Oh looky what I got.

I just put in a couple hours, and I am enjoying what I have played seen so far. I'll post some brief spoiler-free impressions, and I'll give you more detailed impressions before I go to bed.

+Presentation is top notch, not surprising since it is a Kojima Productions game.
+Soundtrack is superb. Same goes for sound effects. I've been playing this in 5.1, and it's been so immersive awesome so far.
+Gameplay seems to be a minor extension and refinement of MG3: Subsistence from what I've seen. Could be a con if your expecting radical changes and a change of pace. The new camouflage system has been a lot fun to fuck around with, and it makes stealth much more fun. Shooting is easy and intuitive as long as you turn auto aim off.
-Graphically, the game is a mixed bag because of the uneven and highly variable texture work. The models, however, look great and are highly detailed. The frame rate runs at a reasonable pace (30), with occasional hiccups and drops (~15-20). This might be because I am playing it on 1080p. I'll try 720p and see if it makes it run smoother.
-The controls still feel a bit clunky and clumsy, but you get used to it and it's not game-breaking.
-The cut scenes are rather long. I've already run into two that were about 10 minutes long. Fortunately, you can skip them if you don't care for the story (although I never met a Metal Gear fan that plays the games for the gameplay).
-The story starts out very slow, with some MGS2-level wackiness and bullshit for the first 5 minutes. So far, it hasn't grabbed me yet like MGS1 and MGS3 did. I hope Kojima didn't aim to make every even numbered MGS game have an incoherent, convoluted storyline.

The game has four difficulty levels:

Liquid Easy
Naked Normal
Solid Normal (US and Euro normal)
Big Boss Hard

If you got any questions, feel free to ask. I haven't played MGO yet so I can't really say anything about it.

Renamed the thread for Mups. :P

Aside from that (it is Metal Gear after all), thanks for the impressions.  I look forward to reading more, though I can't think of any questions myself.

Dark1X's gonna play MGS4 in 480I to keep the framerate at a "solid" 30fps.  :rofl

Sorry for not updating the thread, I had to spend the night with my dad at a hospital.

Man, this game is starting to pick up and become fuck awesome. I can't describe the effect the change of setting has on the gameplay. Putting you right in the battlefield between two warring factions is really exciting. It feels a LOT like Call of Duty 4.

The environments are so well-designed you can't help but forgive the frame rate issues. The scope is incredible, and getting on top of a building and viewing the landscape is breathtaking (you can see forever). A lot of work has been put into the architecture, and never in a MGS game have I felt the urge to explore.

Graphically, the game does run smoother at 720p (I am not sure why it had problems with 1080p upscaled). It reminds me a lot of PC games, because the frame rate is not really locked you see. The frame rate jumps to 60+ fps in indoor environments. lol

Brb I am going to play the game some more. :D

Btw, I never knew Kojima was such an Apple shill. Snake has an iPod (for playing music from your PS3's HDD) and Meryl was using a MacBook Pro the first time I met her. :lol

You're fully of shit, Borys.  You know damn well that I was extremely hard on the PS3 version of CoD4 for its framerate skips.  I had a hard time dealing with the performance of GTAIV, couldn't stand Heavenly Sword due to its nearly unplayable framerate and was even annoyed by the drops in stuff like Uncharted (which are extremely minor in comparison).  Why would you think I'd simply excuse something due to the fact that it is a PS3 game?

The reason I tend to be pickier on the PC is simply because you can modify settings.  I end up with an almost OCD-like situation of constantly fiddling with settings until I find something that delivers great visuals at a perfect framerate.  It becomes frustrating and it's my own fault.

I become annoyed with performance issues on consoles as well, but it bothers me somewhat less simply because I realize that I can do nothing to solve the issue.  This changes a bit in cases where lowering the resolution improves performance.  Tomb Raider Legend on 360, for instance, ran like shit at 720p but was much smoother at 480p.  I ended up constantly switching between the two resolutions and becoming frustrated as a result.

I both love and hate options.

