr. Clark? Ignoring that Dr. Clark was supposed to have been a MAN until this game, why would a nice (yet talkative and nerdy weeaboo) turn into an insane mad scientist who did insanely unethical cloning and genetic experiments? You know why Gray Fox killed her, right? BECAUSE SHE EXPERIMENTED ON HIM LIKE AN ANIMAL, KEEPING HIM IN CONSTANT PAIN AND INSANITY. There's absolutely no foreshadowing in any of the games that would suggest that she would have such a dark side, except for mayyyyyybe a convo in Snake Eater in which she mentions that cloning could be amazing. But even then, she says, "I can't condone it on moral grounds."[close]
I mean, I don't mind crazy out-there stories in my MGS. But for God's sake, even a crazy out-there story can have some kind of coherency.
Wow. I don't know how many times you'd have had to play the previous games to remember all the points you guys are picking apart above. I watched all the gametrailer retrospectives before starting MGS4, and I didn't notice any of that stuff.

A lot of them were explicitly mentioned during key moments in the story, so not really. And GT retrospectives usually fuck up a lot of stuff and are pretty basic.
spoiler (click to show/hide)Crushed. The MGS3 people were the founding members of the Patriots. Kenneth Baker was also a member. I guess the other five really don't matter because the dueling factions within the patriots--zero, singit, para-medic versus big boos, eva, ocelot--were the most critical to the story[close]
Ok Crushed, you have crushed the illusion.Yes, my purpose is to destroy all of the fun in life.
Now i can't forget it, because now i remember everything. All i'm thinking now is how many plot holes there are in MGS4.
Happy now?! >:(

PS: I'm just doing this because of all the people ranting about how "WOW NOW EVERYTHING MAKES SENSE KOJIMA MUST HAVE AN ELEPHANT'S MEMORY TO REMEMBER ALL THESE DETAILS" yet when you bring up something semi-major that MGS4 contradicts it turns into, "GOD WHO NEEDS TO REMEMBER STUPID DETAILS LIKE THAT"
And why the hell didn't Meryl at least once called Snake by his name? David???? Will somebody teach the scriptwriter how to write some decent shit?! Such a simple thing, but that to me would've made a world of difference.

"I don't get off my motorcycle unless I fall in love......or die."
"Oh, Big Mamma!"
"Call me Eva!"
That there is quality writting.
To be fair to Kojima, I don't have any clue as to whether he can write good dialogue or not. Maybe Patel can speak to that.
Just went through the huge final set piece cut scene in act 3. It's amazing. But is it real time? I can't zoom in, i just found that out.

There are 2-3 in the game you can't manipulate. As I understand it, those were ones with a shit-ton of stuff going on, so the engine probably ran at a nice 10fps or so. For these scenes, they recorded the scene and then sped it up later or something.
I suck at sneaking around. Imma going to get the LE guide tomorrow...Non lethal weapons are your friend.
Good lord, the GAF MGS4 thread is getting to the point where you're knee deep in semen; its the equivalent of the Batman Begins love on the OT side.

Yeah, I know. The coronation of a new sacred cow. I think my assessment (and the one shared by at least a few others) is the level-headed one: Best gameplay, worst story.
I'm not sure I can recommend this game to anyone outside of Metal Gear fans. It's a solid game, but not worth the hyperbole being tossed around.
I'm still not sure how anyone can determine which MGS game has the least reprehensible story, though I suppose the first one was decent enough until Liquid shows up and starts ranting on about genetics. 2,3, and 4 though.....oh brother. I just gotta shake my head in disbelief at the people that honestly and truly enjoy this. It's one big pile of steaming nonsense wrapped up in a very pretty package....like Mormonism. MGS is the Joseph Smith of videogames.

The transgressions in 2 really don't bug me that much. The whole ordeal strikes a delicate balance between ridiculous and awesome. Some of the Rose stuff was a bit too much, but Otacon fucking his mom--pure awesome. And the late game narrative shift into wacky AI mind fuckery probably makes me forget a lot of sins.
You see, I'd say 2 is my favorite because of how memorable it was when playing it the first time. The virginal playthrough counts a lot for me. MGS3 is more replayable, but it never had the impact that the first playthrough of MGS2 had for me. MGS2 was like, "woah, videogames can have stories that do interesting things," and while MGS3 was good all around, it didn't stick the shocker in my ass.
What did you guys think of thespoiler (click to show/hide)Final fight against Liquid Ocelot? I freakin loved it. I would almost say that its the best part of the whole game but I think I'm leaving that for piloting Rex against Ray :D[close]

Don't confuse the people that enjoy it with those that live and breathe it. Its just distinguished mentally-challenged conspiracy theory fun for a lot of us. Others, like Safe Bet on GAF, rely on them as lifechanging events though.
It's a story that took 2 decades to complete. You can't please everyone. There are going to be opinions on both sides. Can we at least be happy that it wasn't done in 480P with waggle controls? Only God knows what Kojima would have done with that.

And yes, he would make it so it could tell that it was your mouth.
And yes, it would actually shoot a bullet into your brain.
BTW: MGS4 already has waggle controls.
It's just like with every game. There's people that get it and there's people that don't.Gameplay wise? Sure.
I'm glad I get this one, cause it just happens to be a masterpiece.
fucking sex
ok, finally got past the stupid mission about following the resistance douche and omfg, the chase sequence was fucking sex. it is seriously the most impressive thing i've seen on a console. holy fuck. so much fun too.

NANOMACHINES
first of all, the beauty and the beast, unlike the past games the bosses here are like...fillers, they serve no purpose whatsoever.Honestly, they are hardly different from The Cobra unit of MGS3 in that regard. The first couple Cobra fights were crap and the characters served no purpose while even the great Cobra fights were still characters that basically were disconnected from the plot (excluding The Sorrow, of course, though that was hardly a boss "fight").
i dunno dark, i am not a big fan f the 3rd game but at least they felt "alive" to me.Well, yeah, they were basically designed to be mindless war machines. That was the point. Whether or not it worked is a different matter.
here, they are just zombies, i am not feeling them at all.

and btw, act 5 graphics is ace.

I rank 1 the worst because the whole I Killed A Boss, Now I Get To Hear His Life Story thing is terrible.
he's just trying to please fans to try and make it very final, so he just stitched everything in the series together. Besides, he's a programmer, he doesn't have a background in writing.
spoilazspoiler (click to show/hide)yeah the whole love story between Naomi and Hal was silly. Kojima doesn't have a programming background at all. He majored in economics, and was hired by Konami as a planner (game designer).

overall, i think the "game" ended at act 2.
the rest? an interactive movie full of fanservice.spoiler (click to show/hide)act 3 --> stalk some cigarillo with obligatory boss/on rail stuff.
act 4 --> empty remodeled place full of fanservice with obligatory boss/on rail stuff.
act 5 --> weakest one, there is like two gameplay rooms in here, a broken, frustrating room and the obligatory boss fight.[close]
instead of mission briefing they could have expanded the gameplay more but alas they chose not to.
The year has another 6 months to go.
Anyways, its the best thing so far this year, but at the same time, 3 of the 5 acts are "meh". So while another game this year may not hit the heights of MGS4 at its best, I find it hard to believe that something more consistently great won't come along before the end. Through Act 1 and 2, MGS4 is worthy of all the hype, but Act 3 thru 5 really are inferior.
Meh, it was to be expected. Some people cant take any criticism whatsoever of their precious game. More than anything, I laugh at the predictably prompt arrival of the MGS defense crew.
Gameplay wise, this is not the best game of the year at all. Grand Theft Auto 4 has more gameplay in a third of it than the whole of MGS4, that's why it pisses me off when i read that official thread.GTA continues to suffer from the same problems, however. It has always offered MORE content than most games on the market, yet the core gameplay remains unrefined. Many of the missions in GTAIV were pretty worthless as well.
The game will win GAF goty anyway.
All MGSs do, every sony fanboy will vote for it. Then they cry for the rest of the next year about how MGS didn't won awards in the media.
The dream sequence is the best fanservice ever in a game.