It doesn't really make a difference.  There's always going to be a game that requires fiddling.  I can pretty much run everything on my PC at 60 fps at the moment except Crysis.

Wow, you're being arrogant, now. It does make a difference. Hopping into the video and system settings for two seconds to max everything out isn't what I'd call fiddling. And your computer isn't that good if all you can churn out is 60fps. I get around 80-95FPS on TF2.

Is the story at all serious, or is it just a bunch of wackiness in a pretentious package? After seeing Haze and Army of Two piss all over the potential of telling a good story with PMCs placed front and center, this is practically my last hope for a game that does the material justice. Will I be somewhat happy, or will I make a long and venomous rant thread on Evilbore about how fucked up it is?

And assuming the story is complete shit, can I skip the cut-scenes and still feel motivated to play through the missions? Or will I miss out on crucial mission information?

hold on, i thought you said you ran all your PC games at 720p?
--why-- aren't you hitting 60fps for crysis?
...because I use Very High settings.  At 1360x768 or 1280x720 (depending on the display I'm using), Crysis runs very well at extremely high settings.  If I use just "High" it does run much faster, but it also looks much worse.  There isn't a PC on the market that can run Crysis at the highest levels of detail while maintaining a solid 60 fps.  Virtually every other game (the ones that aren't poorly coded) runs perfectly.

Quote

I know it makes a difference.  My point was that I'm not currently bothered by the performance of my current PC but I have complained in the past.  The reason I state 60 fps is because I LOCK the framerate at 60 fps.  I don't allow it to go higher.  60 Hz + v-sync on a CRT is the smoothest you'll get.  The motion handling is fantastic.  If I disable v-sync I can get framerates much higher than 80-95 fps in TF2, but it looks much worse than a solid v-sync'd 60 fps.  Again, I'm VERY happy with my current PC performance and really have no complaints.

I got to play some.  This game will appeal to Metal Gear Solid fans, but it's not that fun or anything.

Sure.....

Can we keep the OMG PC HAS BETTER FRAMERATE bs out of this forum? This has been established in 1992; and like, we fucking get it. Why is Borys always shitting up threads with his bullshit?

hilarious lol spoiler that i just saw on a live stream of the game:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
after the giant robot battle, ocelot pretends that he's having a heart attack like liquid did, down to the "FOX... ...DIE!" thing from MGS1

then he laughs and runs around like a crazy old man and snake takes a hilarious pratfall from rex's mouth and he goes chasing after giggling old ocelot, who runs off just in time to jump onto a giant mountain sized submarine, Outer Heaven, (think Arsenal Gear, but bigger and bluer)...

...WITH MOUNTAIN RUSHMORE ON TOP OF IT, WITH BIG BOSS' HEAD INSTEAD OF WASHINGTON'S

I AM NOT JOKING, THE ENTIRE LIVE STREAM BURST OUT INTO LAUGHTER AT KOJIMA'S ATTEMPT AT "EPIC"

Then Raiden comes out, and with one arm stops the giant ship from moving.
[close]

:rofl

I swear that you have to be fucking distinguished mentally-challenged to enjoy this shit. That's more random than a Family Guy episode

Raiden is so fuck awesome. The first cutscene he appears in so well done, and the fighting is so incredible to watch.

The production values in this game are out of this world.

Got my PS3 MGS4 pack yesterday night, yeah I waited on line... there weren't too many people there, only 3 other people were picking up the console/game combo. One dude had a Ryo Hazuki shirt on, another guy had a Fox Hound tattoo... I also saw a lot of people with Metallica and Slayer shirts, what's with videogame nerds and 80's metal? I asked some of the other people what games I should get with my PS3 and they were all like "all the other games suck"  :lol

So yeah, now I'm at work and it's pissing me off b/c I wanna be home so bad and playing... this day is gonna go by SOOOO SLOOOOOW!!!

Can we equip the mask early on, and keep it on during cut scenes? Have you tried it? (The ninja mask)

And can we equip a young Snake mask or do we have to look at Grandpa all the time?