I think Fallout 3 and LittleBigPlanet will really mix things up. Don't forget that 2 years ago, Oblivion was GOTY from almost everywhere and Fallout 3 is following in its footsteps. Other than those two, I don't think anything else coming out this year will top MGS4. The only thing that could really cause a real change would be if RE5 came out this year, but it won't and 2009 will be RE5 awards everywhere.
I do expect GTA4 to get (undeserved) awards from various websites this year, but oh well.
I was talking about GAF. And no, LBP is just a fad right now, Fallout 3 will get love from 360 and Pc owners i suppose, but 360 and PC and Wii fans will divide votes a lot.
Ps3 fanboys will have one target, MGS4.
As far as real awards, the ones devs give to each other etc, you know, the awards that count, because you really don't need to get an award by the fans, the award fans give to devs is $, so the game that sells the most is the big award winner, anyway, as far as real awards i can see it going between Fallout 3/LBP/GTAIV/Gears of War 2. That's my prediction right now.
I don't see MGS4 winning anything other than technical awards. Which makes sense.
It made me rip MGS1 so I could play it on my PSP.
Fallout 3 is coming out for PS3 also, so it can be huge on all fronts. And I just realized that we are both wrong when it comes to 'real awards because Spore is coming out this year. Spore is gonna take everything
QuoteIt is a shame Sony didn't bother putting it on PSN.
lol - whut?
they made sure it was up on the JPN PSN but didn't bother uploading the US version? Smh.
Yeah, I said "WTF" @ that too :lol
If theres one thing MGS4 most certainly isnt, its ambiguous. Its like HK went out of his way to take any mystery out of the series by answering every last question he possibly could. More often than not, these explanations were really shitty.

Act 5 is a joke. The game is basically over when you complete Act 4. Hell, you could almost say the game is over when you finish Act 2.
you can avoid them in that area? all i hear is otacon saying "that's a gekko snake! be careful!" and then the gekko gets up and attacks me.

Act 3 was cool. Screaming Mantis was fun, as was the motorcycle run.
I'll be playing through Act 5 tonight after work. I'm not looking forward to a 90 minute movie. If anyone can sum it up for me in spoilers, that would be cool. Unless, for some reason, it totally stands out as an awesome cut scene.

Didn't love some of the old archaic gameplay elements like "press triangle to press up against this wall". Why can't I just press up against the effing wall like in every other modern game like this? That's not actually "archaic" for this series, however. This is the first time a Metal Gear game required you to press a button in order to lean against a wall. A previous MGS games required you to press yourself against it manually, but it became difficult to use when you started to perform other actions on top of leaning. Furthermore, pressing a button isn't exactly uncommon. Gears of War, R6Vegas and Uncharted (just to name three) all require a button press if you wish to lean up against a wall.
ok, so how do i beat crying wolf in shadow moses? i can never even find that cunt
why the fuck does vamp keep regenerating?? how do i kill him?? i tried putting the fucker to sleep. no go. i tried the rail gun. no go. blew him all to fuck with the grenade launcher. no go.

I will beat this today and then I will read your spoiler Fafka and we can play through it again together

wtf junpei? the beginning of act 3 is the worst part of the game!
was not amazing. :-\
The controls and mechanics of the Metal Gear fight aren't amazing. They're barely even fun. You have a chunky ass dodge that you use to avoid Liquid's chunky ass charge, then you do an R1 R1 R1 combo on his robot, then you QTE him. Then you shoot him with your machine gun. And you do that like 6 times. So it's dial-a-combo action.

Finally beat it yesterday, some of the final parts were kinda frustrating - how the hell were you supposed to figure out how to kill Vamp w/o consulting a FAQ... also, the Haven room with all the gekkos and frogs all over the place, and the fight with Psycho Mantis.

I didn't do so hot in the game, got the rank of "Eagle"... But oh well, it was really cool seeing the story even if it did overstay its welcome.

i think otacon told me how to kill vamp.
Well, if you never even really tried MGS3, then that doesn't say a whole lot about anything. Hell, even an admitted MGS hater such as myself gave MGS3 a shot (and, to be fair, enjoyed it a good deal more than the previous games), so I don't get why you didn't at least try it out.
So many douchebags posting spoiler filled shit over and over again. Pathetic.
I'll just say this. I bought MGS on the PSOne long ago. Got 80% through it, and never finished it. Bought MGS2 on my PS2, played 4 hours in, and never finished it. Bought MGS3 and never even started it.
Bought MGS4, and beat the game 6 days later.
I think that says all that needs to be said about MGS4 for me. The fact that I wanted to finish it, and finish it in a timely manner, says something about how great the game is for me.

You were able to finish it "in a timely manner" because there's hardly any actual "game" in MGS4. I don't know how that constitutes it being great.

I'm not trolling you fucking twat. I'm giving my opinion. Put me on ignore if you don't like it.
I don't think anyone would accuse you of being an MGS fanboy. You're an obvious Playstation 3 fantard, which in this case happens to dovetail with the MGS fancrew.
So many douchebags posting spoiler filled shit over and over again. Pathetic.
The earlier MGS games also had a ton of cut scenes, but as I pointed out, I didn't finish them. Get the point? MGS4 was different, and it had no more cut scenes/codecs than the earlier games.

Well, EB is a small board and most people who wanted to play the game seem to have finished it by now. no way. There's like 50% more cut scene in 4. Many of which would make great game play segments. I would've loved to play the Johnny/Meryl scene with the important parts taking place in QTE. or the Raiden/Vamp fight while Snake took care of Gekkos in a cut scene.
Regardless of how much gameplay is in the game
goddamn it otacon, you said pretty much the same thing in mgs1 and mgs2, and you're gonna cry again before mgs4 is over, just accept the fact that you're a big ol' crybaby

Ah, this is a fun game. First, the "I've got a black friend so I can't be racist" defence, followed by the accusation that I, in fact, must be the one who is insane. So which side am I? Please, enlighten me. Everyone is always telling me different answers.
Since you've started posting here again recently, I've seen you make multiple statements contrary to generally-held beliefs. I'm sure it's pure coincidence that all of these statements are in favour of the PS3.

Yeah, maybe at least for a couple weeks would be nice. Is that really hard to understand? Some people may just wander into this thread not knowing what to expect.

Yeah, there may be more cut scenes, but there are a hell of a lot less code conversations, which the previous games drowned you in. But now you're just going off into fantasy land about wanting to play as other characters and the like. That has nothing to do with how much gameplay/cutscenes there are in MGS4.
I think it's a legit question to wonder why Kojima opted for cut scenes in places where game play would've been a perfect fit. After all, it's a video game. Besides, you said there was no more cut scene in MGS4 than previous games--outright fabrication there buddy, and that was the issue. My extra comment was about the nature of the cut scenes.
:rofl I love this thread

Actuallly, you need to go re-read what I said. The exact quote was "cutscenes/codecs".

I was just thinking it might be nice if Kojima-sama would make some attempt to combine gameplay and narrative

the cemetery sequence at the end is the most boring sequence i've seen in decades, out of any medias I've seen. It reminds me of the architect scene in the Matrix.
I've been browsing forums while those tools are talking.
Henry: I'm your twin brother.
Travis: What the hell? That's the craziest shit I've ever heard. Why would you bring up something like that at the very last minute of the game?

$500+ for a sub-20 hour game, amazing
Heavenly Sword is a movie. MGS4 is a game with long cut scenes.
- I really hated how Mei Lei (or whatever) was shown to be completely incompetent at her job. What was up with that? Women in MG's world are either femme fatales stereotypes or typical animu trash '8yo stuck in a 24yo's old body' syndrome.Which is bizarre, since in MGS1 (and during her cameo in MGS2), she was shown to be extremely mature and competent. Why the hell is she even commanding a boat, anyway? She's an analyst. WTF.
something about liking old men...WHY WOULD SHE WANT TO COMMAND A BOAT.
but they turned her into a masculine bodybuilding semi-butch...I don't think you remember MGS1 too well. She WAS a masculine bodybuilding semi-butch.

They stuck her with the job after Shadow Moses. I think her character was actually good in MGS4. She was pretty confident for someone who never really saw real battle before and was there to train soldiers using VR.SPOILERS IN MY REPLY.
edit: also, How was Johnny not on the nanomachines too, especially since he was the soldier that ends up naked in the first game. All the solders of Shadow Moses were all on the nanomachines.
Also what was up with only having two codec channels? Rose's codec was uselesssnake, your psyche's high! keep it up!
edit: also, Why was Meryl so fucking hostile to Snake the entire game? She kept referring to how old he was, how out of touch, and so on. She's nice to him during the segment when they meet up and escape, but after that, she turns into a bitch. She was not like that in the first game.

snake originally had older nanomachines that didn't work like the ones the PMC's had. i assume johnny had the same type, since they got them at the same time

Wasn't it something along the lines of that he had to take a shit and never got the mandatory shots? Seriously, I think that's what he said when he was feeding ammo to Meryl.

In the final act when she describes the mission, she keeps fucking up and forgetting what she was about to say, until some other character (Johnny?) steps up to complete her words and so on, as if she didnt know wtf she was talking about. It happens several time, and then there's that embarrassing point where she drops her pointer and bends over to pick it up. Kojima made her to be this total j-idol type bimbo, and I thought it was pretty lame.
And then at the end, with the scene with Meryl when shes getting of budget, either they ran out of budget for that voice actress, but all she does is groan and react like Pikachu with 'oooh','aahh' and 'mmmmm', making her look even more distinguished mentally-challenged.
Also what was up with only having two codec channels? Rose's codec was useless

Meryl looks toned in MGS1 and she has a tough girl attitude.

that's exactly what he said. smh
Oh boy, now it's time to explain the MGS4 plot holes.I thought that was answered by Snake and the chick from MG1, the other chick from MG2, Snake and Meryl in MGS1, and Big Boss and Eva in MGS3.

same difference! still as pathetic. but kinda funny in contrast with how serious the SOP system is...this one dork managed to "duck out" :lol

I "loved" (ahem) that Sasaki claims to have loved Meryl from the beginning... which if I remember right, was when she beat him unconscious and then stripped him naked. He and Otacon could get together over banana daiquiris and have a long talk about loving women who are awful to them.
"Boy oh boy, that woman is built all right!"
"That bitch! She took my clothes!"
Wow Johnny, you sure did love her all right.

eh. not really.no it doesn't kill it. it's a great game, give it a shot.
It's difficult though right?
Why did Psycho Mantis appear and then not do anythingI think his persona ((http://i29.tinypic.com/2lc6ukm.gif)) was implanted in Screaming Mantis, and then it showed up again as a ghost who tried to move your controller and read your memory card.
So basically all the bad guys in MGS history were good guys that were fighting the oppressive system?
Does that make Snake the true bad guy since he slaughtered most of them?
I blocked out the whole cemetary partBut you missed the Big Boss ex machina!

Seriously, it was very unnecessary, but then again, the whole wedding scene was, and really, the whole idea of Meryl marrying the joke-character-of-the-series-who-turned-semi-serious-at-the-end is kinda distinguished mentally-challenged.
I don't think I would ever play this game with other people watching

Assuming you don’t skip the frequent and lengthy cutscenes, you do indeed spend more time watching MGS4 than playing it. Long cutscenes and extensive dialogue have always been the series’ trademark, but MGS4 takes it to an unprecedented level, regularly subjecting the “player” to scenes that run as long as a television show, some even as long as an actual movie – complete with intermissions that give you a chance to save your, ahem, game.
For devoted fans of the MGS saga’s story, this might be thrilling; for purists interested in gameplay, it’s a appalling: a shameless, self-indulgent exercise in artistic excess that comes at the expense of a legitimate interactive experience. The nagging absurdity in the frequent watching is that many of the game’s cinematic sequences easily could’ve been – indeed, should’ve been – gameplay.
The clearest example: As is the series’ tradition, the game ends with a fistfight. But MGS4's innovation is to make the fisticuffs totally non-interactive at first, the player simply watching a virtual brawl for five uninterrupted minutes before abruptly handed the controls, as if the game snapped itself out of a masturbatory stupor and realized “Oh, I guess we can let you do this part.”
Some questions about MGS4:
1) Why would other countries trust PMCS when the soldiers were all under the control of Armstech? Even if they didn't know about the Patriots, it still makes no sense to put so much trust in an American corporation.
2) Why didn't the Patriots just shut down Liquid's soldiers if he were such a huge threat?
2) I don't think they could after GW infiltrated the system.
2) I don't think they could after GW infiltrated the system.
Meryl said they still could when Snake first met up with her. Why didn't they just do it then? By that time, his army was already bigger than the US army.
sorry, haven't read the whole thing, but from that snippet, you're engaging in the kind of prescriptive criticism that game reviewers absolutely have not got the chops or authority to engage in. evaluate the success of mgs4's lengthy cutscenes, but don't assume that lengthy cutscenes violate a principleThey violate the principal of letting a man play his Goddamn game.
i think your itagaki avatar is leakingYeah well I think your avatar is gay.
smooth:
re: question 2 -- the patriots' main concern was keeping the war economy going, and it's suggested as far back as mgs2 that their 'minds' are in a way very simple. as long as liquid's pmcs were contributing to the economy, and didn't seem to pose any imminent threat, the patriots would presumably be content to let them operate. by the time liquid became an obvious threat, he had started hacking sop as narag explained

it's my (possibly wacky) opinion that mgs is eminently a videogame even when it's totally noninteractive.
the fact of its realtime computer graphics, the persistent (unsuccessful) attempts to compare soldiers or spies to videogamers, the porous fourth wall, the psyche gauge that pops up when old snake feels bad. etcetera. the prescriptive statement that videogames ought ideally to be interactive all the time -- that any sort of cutscene is a furtive indulgence -- just tries to cut off some of the rich possibilities that mgs explots. and game reviewers haven't done enough groundwork to make statements of that kind

Let's be honest; people would not be complaining about the cut scenes if they were really interesting. At least one third of the cutscenes needed a massive re-edit; and dwelled wayy too deep into mg fandom; so deep that regular mg fans like me got bored to tears. It was simply too much.
Any SS2 vet knew that a ridiculously horribly boss fight was inevitable.
The Atlas fight was at least a little better than the Shodan fight. My God, what a way for one of gaming's defining villains to go out :lol
And as I said, it is great for a console only shooter.
So we agree. Resistance's fun for people who haven't played many shooters. Also, HL2:EP2's final fight had more action than all of Resistance.
i mean...i can easily imagine a game enthusiast who bashes mgs and is not a smug philistine, but how often do you encounter such a creature

i think i'm just irritated with the 'movie theater' line itself, which has become a thing people thoughtlessly repeat, and is thus stupider than any of its individual speakers
Just rented it and played for an hour or 2-3, still on Act 1. Really like it, gameplay and control is way better than in MGS2 (which I also played) and damn the art and graphics are so good and consistent. Clear image quality too. Really pretty.
What was that 1 million dollar intro? Was it supposed to be really short?

There are a few, you don't see all of them. I saw different ones during my replay, which was at a different difficulty - so I don't know if difficulty affects it, or number of playthroughs, or if it's just totally random.
Big Boss Hard = Serious business.
took me an hour to get through the scene right before you get the MkII and silenced tranq gun. It was so fucking fun though...except that one time where I almost had it, pressed triangle to flatten on the ground, and a collision issue with a nearby garbage can caused snake to stand up and get caught. >_<
I have a feeling the fun is over now that I have a silenced gun...maybe I should go straight to extreme.
some of those filmed shorts are kind of great, and it's a shame you can't easily watch them unless you've got the making-of bd
sorry, not to get back into the mgs4 thing, but i saw another one of those 'mgs would be laughed out of a movie theater' posts on gaf -- from somebody whose english makes me hope he's foreign. how servile that line of thought is...not 'i laugh at it,' but 'an "average" movie audience would laugh at it.' if you really want to drive a point home, invent and then join a mob. mgs bashers can't be boors alone, they have to be boors en masse -- and i bet they are the sort of people who laugh and jeer and flatulate in the direction of movies that displease them
i mean...i can easily imagine a game enthusiast who bashes mgs and is not a smug philistine, but how often do you encounter such a creature
QuoteKojima doesn't have a programming background at all. He majored in economics, and was hired by Konami as a planner (game designer).
oh well, whatever. in any case, somebody at Konami has really awkward taste.
You know, it goes both ways. I always get a chuckle at the people that defend MGS's story as somehow being above the critics' comprehension and that we somehow miss the supposedly deep undertones of the plot. I just can't even believe people would be so blind to the fact that MGS is just piss poor storytelling. All the "you're too stupid!" comments just boggles the mind. IMO most of the obscene smugness and outright elitism is coming from the people with snake avatars and codec frequency tattoos.but do you honestly not see how MGS4's story is more than just snake versus the bad guys? i think it's kinda silly when people make claims thrashing all over MGS games' story when they only seem to consider what's on the surface--they take it too literally.
And yeah, I have no doubt that unless they completely (and I mean COMPLETELY) retool the MGS storyline it'd make for an outright horrible movie. Attack of the Clones level bad.

MGS4 is more fresh on my mind so i'll stick with that without going into the other games. kojima likes metaphors though, and i don't think people are used to having strong metaphors in games yet. when you take MGS4 by face value, it's definitely ridiculous. we could list plenty of ridiculous elements to MGS4, but i want to mention one in particular. i'd listen on 1up yours as shawn would argue against the logistics and viability of a future with PMCs like in MGS4; yeah, PMCs can't really exist like that. but i don't think that's the point. i think PMC soldiers were more a metaphor.
it seemed pretty obvious to me at the time and i'm sure i could draw specific examples if i went and played through it again, but i saw a lot of metaphors to the current gaming industry/community. the PMC soldiers are a metaphor for the forum soldiers you see on any given gaming forum. PMC soldiers fight endless proxy battles for their company much like forum soldiers endlessly argue for their company. several times, i saw kojima represented in snake. snake is upset with the current war industry in the game--kojima seems upset over the games industry. snake mentions that "war has changed" and that war is no longer about ideologies, profit, ethnicity, or resources (these are what all wars typically result from). you can compare that to the game industry and how it's also changed. while you could argue it's just people being lost in nostalgia, it's not uncommon for people to think the game industry has changed--going from being about delivering deep gameplay experiences to now being more about the profits and metacritic scores. snake is old and tired. kojima seems to be tired of doing MGS games.
and some people will try to break this metaphor by bringing up examples where it doesn't necessarily work on the same level in every area--but that's not how metaphors work. metaphors don't have to obey strict rules or be 100% consistent throughout. metaphors can adapt, change, and morph. metaphors can take on multiple meanings.
i don't think MGS4 is purely a metaphor--i don't think kojima is just making a statement or whatever. he's also interested in delivering an entertaining story, and i think he succeeds there.

PMC soldiers fight endless proxy battles for their company much like forum soldiers endlessly argue for their company. several times, i saw kojima represented in snake. snake is upset with the current war industry in the game--kojima seems upset over the games industry. snake mentions that "war has changed" and that war is no longer about ideologies, profit, ethnicity, or resources (these are what all wars typically result from). you can compare that to the game industry and how it's also changed. while you could argue it's just people being lost in nostalgia, it's not uncommon for people to think the game industry has changed--going from being about delivering deep gameplay experiences to now being more about the profits and metacritic scores. snake is old and tired. kojima seems to be tired of doing MGS games.
and some people will try to break this metaphor by bringing up examples where it doesn't necessarily work on the same level in every area--but that's not how metaphors work. metaphors don't have to obey strict rules or be 100% consistent throughout. metaphors can adapt, change, and morph. metaphors can take on multiple meanings. and these aren't really high-level concepts or anything... metaphors are pretty basic in literature. i just don't think people are used to seeing them in games.
i don't think MGS4 is purely a metaphor--i don't think kojima is just making a statement or whatever. he's also interested in delivering an entertaining story, and i think he succeeds there. if it were translated into a movie, i think there'd have to be a lot of retooling, but not necessarily with the story--they'd have to retool the delivery. i don't necessarily think MGS games are "genius" but they're undoubtedly up near the top when it comes to video game stories. they're some of the only games that even make an attempt to be more than just good guy vs bad guys.
Metaphor for the console wars? Really? Console wars changed? Really? I hope you're wrong because that sounds awful or did you hear Shame Bettenhausen say this?the idea might have been brought up in the past but i dont' remember where or by whom.
I think the aging and obsolete theme/metaphor whatever in the game is far more meaningful. To the point that Dyack would probably call the game "MGS4: Too Old"i looked at that more like kojima is relating his role in the MGS series to snake. snake is dying and moving on to the after life--kojima is putting his role as lead to bed and moving on to other projects. snake is free from war. kojima is free from MGS.
while I respect your opinion JustinP, I hope you're wrong.it's a non-sensical over the top circle jerk for fans regardless
that would actually make me think less of the story. it's a non-sensical over the top circle jerk for fans, just the way I like it.
Metaphor for the console wars? Really? Console wars changed? Really? I hope you're wrong because that sounds awful or did you hear Shame Bettenhausen say this? You know, it goes both ways. I always get a chuckle at the people that defend MGS's story as somehow being above the critics' comprehension and that we somehow miss the supposedly deep undertones of the plot. I just can't even believe people would be so blind to the fact that MGS is just piss poor storytelling. All the "you're too stupid!" comments just boggles the mind. IMO most of the obscene smugness and outright elitism is coming from the people with snake avatars and codec frequency tattoos.but do you honestly not see how MGS4's story is more than just snake versus the bad guys? i think it's kinda silly when people make claims thrashing all over MGS games' story when they only seem to consider what's on the surface--they take it too literally.

i am blown away by the thought that someone could honestly believe that a person would try to write a story that could be a metaphor for fucking CONSOLE WARSi'm blown away by the thought that some people are so resistant to the thought that someone might write a story that also touches on social commentary and that the social commentary might be related to the giant industry that not only the writer is a part of, but his entire audience can take part and relate to. this is not that unusual for art, but again, this is unusual in games. this is why some people argue that MGS games are postmodern games.
Frankly, I think "postmodern" is a label more often slapped on shitty art in an attempt to justify its shittiness than art that's actually postmodern.k

Finished my no kills, no health items, and no alerts run in 4 and a half hours. Did it on the easiest difficulty but I still unlocked the stealth camouflage and bandanna.wow, hardcore.
...like most MGS games, it seems designed to be played more than once: first to find out what the hell's going on, and then at every playthrough afterwards to refine your playing technique. The first time I made an attempt to plow through it, I treated it only marginally as the stealth game it's supposed to be. I watched the cutscenes, ignored the bits with the tedious diagrams of computer cores and soldier mugshots, chortled at the monkey antics, got mad that Raiden finally turned awesome and you can't play as him this time, then plowed through a level with my array of superbad custom rifles like it's Metal Gears of War or something.
This is where you learn what the game's about, come to grips with new gameplay developments and formulate basic strategy for new scenarios and enemies, plus all that plot plot et cetera. Familiarizing yourself with a Metal Gear Solid game in this way is probably a make-or-break point for a lot of people, and if you don't give half a rat buttock about picking this game up ever again, I don't blame you. But once you get past the game the first time and beat it in reckless, get-it-over-with guns-blazing fashion, there's the likelihood you'll get this nagging feeling that you played it "wrong" -- and that if you really want to get the most out of MGS4, you've got to go through it again and make your own challenges: sneak through a level without any alerts, without any kills, without using anything but the tranquilizer gun and maybe a bit of close-quarters combat.
...you brought up something I’ve always had a pet peeve about. If you wander over to NeoGAF (I don’t recommend it, but if you do anyway), you see lots of people engaging in that sort of talk. “Play it on the hardest difficulty, go for no kills, go for no alerts, go for only CQC kills,” and so on. My question – regarding MGS4 or any other game – is: if you need to come up with what are essentially house rules to make a game more compelling, isn’t there a problem? When I was playing Street Fighter II in the arcades back in the day, I’d bet quarters I could beat people with one hand. It makes the game more interesting, but it doesn’t make it better. It’s a stunt, like the crazy Japanese gamers who go through Resident Evil with only a knife. It has nothing to do with the game, instead it's about the player.
That’s my feeling when I hear talk about how MGS4 “should” be played. I went through on the second-to-highest difficulty, stealthy when possible but shootin’ fools when necessary, and it all went fine. If the game is beatable with bland play, then it’s a bland game. I shouldn’t have to play in an unusual way to make it fun; the game should demand interesting play from me.
People are still playing this?
Well, we got that point-counterpoint on MGS4 up... but to give fair warning: it's more a discussion between someone who didn't like it and someone who kinda liked it.since when is a goal with a corresponding reward considered "house rules" for a game? (http://upload.dfyb.net/uploaded/cran.gif)
It's also very wall-o'-text. But I think there're some shiny bits in there.

the game doesn't punish you - you just get rewards if you rely on the shit weapons
This game is so horrible. I don't think I'm going to even finish it.
Ok, just beat it again (hard mode again, and i got wolf ranking - no kills, continues, rations, or alerts!), and I've got a question. I realized Big Boss did not just come back to life and go to meet Snake. He mentions talking to Naomi, who of course died before the Patriots were overthrown. Yet he also says that his body and mind were sealed by the system and he could not be released until the system was destroyed. I thought that maybe he could have meant that Solidus was the one that was sealed, but the database says that he was taken after MG2 by the Patriots and sealed. How can this make sense? How indeed? Surely there is a plausible AND satisfying explanation.
Hahaha, for real. I was like "what the fuck? why is there some dude shitting his pants in a fire fight? why is some dude taking a dump in a drum can?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comic_relief
why is there an entire scene about making eggs?"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symbolism
Game is a piece of shit
